Giant 4 Dollar Homemade Fajitas Meal | But Cheaper

- Ah yes, the TexMex classic, fajitas. We all know it. We all love it. However, going out with friends and family trying to enjoy a steamy plate of meat, beans, vegetables, and warm tortillas that you just want to cuddle up in are so darn expensive!! Enough is enough of spending over 15 bucks a serving for fajitas. That's why we are making chicken fajitas at home, but wayyyy cheaper. Like $4 per serving cheaper.

Josh’s new segment should be “But Faster” where he takes long cooking items and makes a quicker weeknight friendly version.

This 👆🏻

This has been said so many times he better fricken do it soon lol
I don't have a oven D:
As a broke college student who LOVES food, this series has legitimately saved my life.
I love food too, i think i would’ve die without it
I wanna thank food for keeping me alive during my toughest times
Food has saved my life multiple times, it literally is the only reason why I’m alive right now

This is quite brutal, but useful :-)
Josh should do a "Basics" series in which he explains knife skills, pan skills, how to break down some meats and vegetables etc
Kinda like binging with babish?
Like binging with babish?
He does on tik tok!

Check out Basics With Babish.
How did you know I’ve been craving fajitas?! Money-saving tip: Red bell peppers always cost more than the other colors, so buy a bunch when they’re on sale and chop and freeze for quick fajitas!
Fun fact, the reason why they cost more us because it's the last color a bell pepper turns so it takes longer to achieve 👍
Thanks 🙏🏽
In Austin, the yellow and orange peppers are more expensive
Or buy a bunch of green bells and let a few sit on the counter to turn red
@@producehappiness9952 pretty sure they wouldn't turn red. Much more likely to rot/grow mold as they are already "dead" given that they were cut from their source of nutrition too soon. So, if you buy green. They won't turn red unless you're some kinda witch...
I made this. It was absolutely the best Tex-mex dish I’ve ever made. Ever.
A moment if silence for Josh's poor neighbors who have to smell this while eating hot pockets from the microwave 😔
That's me. I'm his neighbor.
Everyone who is Fasting: 👁👄👁
Hey there ain’t nothing wrong with the pockets of the hotness just consume in moderation 😂
Josh could easily do a But Better Hot Pockets video 😊
Also as someone who literally just finished a bowl of kicked up "blue box" macaroni (talkin pasta water added to the sauce along with bacon grease, bacon chopped up and mixed in, even got the bacon on a righteous Kwik Star discount, you can always add a bit of egg slurry too and turn it into a cheesy carbonara), there are ingredients and more importantly techniques (not strictly featured in the product instructions) that can improve even a generic food product.
you should do another segment called “but college” and only use a stove/oven/microwave with minimal dishes and pans and fast prep/cook times
Would be cool to see. Like cool flex and all but many of us don't even have the space for a rice cooker, let alone alot of the fancy stuff he uses im these videos.
It's a bit like DIY. Sure it's cheaper to build your own, but only after you subtract the cost of the tools needed.
You can cook rice pretty good without a rice cooker. You just need a pot middle to low heat, stir some times and let it cook till the rice is good. 1:2 rice to water doesn't change. Rinsing it doesn't change. And if you don't wanna rinse you can roast your rice with a bit oil for some flavour. Rice cooker is unnecessary imo
@@akuma1319 Catch it just before the water in the bottom of the pot runs out but isn't completely dry and it will be perfect.
@@akuma1319 Yeah but for recipes like this one, where it isn't just "cook rice in water" but instead "cool rice with a whole load of other stuff", actual instructions beyond "bung it into your expensive rice cooker" are kinda necessary if you lack said expensive rice cooker.
@@Stargazeer Rice cookers are like $20 for a good one, but you can often get them cheaper. Was one of the first things I bought in college and honestly my best purchase. Still use it 4 years later one a weekly basis.
The last time I made fajitas I kept calling them “bruhitas”. My nieces were annoyed but I was entertained. That’s my fajita story.
Calling them fajitas after that is a massive downgrade
love it
Thank you for this story
I like it

I love how with the more videos Josh makes, the more his humor comes out If u watch his old videos he’s not like this lol
i think his older videos is just him being careful of the jokes and things he says cuz he isnt sure how his potential audience would take it
I made everything here for my family on Cinco de Mayo and we ate bomb fajitas! I used the spice mix on a sous vide flank steak and it was fuego! Thank you so much for all you do!
I just made this tonight and OH MY GAWDDD. This is soooooooooo good and all I spent was $10 at Dillons. Guys please make this, it is so worth it. I have so much food left over. Joshua, you have saved my pockets and my stomach lol

I think the hardest part of following his recipes is having to adjust for the equipment I have at home. In an apartment there simply isn't room for most of the big and expensive cooking equipment he uses in his videos. It's not feasible for most people sometimes when he uses so many fancy gadgets, love the recipes though!
Do you have a grill?? That's all you need. Everything else can be done with pots.
@@xsageonex I make my fajita pork on the stove too!! easy 30 min meal, including prep

That's what happens when when you live in his cupboard
Don’t buy canned beans: dry open stock beans are cheaper and usually more packaging-conscious and all you gotta do is soak them the night before cooking
And if you’re grilling already, grill the peppers and onions
I was surprised he used canned. Usually, he'd be all about as scratch as possible.
As an Indian, when Josh said bass-matty rice that really struck me in my soul jkjjkjjkk

I made the fajitas and rice last night. They were the best fajitas I’ve ever eaten!!! Thank you!
I did this yesterday...it took the whole day....I’m tired but it’s amazing! The beans were the best part and basically a meal in themselves.
You know Josh, you should start a series with low effort dishes called but lazier

Much like your queso recipe, I could not imagine cooking a fajita meal this way. Canned beans? Fried rice in a rice cooker without caldo de Tomate? And where is the cilantro?
💯
FINALLY, SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS, like... fajita veggies shouldn't even be that good, but they're sooooooooo amazing on everything haha
Josh, I made this recipe to the T tonight for 10 people (I doubled the recipe) it was an absolute hit! People were going back for thirds and fourths! I myself have never had fajitas before and this was absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Earliest I've ever been to be honest😏....his cooking techniques are way easier to follow than the other posh chefs who think going fast and using everything is the key
Hey Joshua, would you do a video where you go to the supermarket and show and explain the ingredients you are buying to help people better understand the prep work before cooking.
Love the videos
I love how you made this amazing tex-mex meal without a spec of cilantro.
Thank you for a tex-mex recipe I can actually enjoy
Without using the devil's lettuce
I discovered this channel only recently, thanks for the outstanding content! This particular video shows simple recipes which, taken together, arguably take a long time to prepare, but that can be batch-cooked and refrigerated/frozen for days worth of supplies. Besides, with beans + bell peppers or chicken + rice + bell peppers, you already get delicious and balanced meals. So, you don't actually need all those components unless you're hosting a party (which in many places is still illegal...).
Every time I follow one of your recipes it turns out amazing! I made your fajitas, and the seasoning was awesome. My wife can't take too much of the heat from chipotle powder so I cut it in half and substituted regular ol' chili powder for the other half. I'm sure it's not as good as if I had followed yours to the letter, but one has to keep one's spouse happy. Judt wanted you to know you're really appreciated out here.

Facts.
Here (smaller city in Hungary) fajitas cost about 9$ converted, and that's beef. And it's a huge serving, with Mexican rice, tortillas and several dips.
Also, as a slightly ocd aspiring chef, the one thing that annoys me when people make Mexican food is NOT putting the beans on the bottom of the tortilla. I always put them on bottom. It’s the base of the dish. Josh, you are my favorite human lol.
This is the first time ive caught a video this early lol
same
My man is spending $0.60 on Chipotle powder. Look at this fancy dude with all his RUclips money
2:44 omg what was thatttt😂😂😂
For Vegetarians: in the beans, you can use vegetable stock and soyrizo instead of chicken stock and chorizo
As for the chicken portion, you can use Tofu, but it will be a bit different in texture, so I highly recommend frying first
Mexican here, I SMILED when you fried the rice before making it, 10/10
Josh: place your thighs onto the hot side of the grill.
Me: "got 3rd degree burn"
I'm fasting but you're making me hungry. I'll resist the urge to eat though.
Me too! Ive notice that i watch a lot more food videos in ramadan lol, a lot of Josh and also Natasha's Kitchen
I feel personally attacked by the “stay calm, we’re not cooking rice in here” 😭
Watch this without sound. So much visual chaos. Love it.
I only made the fajitas themselves, and it was great! But, and this is a very important but, I would highly recommend using a cast iron skillet for the peppers and onions, which I did, and my family loved it!

Day 100 of waiting for Josh to take on somebody his own size (Hard Rock Cafe) in his But Better series after years of picking on fast food places. You'll need maximum effort to beat their BBQ ribs, flawless chicken, and hot fudge brownie.
And yes I know this video is but cheaper. Nah you'll need to But Better the Hard Rock.
Your production team is insanely good!

“But cheaper.” Uses binchotan to grill. 😂
Also, CANNED BEANS JOSHUA?! Who even are you? I thought I knew you. 😜
That was more of a time thing considering dried beans aren't that expensive.
I didn’t even read the title I just saw “20 minutes ago” and clicked immediately 😂
Ik I’m late but day 3 of telling Josh to recreate Wendy’s 4 for 4 from scratch.
Oh man I have been trying to recreate fajitas at home for so so long. This finally did it. This sounds weird, but I rinsed the excess marinade off after grilling bc I have a 1.5 yr old who is also eating and I didn't want it too spicy and it ended up with perfect heat even lil dude enjoyed it and my spice averse mother in law LOVED it!
Slicing the peppers skin up is the biggest flex here
remember kids, costco keeps the cost low.
So tell us how YOU store a 15 Ib. Brisket?

What is this, a Bushes’ commercial
Hi Josh! Is there anyway you could start listing your total ingredient cost, your serving size, or how many servings your dish makes in the description? It would help in trying to budget meals overall. ;)
You should do a segment where you magically make everything cheaper, faster, but with that same amount of flavor - like all the people who never cooked once in their life seem to think is possible.
He makin BEEEEEEEEEANS
He buggin bro
He didn't cook the beans from scratch 😕 Shame Papa no start from the dry bean.
This series is cool in theory, but even opting for subpar ingredients, there’s no way you’re getting out for less than $30-40 minimum if you have to buy these ingredients. Also, Josh, if you wouldn’t mind telling me where you are getting your basmati rice? $0.48 for 2 cups of basmati rice 👀
i just think he should have swapped basmati for white rice. the rest is ok
The guy who is editing his videos did amazing job !!

I have never in my life seen Spanish rice made like that.
It’s not Spanish rice, it’s Mexican style rice. Either way, we don’t use rice cookers to cook our rice. We literally use pots.
@@teresacontreras928 well TERESA, it’s also known as Spanish rice in the US. Soy mexicano 🙂
Soy Mexicana. When you say SPANISH RICE you are referring to Spaniard cuisine.
@@teresacontreras928 you missed the part where there’s no difference but the name here in the US. Spanish rice is also known as Mexican rice.
Dude I live in the US too, literally no one other than you refers to our rice as Spanish rice. Look it up, ask your parents do whatever but our rice is not Spanish. When you’re calling Mexican Rice, Spanish Rice you are insinuating it’s from Spain. Hence SPANISH. Why do you think Josh called it Mexican rice & not SPANISH RICE.
Low key hate when someone says this costs $4.00 to make! No it costs $60 for all those ingredients. Don’t tell me the price per serving, I ain’t paying for it by serving
Maybe where you live, but it definitely didn't cost him $60 for all of that.
@@Default78334 it definitely didn’t cost him $4 either, I was making a point...
According to some papa fans, you can possibily get 4.4 per serving in texas. but that's probabily the only state that you can do it. some people mentions that it costs around 8 bucks just for the chipolet spice
Looks pretty delicious. The Mexican rice is pretty different from the rice I grew up with. Our family has always just made it with oil, sauteed garlic, onion, tomatoes or tomato sauce, chicken stock, and long grain rice. We never really put other spices like cumin or chipotle powder in it or used basmati, or cooked it in a rice cooker.
yeah a lot of mexicans have mixed feelings about the recipes from the rice to the tortila
someone tell papa how to pronounce "BASMATI" properly xd
Pour a splash of reposado tequila in the pan while you “sauté” the vegetables. Then flambée it. Great flavor to come.
