Just to clarify, in the new Disney Canon all Y-Wings are BTL-A4 Y-Wings. The legends continuity depicts numerous variants of Y-Wing and has the Clone Wars and GCW versions as two different models. I'll eventually do a video covering all the legends subvarients, but as far as Disney Canon goes, they are all the same model just modified.
Presumable the maintenance issues the Y-wing have are still cannon, seeing as the design of the classical bombers remain the same. Notice that only the pilot cabin has proper plating, the rest is just open, the reason is that the Y-wing is high maintenance, except the lasers, who are very dependable, as such, the mechanics don't bother putting the plating back, except on the nose, were they don't have to remove it very often.
+billtang79 In the origional X-Wing I prefered the Y Wing to the X-Wing for dogfighting, I tended to end up close behind TIEs where the X-Wings lasers would miss wide (because the X-Wing was so much wider than TIEs) but the Y-Wing never had that issue
But Lords of Kobol are they Frack Ugly. They always looked unfinished to me, like something cobbled together in a junkyard and after the reveal that they'd removed the exterior panelling, this in a way is actually the case.
Dude you just pissed off a Y-Wing! One should never piss off a Y-Wing you know the kinda of hell you can get if you.......(hears sound of approaching Y-wing making its run on Weldonwin) um i'm going to fly off in this direction Good luck!
"The Y-Wing is the workhorse of the rebel fleet. It's not quick or flashy but it gets the job done. The armor on this ship is extensive and the shields will protect you from just about anything, which is good because you won't be going anywhere fast. The Y-Wing is used mainly as a bomber because it can carry a heavy payload of missiles torpedoes and bombs. The other important weapon is the topside ion cannon which rather than destroying a target can disable it for later capture. The cannons have a computer assisted auto fire feature, so don't forget that when your in the heat of battle."
By Rogue Squadron 2 I was an expert at lobbing bombs laterally. At one point I was even able to hit TIE Bombers with some precision. I've probably lost those skills by now.
Maintenance Chief - "You know, if we take all the armor off, it will decrease time required to maintenance these things!" Pilot - "Yeah, but won't we die?" Maintenance Chief - "Yep, and we won't have to try and fix what you brought back!" Admiral Holdo - "Brilliant!"
Even Empire era TIE Fighters had impressively powerful laser cannons for their size. And since the Y Wing is as big a target as a TIEs solar panels from certain angles they dont have much of a chance once they are in the crosshair even with shields. So they rely on Fighter escorts keeping enemy strike craft buisy so the Y Wing can use its quite decent speed to get into range and unload on the enemy. The armor is useleas.
Originally the Y-Wings in the original Star Wars film were supposed to have the bubble canopy for the ion turret. But the limits of blue screen effects at the time meant that they had to remove the canopy from the models.
It's not quick or flashy, but it'll get the job done. The shields will protect you from just about anything... which is good, because you won't be going anywhere fast.
back when i was a child my friends always were fans of the X-wing, not me tho. i always had a weak sport for a good old bombing run. being a bomber guy is not a fashion-type its a way of life.
Me too ... when both ESB and RoTJ came out, everone else was a X-wing fanboy, but I was, and still aim, more of a Y-wing guy myself ... if you know about WWII aircraft, she always reminded me of the Mosquito... agile, and a punch way above her weight...
Hands-down my favorite starfighter in the entirety of the franchise. I adore the way it looks, with all the nuts and bolts and tubes and struts exposed.
Amazing video, very understimated ship, but crucial for the victory of both the republic and the rebelion, curious to see what will take the place of the Y-wing in the Resistance!
This bomber was my favorite ship from the star wars universe ever since I was a kid.Especially the clone wars era one,I still have a paper airplane of one from when I was in 5th grade
Love you Spacedock. The voice of an angel and content that's well written and to the point. You may not have millions of subs, but you have the best like/dislike ratio I've ever seen.
Now that I think about it the Y-wing's main flaw of low speed/maneuverability was probably not as big of a deal when it had a turret. That armor plating was not very useful against Imperial TIEs but it likely was effective against the weaker weapons employed by the CIS Navy fighter craft. This bird did the job it was built for and then some.
Can I just have your voice narrating everything to me? It's such a good voice that every time I read something about news reporters now I have your voice in my head
I would love to see you guys do some mandalorian ships, particularly now you've covered some old republic era stuff. Things like the Kandosii dreadnaught, aggressor battleship, kedalbe class and so forth. Also, the basilisk wardroid?
thank you for making these videos. I use them to help build my fleet for the X-wing table top game. (My fleet is more like a role play thing than a tactical min/max game) Cheers mate
George Lucas was a WWII buff and the Y-Wing was the Rebel version of the P-47 Thunderbolt with the X-Wings being the P-51 Mustang (and the TIE Fighters were Japanese A6M Zeros). The stripped down aesthetic of the Y-Wings was supposed to give a sense that they were old starfighters that were constantly being upgraded and modified, much like someone who would modify their old car to boost performance to make it a hot rod. That was a bit of influence from his previous movie American Graffiti. George himself had some mechanical aptitude and liked to work on cars himself (which is where these traits for Han Solo came from).
She may be ugly. She may be slow. Yet she never stops and always blows. The Y-Wing a girl dear and true. One that will always please. No, matter where she goes.
my buddy in college played the SW RPG with a modified Y-Wing. The dorsal turret was operated by the R2 droid and there were 4 Ls-1 Tie fighter laser cannons in the nose.
Finally the video I was waiting from you, excellent video and you just got yourself another sub. Thanks for promoting the good old Y-Wing, I love the smell of smoking Imperial defenses in the morning :)
While Y-wings couldnt turn with X-wing or TIE fighters they did seem to have a excellent roll rate. At the Battle of Endor Y-Wings seemed to do a pretty good job.
Spacedock have you ever done videos on the Tie Phantom, Raptor, Defender or Droid fighters? I have heard that those starfighters were some of the best in the Imperial Navy.
Still like the idea of a dedicated bombing crew member who would operate the ion turret, just from within the cockpit instead of in a more exposed turret... It makes more sense than having two people in a snowspeeder, since there would be a lot more for a bombardier to do in a Y-Wing
I'm really curious what sources were used to compile information about the Y-Wing for this video. Some of it contradicts the new technical source books.
putting the armor back on upgrading the engines and shields and even armor would make this an effective bomber far into the future maybe even the yuzhon Vong war.
Would like to see the Y-Wing in the sequel trilogy. For the longest the Y-Wing seem overshadowed by the X-Wing but it's finally the recognition it deserves.
Ever since I can remember having seen the first Star Wars movie that has always been my favorite fighter whether the real world or anything science fiction I write that as my favorite followed by The veritech Fighter from Robotech first gen and the beta fighter from 3rd then I'd have to go with the X-Wing
when I first saw Star Wars when I was really little the Y wing was my favourite ship of the lot. Hard to describe why, it's just really cool. Unfortunately I fell to the dark side and Star Destroyers are my favourites from the franchise now :p
Does anyone know why those "things" sticking out of the engine are there? You know the circles that just kind of hang out behind the ship, supported by four very thin pieces of metal? They don't seem to be able to vector thrust in any way, being so far from the engines. I've never seen any explanation for them. I know it was probably done just for the looks, but at least at the start of the franchise almost everything had a purpose or explanation, even if it didn't make much sense. I can't find one for them and it's driving me insane.
The pig, as it was nicknamed in the X-wing books, because it wasn't the prettiest thing, but boy did it get the job done. I say to take on a single ISD deploy a fighter wing of Y-wings along with a few A-wing squadrons for cover.
In earth history the Y Wing would have a similar role as the British WWII Mosquito to the X Wing's Spitfire. Or more up to date the F-4 Phantom II to the F-15. Love this old war horse, bird?
My Favorite fighter will always be the X-Wing. However if there was a fighter bomber i would considered beloved. its the Y-wing. It pretty much is the classic looking sci-fi fighter. be amazing to see life sized mockup ones in person. sucks that disney didn't create any for the theme park Galaxy's Edge. Yet.. :P
Just to clarify, in the new Disney Canon all Y-Wings are BTL-A4 Y-Wings. The legends continuity depicts numerous variants of Y-Wing and has the Clone Wars and GCW versions as two different models. Spacedock what the music you use for your intro I really like it
Spacedock I remember taking on missions in the Y-Wing in the original X-Wing simulation game by LucasArts
Presumable the maintenance issues the Y-wing have are still cannon, seeing as the design of the classical bombers remain the same.

Spacedock U-WING
Y-Wings are basically the rebel alliance incarnate. Scrappy, easy to underestimate, totally effective when a plan comes together.
Truer words were never spoken. :)
But Lords of Kobol are they Frack Ugly. They always looked unfinished to me, like something cobbled together in a junkyard and after the reveal that they'd removed the exterior panelling, this in a way is actually the case.
all we need is Hannibal Smith and a few cigars and It will be a weapon of mass destruction
"Who's scrappy-looking?"
Dude you just pissed off a Y-Wing! One should never piss off a Y-Wing you know the kinda of hell you can get if you.......(hears sound of approaching Y-wing making its run on Weldonwin) um i'm going to fly off in this direction Good luck!

Gotta love Rogue Squadron.
EvillBob Classic series
Triggering flashbacks of the very best sort
I understood that reference
By Rogue Squadron 2 I was an expert at lobbing bombs laterally. At one point I was even able to hit TIE Bombers with some precision. I've probably lost those skills by now.
Gold Squadron for life!
However short that may be...
Maintenance Chief - "You know, if we take all the armor off, it will decrease time required to maintenance these things!"
Pilot - "Yeah, but won't we die?"
Maintenance Chief - "Yep, and we won't have to try and fix what you brought back!"

So they put it on the Clone Wars model Y-Wings
It's not quick or flashy, but it'll get the job done.
The shields will protect you from just about anything... which is good, because you won't be going anywhere fast.
CapColdblood Rogue Squadron :)
well.... anything but Vader, that is
OMG My favourite starfighter and sci-fi ship in general of *ALL TIME* !!
:D
I am always impressed with this ship's reliability in cannon and legends, those who pilot them are indeed heroic characters.
Y-wing has always been my favorite. crew of 2, ion turret, concussion missile launcher. so cool
Such a beautiful design, along with the T-65 and the CR-90 corvette. We didn't get to see enough of them.
back when i was a child my friends always were fans of the X-wing, not me tho. i always had a weak sport for a good old bombing run. being a bomber guy is not a fashion-type its a way of life.
Same got made fun of relentlessly for a week because of my favoritism of the Y-wing. Fighters win battles. Bombers win wars.
i enjoyed the Y-wings more because no one did in my cirles, it was OP in lego star wars.
Me too ... when both ESB and RoTJ came out, everone else was a X-wing fanboy, but I was, and still aim, more of a Y-wing guy myself ... if you know about WWII aircraft, she always reminded me of the Mosquito... agile, and a punch way above her weight...
the y-wing is not made from plywood tho :>
Mark Abrams True ... :'D
Love the Y-Wing :)
I've been waiting for this video to be a thing... and it just so happens to be uploaded on my birthday ;)
I knew I'd find you here
@@RojoFern yeah same
Anyone remember the old days of Battlefront II when we could out-maneuver a TIE Interceptor in the old Y-wing? Good times...
i yused to do that in the original BF2 all the time. drove my brother nuts.
X-wing vs tie was always my favorite cup of tea
Hands-down my favorite starfighter in the entirety of the franchise. I adore the way it looks, with all the nuts and bolts and tubes and struts exposed.

Man can't wait for planet side.
you have to do Earth first
Ah, the Y-Wing. Flies like a bowling ball...
...and strikes like one too!
One of my favorite star fighters from Star Wars.
I love the Y-wing in all of its configurations. Thanks for the breakdown.
Who else is having flashbacks of bombing the imperial spaceport on kile II? Hit em where it hurts!
God I loved that mission.
Love you Spacedock. The voice of an angel and content that's well written and to the point. You may not have millions of subs, but you have the best like/dislike ratio I've ever seen.

Could you do the Lucrehulk class battleships of the CIS
I love this channel. There are others like it, but this is my favorite.
LOVE that ringing endorsement from Captain Rex.
Not to mention: the Y-Wing was the first fighter to carry out the Marg Sable Maneuver
As big Sci-fi fan i really adore all your videos! keep doing great job! cheers from Dubrovnik!
You somehow make the Y wing sound cool.
Im impressed
lol, rebels survived as long as they did because of Y-Wings, what are you implying?
So, we need a video on the Anubis from The Expanse. It is easily one of the most intimidating spaceship designs I have seen.
I would love to see you guys do some mandalorian ships, particularly now you've covered some old republic era stuff. Things like the Kandosii dreadnaught, aggressor battleship, kedalbe class and so forth. Also, the basilisk wardroid?
The Y-Wing is the best starfighter in Star Wars in my opinion. I love those ships.
Yay! 💕💕💕💕💕😍
Thank you Spacedock!
Asking for this for months and it's beautiful!
Finally somebody gets the evolution of the Y correct! Good Work!
Y-wing, I love you.
I love the Clone Wars era Y-Wing design with full armor.
I originally wanted an X-wing when i was a kid, but my Dad got me the y-wing. I fell in love with it and never Looked back.
thank you for making these videos. I use them to help build my fleet for the X-wing table top game. (My fleet is more like a role play thing than a tactical min/max game) Cheers mate

There's something about the Y Wing that makes me like it better than any other craft in Star Wars.
While Y-wings couldnt turn with X-wing or TIE fighters they did seem to have a excellent roll rate. At the Battle of Endor Y-Wings seemed to do a pretty good job.
Ooh, always nice to see some more canon SW vids! ::)
The classic Y-Wing bombers is just as iconic as the X-Wing within the Rebel Alliance.
Spacedock have you ever done videos on the Tie Phantom, Raptor, Defender or Droid fighters? I have heard that those starfighters were some of the best in the Imperial Navy.
*BEST SHIP MODEL EVER!!!!* (Its the second best, the first belongs to the X-wings{ yes both Rebel X-wings and Resistance X-wing})
A lot of Xwing love, when are they goi going to remake that game? Maybe even as a moba?
*1:* Yup. She's my baby!
Have you or can you do an in-depth B-Wing breakdown???
I love this channel.
Y-Wing is quite well armoured actually.
I love your videos, keep them going!
Can you make a video about the Enterprise NX-01
Could you take a look at Destiny from Stargate Universe?
Glenn Wallström YESS, I WANT TO SEE THAT!
Angry Cat e
agreed
Hands down my favorite ship in Star Wars
can we see anymore old republic ships? like the hammerhead cruisers, or early republic fighters?
can u talk about the rebels hammerhead corvette or the ships they use in the Battle of Scarif?
The republic version is the BTL-B series
I always loved the Y-wings.
I personally would like you to do an in-depth look at the Atlantian ship Destiny. I think that could be really interesting.
Still like the idea of a dedicated bombing crew member who would operate the ion turret, just from within the cockpit instead of in a more exposed turret... It makes more sense than having two people in a snowspeeder, since there would be a lot more for a bombardier to do in a Y-Wing

this the best channel
I'd love to see you do any of the Valkyrie fighters from the Macross Universe.
Any chance of doing a detailed Spacedock on the Firespray class starship?
Terran Behemoth class battlecruiser (ex. Hyperion, or the Gorgon-class Bucephalus) from StarCraft would be cool to see on Spacedock.
putting the armor back on upgrading the engines and shields and even armor would make this an effective bomber far into the future maybe even the yuzhon Vong war.
When your planet raid happens the exact day the Shield gate is under maintenance 😂
Would like to see the Y-Wing in the sequel trilogy. For the longest the Y-Wing seem overshadowed by the X-Wing but it's finally the recognition it deserves.
Any chance of doing the Dropships and Warships of the BattleTech series?
What is the song in the very beginning of the video? (0:00 to 0:09)
Remember in the new movies when they specifically went on bombing runs and forgot that Y-wings exist? Pepridge Farm remembers.
the first year, the malevolence was basically the bismark of the star wars galaxy and the bombers were the swordfish of the brits
Ever since I can remember having seen the first Star Wars movie that has always been my favorite fighter whether the real world or anything science fiction I write that as my favorite followed by The veritech Fighter from Robotech first gen and the beta fighter from 3rd then I'd have to go with the X-Wing

Great vid as always. Can you please do Gozanti-class cruiser for Star Wars. Thanks You for all the fantastic content.
Do the Rogue Shadow from the Force Unleashed 1 & 2.
Does anyone know why those "things" sticking out of the engine are there? You know the circles that just kind of hang out behind the ship, supported by four very thin pieces of metal? Could you do a video about the Kilimanjaro class dreadnought?
please do a review on the peacekeeper command carrier
Can you do a video about the TIE Advanced x1?
The pig, as it was nicknamed in the X-wing books, because it wasn't the prettiest thing, but boy did it get the job done. I say to take on a single ISD deploy a fighter wing of Y-wings along with a few A-wing squadrons for cover.
Ahh Y-Wings, how you plagued my time with X-Wing and Tie Fighter alike by constantly ramming into my craft.
In earth history the Y Wing would have a similar role as the British WWII Mosquito to the X Wing's Spitfire. Or more up to date the F-4 Phantom II to the F-15. Love this old war horse, bird?
Y-Wings: the Hawker Hurricane of the Star Wars world
Can you do the AP-PT Transport?
that was an awesome vid. When are you going to do Slave 1
Can you do the N1 Naboo Starfighter next?
Do the Concordia from Wing Commander, but not the one from the movie pls ^^
could you do a vid on the super dimension fortress sdf1 from robotech or andromeda from gene roddenburys andromeda
Why would you need laser hard points? They have no recoil or moving parts
Basically the F-4 Phantom of the Star Wars universe.
Yet.. :P
the power of the y-wing
