Just got my first Concertina, had to get one so I can learn how to play this. It would be amazing if you in the future could release notes or tutorials on these.
"AngloKazooie" created Sheet Music of this arrangement complete with Anglo Concertina Tablature! Check it out here: musescore.com/user/37659330/scores/7162161
You should ask McNeela if they want to use your videos on their site. I liked the sound of your concertina so much I decided to order one of my own from them!
I'm thinking about buying one of these to play alongside my flute in the future. Is there any yearly maintenance that needs to be done on it or repair overhauls after a certain amount of time owning it. I read on the website where you bought yours many repairs can be done by yourself at home, but I was wondering if you can get repairs done by a certified concertina tech when and if it need to be repaired.
There's not exactly any "yearly maintenance" to worry about, however if something were to happen, trying to pay a repairman could be quite costly since they're quite rare. Thankfully, working with a Concertina is not too terribly hard, and a lot of small fixes can be done just by searching for "Concertina Repair" videos. I'm a big fan of "Easy Concertina Repair - Fix That Note" with Simon Thoumire, since he does a wonderful job showing what all the parts do and explains everything in an easy way. Because it is a wood instrument, it needs to be taken care of properly to prevent problems. Things like keeping it stored in temperature control (cold can cause condensation on reeds leading to rust, heat can cause glue to get soft or warping with time), keeping it stored in a case to help the bellow compression & prevent dust from getting in the components, etc. Pretty much anything you'd find in a "taking care of an accordion" video mostly applies to a Concertina since they use similar components.
So... I've been hesitant since my music theory isn't very good (I struggle to write sheet music) and I've never had a proper Concertina teacher so I worry I might pass along bad techniques or incorrect info... However, since I know there really isn't as many good Concertina resources out there as other instruments, it could be nice trying to help people and inspire others to play. I'd probably start with a much easier one like Grogg Mayles, see how well it actually helps people. I'll give it some serious thought! If I do it'd probably take a month or so.
I commented on your groggy mayles video I think in the past and both of these videos inspired me to get a concertina of my own. I got a 30 button anglo rochelle concertina and I've been learning to play and I've been trying to listen to this video and watch your fingers to figure out what notes you're playing and I was wondering if you ever wrote down the notes for this arrangement because trying to figure it out from this video is kind of hard lol.
Nice! Also I completely understand, especially since you can't really see my right hand buttons at all... So I have plans in the works to try and make some "How to Play" videos with sheet music since a lot of people have asked (similar to the "Daddy Long Les" style). I've been trying to learn and improve with MuseScore, and am hoping to start with "Grogg Mayles" since it's the most requested (and much simpler). Depending on how it goes, I'd love to write up music for this song too! Can't really give any dates on when it might come out since I've never really done anything like it before, but I'll try my best with it!
Hi ! Great job, it's awesome. I listen your video 5-6 times per day I would like to buy a concertina, but on internet, there are 20 or 30 buttons, I don't know what choose... what is your stuff ?? The concertina with 30 buttons cost 270€ (I'm french sorry for my bad english), do you think is a good deal ? thanks you 😚
i know i’m a bit late, though i’ve been wanting to get a concertina or a accordion to play stuff like this, and since accordion are very expensive and hard to learn i’d like to get a concertina, though i’ve been seeing 20 and 30 button ones… which is better?
Well... To be honest, I mainly play by ear and am not the best with music theory / writing. I could try looking into it since I really should get better at making sheet music, but it'd probably take a while to deliver
I had a very tough time with the Anglo Concertina at first since each button has 2 different notes, was very frustrating and felt like I couldn't do anything myself. After a month or two practice with lesson books, it started to really click
I see the score is in key of D. I was thinking of getting a Phoenix in G/C, but lately have been thinking a G/D would be better. Most Irish music is in G with next lower in C or D and a few in F. What would you advise?
I'm honestly not sure! I think most are G/C (mine included), not having C as a row could make some traditional songs tough. Could also mean G/D is a bit pricier due to rarity. Probably a personal preference thing!
@@mattkins752 Eyy, best of luck! If you do, I'd recommend "The Anglo Concertina Absolute Beginner" book by Chris Sherburn, really great to help learn the basics!
what s the brand of your concertina, plz? and, is it easy to learn? i use tu play the guitar since a long time, but i would like to try concertina for "troll" ^^ but not a too ugly sound ^^
Unfortunately this is the only concertina I've played, so I'm not the best source. McNeela does sell cheaper concertinas, but I've heard they aren't the most reliable compared to their more expensive ones... There's a store called Smythe's Accordion Center which sells great refurbished concertinas for much cheaper than new, looked like they had a couple 30 button anglos for ~430$
Unfortunately, probably not. This song would have to be heavily modified to work on a 20. Because of all the sharps & the swaps between major and minor, even the melody alone wouldn't be playable in this key signature. I don't personally own a 20 so I'm not certain what all would need to be done to help make it work. Overall, some of the other, simpler Sea of Thieves shanties would be much easier to adapt for a 20.
@@ConcertinaJoel many thanks for the quick response! That‘s a shame. I think I will try to get my hands on a 20 button anyway to begin with and see how I do with it
"might of became" - Maybe that money would be better spent in basic education, but I guess education is not exactly a priority when your mother is your sister.
I see you and Headless hurdy have the same taste in shirts, hands, and fingernails. actually now that I mention it i'm fairly certain you two are teh same person.
Yes! I am absolutely floored, the fullness of your arrangement is astounding, especially with the odd key changes of maiden voyage, bravo!!!
Ikr? I'm trying to do the key change at 0:40 but it's really difficult to get it right even though I have this video.
The one they used to make the music for game was defective
You should try entering the contest for best version of we shall sail together! You could probably win or at least place high!
Hadn't actually heard of the contest till now! It's worth a shot, unfortunately ends on the 18th so it'd be quite a rush getting it done...
Concertina Joel Hope you get something out in time!
The pirate lord would be impressed.
The concertina has been my number one favorite instrument since high school.
it sounds amazing man! youre a really big inspiration to me
Me-wow, I am absolutely flattered by your extreme skill in such instrument!
Yarrrrr! Well played!

Hey, got any tips on buy and or learning the concertina? I love playing Sea of Thieves and would also love to start to play the concertina!
I'd definitely try to look up tutorial channels like "Daddy Long Les" to help get started. Best of luck!
