Its definitely risky taking any weapons. Maybe a can of mace would be ok. But if you have a knife or gun and get caught, the police instantly consider you an armed criminal rather than just some person exploring a building.
Well, if you're in an abandoned building of any significant size, once you know they're on to you, it wouldn't be that hard to evade and ditch said weapon - what are they going to do; search everywhere for a trespass charge? Personally, I'm always armed and have the desire to preserve history so - to avoid being an armed burglar, I don't do these type of explorations.
I'd recommend a multi-tool over a knife. If you get busted by the authorities a knife might give off the wrong vibe. Also, wear normal clothing. Not a bunch of black tactical gear.
I agree, I would like to add more with what you said about the gear. Instead of a multi-tool, a regular swiss army knife from what I heard is adaptable than a multi-tool. The clothing depending on what climate you wanted to dress up for, the sports clothing should work if I heard it correctly. Saturation of the clothing and a backpack consisting of navy, maroon, khaki, brown, seeder red, indigo blue, grey (in variations), cream white, and forest green works better both in urban and rural terrain. Plus instead of backpacks to invest in a hydration pack.
in my bag i keep a metal straw and a hammer. You wont believe how many times i was able to smash locks with that. All you have to do is stick the straw inside the lock and then push it further with the hammer.Or just smash it with the hammer in the first place . best bet
Always bring a hat or even a hard hat anything can drop from the roof

Drone is a must
I like to bring a way to mark my way out.
One non vandalizing way is to mark hallways with arrows made of bright orange duct tape.

Very dark blue works as good as black, but doesn't draw as much attention outside of buildings.

If I had that knife, gloves, credit card and tape in my backpack and I was busted by the cops, I would immediately be in trouble.
That’s why I bring a hammer 🔨 so I can break the handle
