    This video is about how masks (whether surgical, or N95, or cloth) are counterintuitive and actually work much better epidemiologically than one might expect. Masks do double-duty, and the fraction of interactions with masks is much higher than the fraction of people wearing masks, so partially adopted, partially effective masks are able to reduce the basic reproduction number surprisingly well.

    I'm in the US, and I consistently see people "wearing" masks. They wear them below their nose or around their chin. Sometimes they wear the mask UNTIL they start talking, and take it off to talk (which is likely the most important time to have a mask on outside of sneezing).
    It's honestly hard to hold out hope for humanity when guidelines this simple are so difficult for people to understand and follow.

      It's probably harder to understand that all these rules fucked up your country more than the virus ever would have, in my opinion.
      Diseases are part of life, and so is death.
      I'm not saying everyone should die from this and stop caring about it, but reinforcing laws about personal behaviour is useless, you just inform and educate the public (something the US had a really hard time doing in the past decades, but I'm from Italy so who am I to judge) and then public supposedly will encorporate those guidelines into their daily life.
      But this was done in such an aggressive way that people just got scared and now they do whatever they want or can just to feel like they still have control.
      I get it, it was an emergency eccetera, but it's been what 7 months? If the US had to go to war I assure you it would have been done in a much more efficient way and much faster. But when it comes to the safety of the citizens it fuckes up. Such as other countries

      If it were possible. If every living person could isolate themselves for about ten days (I don't know what the maximum incubation and infectious period is) - we might be able to wipe Covid19 out. It doesn't sound like much of a sacrifice, does it, compared to the sacrifice we're making now. It's just not possible, though. Some of us have medical needs that mean we can't isolate ourselves for even short periods.

      @@batintheattic7293 the only problem here is that there will be always someone not respecting it, that is the only reason why it would never work, unfortunately. And you would need more days because it is 14 days + the days the person is sick. So I guess you would need about up to a month to be sure. Not so realisable anymore, is it? And for the medical need, that wouldn't be a problem because someone could just send them to you days before the quarantine. But it is a nice thought indeed, just some will always stay ignorant and stupid...

    This video has an important omission: the virus is here to stay. It will not disappear. So all we are doing with masks and reduced transmission is slowing the RATE of transmission, not the eventual EXTENT of transmission. Until we reach about 70-80% herd immunity the virus will continue to spread. There is a good reason to slow the rate of transmission, and that is to prevent hospital overload. But we are far far below any risk of hospital overload in all but a few counties.
    Meanwhile the collateral damage of economic shutdown will cause immense harm for generations, with trillions in debt payments that will only come from young taxpayers and government confiscation of the wealth of retirees. Merely slowing the spread rate is not a sufficient excuse for the immense economic harm.

    here is my problem, everyone seems to think that the biomed engineers, such as myself, who make these masks are stupid and know nothing. Im going to go over a few simple things:
    0. Yall must have never played the division by tom clancy. Check it out or read up on it.
    1. Lets start with a very advanced topic in very simple terms... Brownian motion. This principle describes how particles of various sizes interact with the molecules around them. For example, large particles, such as dust, or anything above the 0.3 micron range, fall to the ground quickly due to their mass.
    Now, smaller particles below 0.3 microns will float around and bounce off of the gaseous molecules in the atmosphere, sort of like a bouncy ball or a pinball machine. They are very random and chaotic; this is actually very very helpful. If you were to take a bouncy ball the size of a orange, and bounce it into a soccer net, the chances of it passing through the net are very slim, especially, if you had other objects in the way of the net (larger particles in the air).
    now, for particles 0.3 microns, in size, they do not fall or float all random and like, they actually move in a linear pattern. This is like through the orange through the net. To counteract this, us engineers induced a static charge on the mask material to attract the 0.3-micron sized particles to the mask. imagine of the soccer net was magnetized and the orange were a metal ball.
    The above is why its actually easier to capture viruses themselves than larger particles. viruses are 0.1 microns in size, which is very small. They bounce off of everything making them easy to capture.
    2. Viruses are simple and need space to do their thing. Viruses need a host cell of a minimum of 0.4 microns to even allow replication of itself. It needs to be able to hijack and take over the cells organs and energy systems to use for replication. If the host cell is to small, or not strong enough, the virus cannot replicate.
    3. We do not breath out a naked virus, thats not how they work, nor is that how your lungs work either. Any time you breath or talk, anything that goes through your respiratory system, is encapsulated into water droplets. These droplets are very large, about 0.4 to 0.5 microns in size. So anyone who says that virus particles we breath out are to small to be captured, have not thought through the process of how the respiratory system works.
    4. Cloth is not magical. All cloth and plastic cloth (what masks are made of) work in both directions. why people think they dont is strange to me.
    5. For those who say " if i can smell a fart through a mask, it means it aint workin" needs to go back to basic chemistry. methane particles that you smell are 0.06 microns, about 60 times smaller than a virus and yes, some will make it past the mask because they are so small, same reason you can breathe in a mask.. O2 particles are very very small
    6. if your worried about cleaning your mask, never use water, that will kill the static charge. Just bake the mask at 170F for 20 minutes with no steam. just a regular oven

    Another Caveat: This assumes people that wear masks are wearing them all the time. This is only true for community transmission of a virus. Not if someone travels to visit a friend and takes off their mask once they arrive. Or when mask wearers all meet up to go for dinner and all take off their masks for the duration of their gathering because they are eating/drinking. Really these circumstances of being in the company of people for extended periods of time are much more likely to cause a transmission than fleeting moments passing strangers on the street and in supermarkets.

    • @happyspaceinvader508
      @happyspaceinvader508 4 года назад +14

      Mask-wearing is reducing the community transmission, not eliminating it. Think of all the people sharing the bus/train with you... you’re preventing accidentally spreading it to them. If you then want to spread the virus to the random friends you’re visiting, nobody can stop you doing that.
      “But I don’t have the virus, I don’t even feel unwell”. Two words: incubation period. You won’t know you’re passing it on to other people until AFTER you’ve already done so. You may not even get symptoms yourself; any overweight friends or those with asthma may not be so lucky.

A 100% effective mask that blocks all viral particles to your nose and mouth, is only 50% effective at blocking the spread to you. Oh and the biggest caveat to all of this, is not that masks doesn't work, they only work for a select amount of time. Do you know why surgical masks are made the way they are made, and why there are 4 different types of them? Not only due to difference in quality, but well mostly, but the sheer amount of time you could wear one, without particles on the inside of the mask spreading to the outside of the mask. I suspect this is a joke, but still: One of the caveats at the end talks about how 50% effective doesn't tell us how the mask decreases transmission. This is significant for your idea, because two masks worn over another by the same person are not at all the same as two persons wearing masks. Masks are not just filters. So no, your strategy isn't effective.

      Entcraft44 that's true, masks aren't filter, but they slow down the speed of air exiting the mouth, thereby limiting the distance the virus is able to travel. Having to travel through an extra layer of cloth DOES further decrease speed, so two masks would actually be more effective. This is why they recommend thick, multilayer cloth masks over thin surgical masks.

    I don't know why everything has to turn into a political purity test. This should be a bipartisan issue that we can all work together on and help each other out. It's a shame our leadership has not set the example and helped make this whole thing go better.
    I don't want to turn this into a political argument, again, it's insane to me that it even IS a political argument, we should be able to speak the facts, and institute policy that protects public health, without even disclosing our political affiliation. But since it has become a political argument I have valid criticisms of both sides and how they have handled this. First, the president hasn't been an effective leader in this crisis. And if he had been then I think it wouldn't even be all that political. He would always have his critics of coarse, but I think it wouldn't be nearly as polarizing as it has been if he had just advised people to wear masks, wash hands, and social distance from the beginning, and listened to his experts in his own administration to handle it properly. That said, and I'm trying to be delicate here, and give as much of the benefit of the doubt (I could be much harsher in my criticisms, but I don't want to feed into that). On the other hand, I've seen incredibly hyperbolic criticisms of the president from the other side, saying he's personally responsible for EVERY death. I think that is pretty unfair to make those accusations. Covid-19 would have come to the US anyway. It would have infected people. And people would have still died. And that's even if the president had done everything right from the outset. EVERY nation on Earth has had to deal with this virus. EVERY country on the planet has been impacted in one way or another. Placing blame solely on the president is very irresponsible, and acting in a purely partisan way during and election year.
    I don't have a side in this conflict. I'm not pro any politician. I'm not saying who to vote for. And I've tried to refrain from saying who I intend to vote for, or not vote for. I think both sides have not handled things well, though perhaps in different ways. I think both sides have things they have said, or done, that has not helped us at all. And that includes blaming the other side, as well as whatever actions have been taken, or not taken. Maybe you disagree with that statement, but if we are being honest with ourselves, then we know this deep down.
    So let's first, set politics aside, and beat Covid together. We have the power to eliminate the virus and return to some kind of normalcy. Perhaps not completely, the world has changed in some ways that we can't go back on. And perhaps this thing will make us more mindful of other infectious diseases, such as the seasonal flu, which also claims many lives every year. But perhaps we can make Covid a thing of the past.
    Second, let's admit that no side is completely right. If anyone is trying to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) we should not listen to them. If they are speaking sane and logical facts, and they are encouraging us to work together beyond political boundaries, then we should listen to that.
    And above all of that, even if you can't get behind the idealism, even if you have disagreed with the majority of what I've said; if a business or a city or an organization has asked people to wear masks, we should wear them. We shouldn't be trying to find ways to get out of it. We shouldn't try to push back on it. We shouldn't assume they are part of some political agenda. We should just comply and wear masks to help protect the other people, the workers, and public officials we are interacting with. We should try to keep ourselves healthy, and protect our own families. Even if you don't think you will get sick, or you think you won't show any symptoms, how would you feel if you unwittingly passed it on to a loved one? A friend? A co-worker? Someone at the grocery store? What if that person had to go to the hospital? What if they had to be intubated (it's not pleasant, and can cause lasting damage)? What if they ended up dying from it? Let's not turn each other into enemies. Let's not spite each other. Let's instead think of those who could be impacted and hurt by our carelessness. Or even we ourselves could be impacted by it.
    And let's not assign blame to others. Either getting mad that people are wearing masks, or that people aren't wearing masks. These people are not our enemies. They are our neighbors. Our community. Our friends. Our family. They are our fellow countrymen and women. We are all in this together. Let's be kind to each other. Let's be respectful of each other. And let's help each other out.😷💧👏

      The first and biggest problem in the US handling of the pandemic was the complete ineptitude of the CDC and other government agencies. And I'm talking about the career employees here, not just the political appointees. These agencies are supposed to be an example for the world in their professionalism and depth of knowledge and instead they've been a global laughing stock.
      For months they downplayed the risk from this obviously dangerous pandemic, and then actively lied to the American people by going out and saying to NOT wear masks, despite decades of research that masks are effective in protecting against respiratory infection. As the video alludes, Asian countries have known this for a long time and it's why mask wearing is so accepted in some of the countries there.
      Of course, the President has greatly exacerbated the damage done since by making mask wearing a political statement.

    It gets even more complex when you consider the exponential nature of a spreading disease.
    If the infection rate is 2, every person infected infects 2 others, then after 10 cycles, that's 1000 people infected.
    If everyone wore a crappy 25% effective one-way mask that would drop the infection rate down to 1.5. In 10 cycles that would be 58 people.
    A "crappy" mask that only prevents 25% means a 17 times lower total infections.

Or if you’re scientifically illiterate, go look at some analyses of the data and conclusions written up by professionals with science communication degrees in journals like NewScientist. There are resources out there, and I assure you, a wealth of accumulated scientific knowledge. Yes this is a modeling argument, this guy is undeniably and obviously a mathematician first. He making the assumption that you’re not completely inept and informatively handy-capped, so that he can give you a modeling argument which just adds more to the overall argument for the effectiveness of masks. He specifically says that this is the modelling argument. You want to ask for evidence based arguements? Go search up how covid is transmitted, and go to the CDC website showing effectiveness of different types of masks, go to a journal, go to google and search up reputable SCIENTIFIC source, not a blog.
      TLDR: google is a thing, search for reputable sources, this guy never said he was giving an evidence-based argument for the effectiveness of masks in terms of individual particle transmission rates, he only gave you a modelling argument for you to consider and add. Also let's not forget that we're speaking of exponential growth, not linear growth. If everybody wore a 50% effective mask this would mean every individual would effectively have a quarter of their expected infections per individual factored into the exponential growth formula for covid. Let's take an example formula for exponential growth where we take 100*e^3 which equals about 2008. Now we apply the 75% reduction to the exponent and find that 100*e^0.75 equals only 212 which is only about 10% of the original value before we applied our 75% reduction. Now obviously this isn't the exact formula for covid's expected spread, but this very clearly showcases the sheer power of attacking the exponent in an exponential growth curve, making masks and social distancing all the more effective the more people keep doing it. Added to this if we manage to get our exponent

      If masks kept you free of covid they kept you free of everything else - as you say, of the common cold even - and your body, your nation, missed out on a seasonal dose of adjustment and 'toughening' up.
      You are effectively in quarantine with bodily defensive abilities slowly dropping and dropping while outside newer and newer offensive particles are being created all the time.... and inevitably they will get in... like smallpox to the Indians.
      there are more bacteria in a human body than there are human cells and god knows how many more virus particles. it is the nature of our reality. they'e crawling all over you now, and all within you. you're immersed in a bath of them. you are a bath of them, it's bacteria that eat most of your food for you. it's your microbiome that even decides your moods and your attitudes. microbes is everything. that's microbes, not virus. The limited spread of Covid-19 in many Asian countries seems to provide some pretty solid evidence that the changes in behavior from wearing masks does not outdo the benefits. I also don't really believe that this would be a big problem since the kind of person who wears masks in the first place is also probably a lot more likely to follow social distancing guidelines whereas the kind of person who doesn't would absolutely not follow those guidelines either.

      @@hedgehog3180 according to you. But in reality mask use encourages the one thing we should be discouraging above all else. Increased contact. Wearing a surgical mask at Walmart cannot protect you from the virus if someone who was shedding virus just walked through the store ahead of you. Even if they are wearing a surgical mask as well, they are expelling far more viral load that what a cotton or surgical mask can even theoretically capture (in reality they capture almost none due to evaporative effects).
      Nothing spreads SARs COV 2 more efficiently that large groups of people. It does not matter if those people are all wearing masks.

    I wonder if similar masks have diminishing returns. For example: Person A has a 50% effectiveness mask and Person B has the same type of mask. A's mask works as intended, but, by the time the infectious particles reach B's mask, most of the particles that would be blocked by the mask have already been removed, making B's mask less effective against the remaining infectious particles.
    I'm not saying this is definitely how it is, but it does seem like a reasonable enough situation to be worthy of consideration.

    • @TheGuyegood
      @TheGuyegood 4 года назад

      Not likely. This scenario only happens when you assume that infectious particles are heterogeneous, meaning the particles that made the escape from Mask A have some special characateristics than the ones being trapped thus you can conclude the same characteristics may also help those particles to get their way through mask B. However, if you assume all particles are identical which I think this is correct scenario you should consider otherwise the particles are mutated, a simple probability analysis should apply here.

    This is a great video on the basics of masks. However there are a few things to take into account. 1. Proper mask use. Wash your hands before handling a mask and after handling a mask. Only touch your face or mask when you put it on or take it off. Touch your mask by the parts furthest from your mouth and nose, so by the strings or edges. As soon as your mask is on treat it as potentially contaminated. Dispose of disposable masks right away. Put your cloth masks in the washing machine as soon as you get home. 2. The majority of transmissions (atleast in the Netherlands) Take place in familial or friendly gatherings in which people tend to be lacks with the rules and not wear a mask. Be careful with these still. Don't shake hands, don't share food, don't sit closer than 6 ft to eachother. Do not attended if you have been in contact with someone showing symptoms of CoViD 19 for 14 days prior to the event and check eachother on this. Do not have gatherings that are larger than single digit if the room allows you to keep a 6ft distance. And most of all, Keep yourself in check, report your own health if you think something is wrong. Don't hesitate to call a doctor. Stay safe and healthy people.

      Just in case people are wondering, The thing about the masks is that in the performed studies there was at best a marginal reduction in transmission if masks were properly used. The reason why I elaborated on proper mask use and just how much effort it costs is because improper mask use seems to increase the chance of infection marginally as well compared to not wearing a mask. There is however a significant reduction of transmission if infected people wear facemasks even if they are unaware of the infection. Meaning that these measures are blanket measures aimed at catching non-symptomatic transmission or through people who are unaware of the infection. It is an excersise in risk assessment and the government is chosing to take as little risk as they can by obligating mask use. Here in the Netherlands this is currently restricted to urban centers like amsterdam and public transport. In either cases the recommended distance of 1.5 meters for asymptomatic transmission is not always something that can be applied, so that is why. The 1.5 meters or 6 yards btw are to prevent transmission through just talking or breathing. Not for sneezing or coughing. The same as in any given epidemic/pandemic the best way to reduce the R0 is to reduce contact between vectors. As this is unrealistic in a functioning society, countries try a lot of different or variable methods to mitigate transmission. Whether they make the right choice in this is often hindsight. What you can do for yourself and what absolutely does work is being mindful of the health of those you interact with and your own and as sad as it sounds, limit contact with those who do have other heart/lung conditions. For you it may not be more than a flu, but be mindful of transmitting it to other people who are vulnerable.

The long game will be worth noting, as well as counting in the total those who died out of neglect due to lockdown.

      To get infected, virus must enter the body by means of the mouth, nose, ass, cuts, and other parts of the body not fully secured. Main entry for a virus is mouth and nose.
      A mask that covers your nose and mouth redirects the main path of which the virus fly in which in turns reduces the chance of the uninfected breathing in.
      Taken from this basic knowledge we used, we can figure out that those who wear a mask reduce the chance of catching or spreading the virus thus have an idea of how a virus works. So I'm not quite sure how those who don't wear a mask think that is the way to stop a virus from spreading. 🤦‍♂️

    Sir, as we know the total energy in the first orbital of H like atom is -13.6eV. and to excite it to first excited state of energy -3.4eV we need to provide 10.2eV energy.
    My question is what if we provide some energy intermediate between the first energy gap and second energy gap say 10.5eV (I agree that 10.2eV will we used to excite it to the second orbital) but what will happen to the remaining 0.3eV?
    A teacher told me that it will be used to heat up the atom, but how an atom can heat up since the atomic scale of thermal energy is kinetic energy?

    MP, could you do a video on the effectiveness of coughing/sneezing into your elbow? Here and in other vids, the effectiveness of masks is measured against people coughing/sneezing directly at other people, but this is unrealistic as most people cover their mouth (using their arm as an impromptu mask). There must be data on this, right?

    Here where I live the number of new cases doubled in the last few weeks. We went from 3-4% daily positive cases recorded to 7-9%. And thats with masks in public areas, shops... Not that people stopped wearing mask because you cant even enter a store without one... I would say its because schools have opened but the numbers dont add up. The lowest number of reported cases is in the ages under 14. Its getting worse and worse with getting colder and colder outside. A lot of people are now without symptoms or with little to non and the virus has an easier way to spread.

      Mind you, one factor is that the evidence seems to show that the less of the virus you are exposed to, the less bad you'll get the disease, so you should expect mask-wearing will result in more milder cases and fewer severe cases.

      @@kazedcat No it should not. N95s are still in limited supply (and healthcare institutions are still having to pay highly inflated prices) and almost no one in the public wears them in a way that is much more effective than a simple surgical mask. You have to be individually fit tested and trained for N95s to wear them effectively. If you don't work in construction/mitigation or healthcare you probably haven't had that experience. That is why N95s should be preserved for those who need them most. Even in healthcare we are having as many patients as possible tested to reduce need for N95s and having to come up with re-use methods. Misinformation like yours is putting our providers at risk.

    • @imveryangryitsnotbutter
      @imveryangryitsnotbutter 4 года назад

      Masks do work in both directions, of course. But the percent effectiveness is different based on whether it's blocking outgoing or incoming disease transmission. It's probably more accurate to say that a cloth mask successfully blocks outgoing 75% and incoming 25%; Your mask can block most of the droplets when you sneeze or cough, but a sneeze droplet from someone else can get into your body via your eyes or ears.

    • @ZennExile
      @ZennExile 4 года назад

      @@imveryangryitsnotbutter not it's not accurate to say any of that. Even an N95 worn correctly on clean shaven skin does catch even a majority of the viral load you expel because the mask is limited to a specific volume of air per second. So if you cough or sneeze it pushes the mask off your face and expels your bodily fluids in a cloud around the mask instead. And surgical masks, and cotton masks, have never been proven to reduce ANY amount of viral load in a legitimate study. They only catch a specific range of particles and droplets. A range far larger than any viral particle or aersoloized droplet nuclei. The theoretical maximum amount of viral load reduction from these masks is 15% -30% under absolutely ideal circumstances. And even that requires you make a waterfall of assumptions. And this only applies in a single direction. The theoretical maximum amount of viral load these kinds of masks can filter from INCOMING air is more like 3%, and that depends, once again on a mountain of assumed variables and controlled conditions.
      Out in the wild, the masks that 99.99% of people are being forced to use, provide absolutely ZERO protection from viral transmission in the scenarios in which they are mandated to be used. Like supermarkets. The only way to reduce transmission rates is to reduce contact. Mask Mandates allow companies like Walmart and Disney to increase contact under the umbrella of plausible deniability.
      Er go, masks are 100% useless.
