One of my favorite victories of all time. I had just moved to Georgia from Alabama and all I heard all week from everybody at school was how there was going to be a black out and Alabama was going to be destroyed. Needless to say, that next Monday was one of the best days ever and it was the proudest I had ever been as an Alabama fan up to that point given that I grew up in the era of Mike Shula and all the chaos that preceeded him. Roll Tide!

Sometimes I think that this team gets overlooked. I know that they didn't win the SEC or the National Championship, but this is where we saw Nick Saban's process begin to take shape. The 2008 team had a lot of heart and worked hard. They improved 5 games from a 7-6 season the year prior. They were ranked #1 for a good portion of the year. The losses to Florida and Utah seemed to overshadow everything that this team did for the future of Alabama football. I hate to hear people say Alabama has won four National Championships in the past 8 years. I know that it sounds better than four of the past nine, but this team is the team that started it all. And this game is the game that propelled Alabama toward the top. Roll Tide!
Hell yea, Jones began shining Ingram was coming up this game here is where I became more than just a Bama fan I fell in love with the team that went beyond playing with heart every team since has had a passion and like you said it started with this team.
Absolutely. Gator alum here. I remember watching this as a senior in high school thinking "holy cow, that team has a mentality that just bears down on people." Also - and I realize there are no moral victories - I will credit UGA with an entertaining second half. Absolutely everything went wrong for them for the first 2 quarters of play and they legitimately didn't quit until the clock hit zero. That said, they had more raw talent on their roster and were simply out-coached and out-willed when in mattered by Saban.
I love Mark Richt. But he and Georgia were never the same again after this game. They had a really good team in 2012 that lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship, but other than that, it was downhill after this game. Before this game, Georgia had two SEC Championship wins in three tries, and had two teams - 2004 and 2007 - that should have been there had it not been upset by Tennessee both seasons. But after this season, Georgia made the SEC Championship just twice and lost both of them.
It was like something out of Shakespeare and the foreshadowing of Mark Ingram with the first touchdown of the game. I remember being stunned at how easy Bama waltzed down Georgia.
Honestly I think this is point when the dynasty went into high gear, and we never looked back. This is when people began play the mystique of Bama instead of the team
@Tim Allen another great UGA move huh? Uga coach so eager to feel like he got one over on Saban idiot hired a strength coach into a coaching slot. LMAO, let us know how that pans out. With all of the players we have been having injured at Alabama it was obvious it was time for Cochran to go because it's the strength and conditioning coach that supposed to put players into the shape it takes so that they're not injured so easily. And that Alabama the last couple of years we have had players going down like the Vietnam Battlefield so obviously Cochran was overworking the players so good riddance.. Alabama as usual landed on our feet and then some with 1000% improvement from the old typical strength and conditioning coach routine. Always the team that leads everyone to the future the University of Alabama has hired two men that have taken that old position into the future. The rest of the nation with their old time strength coachs who may come up with something like adding jumping Jack's to a superset haha are like the flintstones when you now compare their strength coach to the team Alabama has hired. David Ballou hired as Director of Sports Performance and Dr. Matt Rhea as Director of Performance Science. With these two guys Alabama has now created their own Sports Science Center. So the flintstones like UGA now face the Elite Alabama Dynasty which is Star Wars vs the flintstones. . Probably will see something like this at Georgia by the year 2035 I would guess........ you see you become a dynasty like Alabama by leading into the future and not just following and trying to hire away coaches who have actually lost their luster at Alabama.. you know Cochran had asked Saban to put him in a coaching position and Saban had to tell him can't do that you're not a coach you are at best a strength and conditioning coach. Unknown to coach Cochran he was really on the bubble to be let go anyway because of so many players falling to injuries in Alabama which lands right on his head as the coach that failed in that area. Good luck at Georgia coach Cochran and hope they paid you a lot of money because always did enjoy you and you were a funny guy but unfortunately at Alabama the future sort of pushed you out...
I'm 26 as of this year 2022. What does this game mean to me? As a kid I've only heard the stories of Bear and what Alabama was. I watched this team go through some dark times and I had given up hope. I prayed for them to start winning, this game was God showing us Bama fans that Nick Saban is our answered prayer. Roll Tide!
If Richt would've spent less energy on trying to intimidate, such as with the whole blackout thing, and then in 2015 when the Dawgs lined up and stood in front of the Bama sideline before kickoff, then things may have turned out different for him and his teams. I've never understood the intimidation tactic. If you're a big time college or pro football player, I would think that you've already conquered your fear of any opponent.
2008 was also the year that Urban Meyer got revenge against Richt for clearing the bench to celebrate the opening touchdown the year before. Florida killed Georgia in 2008 and at the end in garbage time, UF had the ball and one play would have run out the clock. But Meyer burned all his timeouts to keep UGA on the field longer. Funny stuff
