  • Here's a really great beginner metal lathe project that is incredibly handy to have around. It gives you a ton of fine control when punching to scribe lines. I'll be giving this one away to one of my patrons over on Patreon. The drawing will be at 5pm Central Time on February 1, 2022. Sign up at the Patreon link below.

    My Dad (RIP 1977) was machinist. Never seen a tool (slide hammer) like this.

    Stuart. The quality of this video is great, you are really improving. Your narration and b roll where on point. Your jokes are funny and well placed. Very informative yet entertaining. Keep up the good work.

    Really like the oil hardening tip :)

    I like the visibility of the tip on a scribed line. Most of my center punches are forged and I'm usually wearing an optivisor, and seeing the tip is not always so easy. I don't have the hardness files, that might be a nice thing to have. I'm often tempering in a toaster oven that goes to 425 or 450 deg F, I've wondered about picking up a second one and trying to play around with it -- shorten the heating element -- o achieve a bit higher temps. Shorter element = less electrical resistance = more current = higher temp, and measure the temp with an oven thermometer. Always lots to think about and play around with, thanks for posting!

    Thanks Stuart. I have actually never seen or heard of these before. Looks like a great idea. I've never purchased an automatic punch. They look dangerous to me as I can see it skating across the metal. Thanks so much. I think this will be a nice project and a useful addition to the toolbox. I've always enjoyed your channel and refer back to it often for information. And the dry humor is funny too! Thanks

      Thanks K W. The automatic ones aren't too bad, but they can definitely slide a bit as you're pressing down on them. They're actually a pretty cool project too. Maybe looking at a future video too.

    One of my favorite projects was making slide hammer vise grips. Very easy. Get allthread that matches the vise grips, use the lathe to drill a hole through bar stock, knurl, part, twist two nuts again each other at the end so the hammer doesnt fall out and you're done.

      That's on my list! I was thinking I'd keep the slide hammer theme going and do it for next week's video. I made some for a coworker right before Christmas too, so it’s been on my mind.

    you should use steel as your test piece, if it works that good in steel it will work on anything, although being Tool steel im sure it works just fine on anything softer than the tip, excellent tool, will be making one myself!

    Why not adding a simple spring for better impact?

      Give it a shot and see if it works. You can send me a picture or video of it over on Instagram @stuartdeharo when youget it made.

    Cool project. I notice that you broke out the 5C collet chuck for this project. I get that a 3 jaw is really for convenience where precision may not be super paramount, and that 4 jaw gives you more control over centering the work piece, but what advantages does the 5C collet chuck provide? Im assuming that it works best for small stock, but are there any other inherit benefits, or situations where it is shines over other chucking options?

      @StuartdeHaro  2 года назад +2

      Collets hold concentricity very well. I had actually switched it out for another project which was going to be the video/giveaway, but I had to order some springs and they didn't get here in time. That'll be the next one I guess.

    I'm in the market for a 5C collet chuck for my lathe which has a D1-4 mount. What would you suggest?

    • @StuartdeHaro
      @StuartdeHaro  2 года назад +1

      I got mine off ebay ages ago. Several sellers offer one like mine although I never see them offered as adjust-tru chucks anymore. Mostly you see them as plain back chucks, so you can put a D1-4 backplate no problem.
