Jeff, while we wait for more videos, let me say this. More and more people want to start or expand gardening. You, my friend, we’re chosen to show us basic and easy steps to do that. Kudos to you.
Thanks Jeff I’ve been an avid gardener for forty years now, veggies not necessarily flower’s. The one thing that’s stopping me is my battle with health problems and depression. The garden stop’s when the black dog strikes. But I never stop thinking about it and watching gardening programs like yours and our own Mark from Queensland. So I thank you for keeping my dream going, one day I’ll get through an entire year of growing veggies. 👍🏻❤️
Hey Kev, we seem to be in the same boat, health problems, depression and anxiety. But I do want I can when I can, when the temperature get to hot for me to be outside I’m stuck in the house until it cools off. Just keep doing what you can do when you can just be safe.
I love this video, it will give newbies hope, confidence, and hopefully a good harvest. I've been gardening for 60 years, I garden by the moon's cycles, and I enjoy a huge harvest every year, but that wisdom comes from years of trial and error. Please keep giving people hope ~ this year and these times especially, we surely need it! Happy Growing Jeff!
Thanks so much for this. That was the intent....to not make it so daunting and to realize that gardening is awesome, but its also very inclusive.....for EVERYONE. 🙂
My recommendation for first-timers are parsley, snow peas and whatever your part of the world calls spring onions/shallots. A scattering of parsley or spring onions can be added to most meals and beside the added flavour they give a pleasing visual pop to add to the satisfaction of "I grew that". Fresh snow peas are so delicious that you will be lucky if any are around long enough to make it into the kitchen, but if you do cook them do so for no more than 90 seconds in already boiling water. Buy parsley seedlings (plant in soil at least 30cm deep), but use seeds for the spring onions and peas as they don't like to be transplanted. Don't fertilise pea plants - amend the soil 2-3 weeks before planting the seeds. Enjoy.
I think one if the reasons why some gardens fail is because new gardeners try to do too much at furst. I believe it's best to start small and learn. Being that I live in a desert, amending the soil was the first step.
I sense an underlying to thread in all of this, which is: keep it simple. Even after over 30 years of gardening, that is my preeminent concept. It’s what I tell people most often…. Avoid all the engineering, the great expense, the exotic plants, and just let nature do the work. Secondly, Iusually advise to make the soil your focus, more than the plants themselves. Put it first, and the rest comes along. And that hair… Looks like it’s growing too! Good video theme. Thank you David
You're so right David. Its exactly where the focus should be and when you can do that, gardening becomes much more effortless and synergistic with the soil!
I started gardening because my girlfriend bought basil, parsley and Thyme plants from the grocery store and when I saw the first problems arise, I started Googling how to take care of them. The plants are still standing and that has been a year ago now. But what really got me into gardenimg were green onions. My gf doesn't like regular onions but she does like green onions. And she said that you can just put them in a glass of water and keep regrowing. But then the first problems started to arise and I decided to just put them into our garden since that was the solution for the parsley. And suddenly they started doing even better. And I really got into the flow of regrowing foods from the grocery store and experimenting with it (we already decide to plant garlic there before that btw). There's also the Albert Hein grocery store which has a yearly thing where every X amount of money you spend, you get a free pack of vegetables seeds and care instructions for kids. And that really made me love gardening while in the past I used not like it at all because I always used to be under the impression that it's difficult and takes up a whole lot of time, but I ended up wanting to spend more time than I have it.
Great advice. I'm just getting started this year and figured I would start with herbs to put in the window. Incredibly nervous about it because I have failed in the past.
Right on Donna! Kale and lettuce from transplants...peas, spinach, and herbs from direct seed. Don't over water, mulch bare soil whenever you can, and realize that sun and soil and the plants do most of the work!
Howdy, This is my second year or gardening because my wife did the first one. She planted some green onions, & they are still growing into their 3rd year. True, she started them in planters, & when she gave up on them I moved them by a tree I water... they lived, & because of that, I put them where the could do better. Now, lots of green onion :-) & looking to plant more like, I Hope You are looking at a good one. . . God Bless Us ALL. Rusha?!? is NOT the USSR. The USSR was Great, now, like Hawaii, calm & compliant. Till now, then a bit of a road bump to The World, & soon forgotten. Soon, The world will not even remember "Rusha" ...
Erin...soil is THE solution to almost every success..and problem. pH, aeration, moisture retention, etc etc....it all begins with the soil. Its why container gardening is good to start with because you control the soil 100%... 🙂
Erin, I solved that problem by buying cheap garden soil and add Plant tone fertilizer, my neighbor thinks I have a green thumb, I can't convince her that I get my help from RUclips gardeners, my biggest headache was vines bores, have to figure out how to deal with it

First timer here. I have garlic sprouting so I put the section in water and it's really growing...I'm planting it today, but wondering if it's wrong because it didn't go through the winter planted. Can it grow and produce by summers end.. ?? Is this another way to do it if you missed planting in the fall?? Thank you and Blessings PS broccoli leaves are getting little holes like some small bug is eating them.. what do?

Great advice 👍. It's so rewarding to grow a plant. Most people can grow grass no problem. So don't say you don't have a green thumb, just try it.
