I've been driving Infiniti's for over a decade. I personally love the brand. I actually had the G37 and owned a Q50's without the turbo's. And never realized the mechanic difference. This was an outstanding informative video. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I learned a lot. I agree with the comments of the interior. Infiniti needs to pick it up or they are going to loose customer's. Which is happening if you looks at overall sales. Again, good job!!
As a G coupe owner who recently did the valve cover replacement and had the engine half apart, and recently tore down the interior when doing a double din and repainted most of the interior, I still love my G. Put about 5k miles a year on it, its garaged.... it is timeless. Was recently tempted to pick up a Q and maybe one day I will but looking at the engine, it makes me think twice.. The G is timeless and still a very, very fun car. Just wish it had push to start and may do a suspension upgrade in the spring. Car has 110k miles on it now. Have had it for nearly 14 years. On a side note, was looking at some of the Lexus a few years ago.. 80k for some of them and you know what, I said this looks worse than my G. It's going to be hard to get me to go buy something new. It really is. Although I do like the iPace and even the Murano.
Great to hear from another owner. I guess most G35/G37 owners get bored or tired of repairs and eventually give in after enjoying the car for the first 10 years or so.
speedkar99 I guess it depends how many miles you put on it a year. I have found them to be pretty reliable though. (Knock on wood). I mean they have their quirks like the drivers side rip tear that needs reupholstering over the years and the valve covers eventually all go on these engines but other than that just a battery. But yeah I can see people wanting the newer tech and nicer gauges and fancier interior if you will but ehhh even when the day comes that the new “daily driver” comes wishing will probably be a Jeep Murano or IPace the G will always have a parking spot in the garage or driveway. Glad to see you have a love of the G and Q series as well. They are and always will be a very nice car. Happy New Year!
Outstanding video with hands on experience and excellent knowledge of the proper terms and components. We are all smarter for having watched this video. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video.
The older ones for sure. I used to have a 78 280Z 2+2 that was wonderful and so easy to work on. The service manual I bought with it was incredible. At 188k miles I sold it to an aircraft mechanic who wanted it, surprise-surprise I wish I had never sold it. My son has a 2005 G35 Coupe 2-WD that is a great car but not looking forward to changing that water pump when the day comes! I believe the older ones are better quality and reasonable to maintain by the owner.
@@Chand_G. wise choice my man . My 2012 G37 has 180k miles and still does 5.1 sec . 0-60 just like it did at 25k. No problems except for a cat conv. Going bad . That's it .
Definitely the G37. I worked for Infinity a few years ago 2014 when the Q50 first arrived. They still had the faithful 3.7 VQ motor with 328-330hp. Idk why they decided to change to a small less powerful engine 😣. Seeing how compact the new Q50 engine bay is I'll buy a 300ZX TT before the new Q50 😉
From the comments, I can only fathom the "hate" for the Q50 (also Q60) with the VR30 engine is because you don't own/lease/drive one. Properly modified (primarily consisting of an Ecutek tune, FI exhaust, and AMS heat exchanger upgrades), my '17 Q60 Red Sport AWD puts down just under 450 WHP & just over 500 WTQ w/93 octane pump gas on a DynoJet AWD dyno. Real-world performance with a 0-60 at just over 4 seconds, again on 93 octane pump gas. I've about burned-down the crappy Dunlop RFTs that came equipped from factory (weight of the OEM wheel & tire? 62 lbs!), so handling will only get better in the future with the installation of a set of lw wheels & tires. As for servicing, I perform my own oil & filter changes - installed AMS intakes, FI exhaust, Mishimoto CC, Stillen RSB, and ST BBK by myself. If you un-bolt and push-aside the ICs, you can access the coil packs and spark plugs. when needed. At almost 25k miles, my VR30 burns no oil between oil changes, w/5k OCIs. With the addition of a Flex-fuel kit, an AMS LPFP & HPFP, and Nostrum FI., the VR30 can relaibly perform on corn fuel (E85), which can get the output closer to 550 WHP/WTQ, 0-60 under 4 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in the low 11s. Not too shabby in my book...
Totally agreed. I have a red sport 400 as well and I love how the video says that the horsepower is only 300. Sure, if you want to compare the BASE 3.0 t Q50 to the g37 but you should at least state the full facts. The top model Q50 has 400hp out of the box. And also, the VR series is not just about more power, it's also a much smoother engine. I've owned a g37 and a 350Z so I'm no stranger to Nissan/Infiniti and I loved them all, but I just hate it when videos don't fully disclose everything. The only thing I hear in this video and comments is the turbos are not going to be reliable so get the g37....yah great analysis. Here's a wake-up call, most cars have turbos today. Deal with it or keep buying old cars that were naturally aspirated. I'm good with whatever you prefer but again, just state all the facts so the video is informative.
I haven't read all comments but I rather the VQ37VHR. So what I get from your video is if you like the Q50 styling but you want to work on the car yourself go with earlier versions of the Q50.
You're right about Nissan exhaust not holding up. My sister has a 2010 Sentra, with only about 45,000 miles. The exhaust already rusted through. Luckily her mechanic was able to weld new metal over the holes, so she didn't have to replace the whole system.
had 2002 xterra that i loved, 5 years ago? my mechanic buddy busted his knuckles changing both exhaust manifolds, and then i busted mine changing a cat... and this is in the sunny southwest where nothing rusts.
@@iroll My sister bought her Sentra new. Her car did spend its first few years here in Ohio, but was mostly in Atlanta, Georgia, where she moved. Meanwhile, no rust issues with my 2009 Toyota Yaris, which I bought new, and has only been in Ohio. Makes me sad how far Nissan has fallen.
So from all the comments and your input the G37 is better engine wise, reliability and long term. What about the Q50 early models with the same 3.7 L engine? It’s the same as the G?
Man thanks for that in-depth review, man that q does looks like a spaghetti nightmare. I do like the simpler N/A larger engines over the turbo small engines. Having own a turbo'd engine car in the past and dealing with daily maintenance such as oil change and other thing associated with dealing with turbos to me wasn't worth the trouble and with my driving dynamics don't see the benefits fuel economy wise. I'm the kind of person that do my own repairs. I like cars that I can get access to components in the engine bay. Worked on older Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas. I've had toyotas in the past and virtually no issues, got a 350z and then a G37. Maintenance level is more on my speed. With prior experience with VQ's I knew the G37 was good for me. This VR30DTT sounds good and may make good numbers in the 400hp version but I can't imagine this thing 5 to 7 years down the road used having to replace stuff. But yah for me G37. unless it's the Q50 with the 3.7 liter.
Seems a bit of a waste to design a whole engine like this to get the same stock HP numbers as the VG30DETT, which was already reliable, powerful and well designed. 400HP variants aside, I don't see how this is 30 years ahead of the VG30DETT, especially when looking at the packaging. What am I missing?
@@speedkar99 I just like the styling of Infiniti. Not really a German car fan. Well, not the ones I can afford anyway lol. I'd consider an AMG model but I can't see spending that on a vehicle when I can get just as much enjoyment out of the Infiniti. Now that the 2020 models updated the infotainment system I'm ready to get it. Was waiting for that to happen. May not be the best of the best but I had one over the weekend for an extended test drive and I loved it.
I have an 09 G37 coupe journey edition. Def one of the most reliable cars I've owned. I only have a hundred nine thousand miles on the odometer and plan on keeping this car until the wheels fall off and the transmission falls out. I'm glad that I bought this model compared to the Q. I can work on 99% of the car myself. If I had the Q that would definitely not be the case after what I saw in this video . In my opinion simpler is always better.
Great review of both cars. Really enjoy your detailed explanations and time to look at almost everything. I agree with you 100% the twin turbo is a mess. I believe the Q50t will be a major money and time sink once it gets some age. I feel for the folks buying a used one thinking it’s a good deal. It’s a shame they engineered such a poor design for maintenance. Guess longevity and durability are no longer a priority. The old G likely sounds and drives better anyway.
Thanks for your feedback! I wouldn't say the Q50 is poorly engineered, it's just poorly implemented. Hopefully the VR engine is reliable enough not to need too much work.
I’m not knocking the engineering chops it took to jam all the plumbing and equipment to manage and feed two turbos in a compact form factor. I emphasize it’s a poor design from the perspective of maintenance and having to work on the car after manufacture. It’s almost as they have the expectation if there’s a problem you just replace the engine as an assembly. Guess time will tell.
Talking about exhaust systems falling apart reminds me of Pontiac Sunfires. A old coworker mentioned to me how he constantly had to fix the strap that held the muffler to the vehicle. After that I started recognising Sunfires from behind by their bouncing exhaust systems.
@@speedkar99 Yeah, a dozen years ago we were still selling a lot of Sunfire windshields, but they're disappearing. My sister still drives a 98, though.
Coming from an enthusiast standpoint, I'm going to have to go Q50. The tuning potential alone is enough to go Q50. To get the same power out of the G it's going to cost ya a ton of $$$$. Just a simple tune on the Q is going to net ya more than +75hp! Cant beat the twins!
speedkar99 my 2013 g37x just was totaled but had 90k miles no rust, only things replaced was battery, spark plugs, fluids, brakes, tires. Only thing that might of been goin out was ac would make a weird noise. And transmission is pretty slow for spirited driving has to be in sport mode
@@speedkar99 Not much rust actually, even though I live in North Eastern US where we have winters and lots of salt on the roads. Even my mechanic was surprised when he checked the undercarriage.
The G35 got special treatment on this channel. I completely took it apart and made a series of videos on how it works. The redsport is the same mechanically as this Q50. It's just tuned to 400HP
Im just saying cos my skyline is the same year and spec with 111 thousand km on it look new ppl actually rebadge them as g37 when i think the skyline badge is better
As usual excellent video. I have two queries: 1) What is electronic waste gate? Is there mechanical waste gate too? 2) What do you mean by saying "fuel damper"? Do you mean fuel valve? Thanks for your excellent videos.
The VR30DDTT engine has Garrett turbos with electronic wastegates (does not use engine vacuum to control the dashpot to actuate the wastegate - i.e., mechanical wastegate).
The 2020 model is only coming out to press now. It'll be a while before I can get my hands on one 😏 but from what I've heard not much has changed mechanically with the V6 engine
Love the video. My 2011 G37 just hit 100,000 miles, and being in south texas there isn't much rust at all. In my experience (F150 EcoBoost) turbos are dramatic failure points. I noticed the Q50 is an S model. Did they stop upgrading the brakes to the larger rotors and 4 piston front, 2 piston rear calipers on those models? Anyway, thanks for the video.
I like the power and potential of the turbo but there’s just way too much going on in that engine bay. I would lean towards the 3.7 engine. Also I’m still not sold on direct injection engines yet due to carbon buildup. How have the turbo engines been holding up?
This is a very good video and I am going to look through to see if you have perhaps made a list of the top 5 or top ten easiest cars to service. Personally I would say to include cars that can be purchased used on car-for-sale internet sites that are not or are not yet collector-cars.
Very informative vid.. i have a Q40 3.7 w/62k on the clock. Need to swap out my airboxes for cones too. Love the startup of the NA engine on cold starts even with stock exhaust. In the future prolly do test pipes & a tune.. 3.7 💪🏾
I own a 2018 Q50. I've had to do some maintenance and it looks very hard to work on but it's actually pretty well designed and not to bad to work on. Once I figured out how to take out those intercoolers I can remove them in less than 20 minutes
I got a G37. I've driven both Q50 with 3.7 and 3.0T. I don't like the Q at all, it feels so cheap inside. It also lacks both steering(EPS) and road feel(soft suspension). The worst among the 3 is the 3.0T. Not only it feels all round numb, it also has the added benefit of turbo lag.
@@seb5945 3.0 T is actually 330 hp stock not 300. Dynos have shown this time and time again. So stock 3.0t is not slower than stock 3.7. Also the redsport is just the 3.0 with +4 psi of boost and an extra water pump so there’s really no difference between them after a cheap jb4 install both 3.0t models are identical. 3.7 is slow but reliable.
Why do people like you compare the g37 to the BASE 3.0T and then say the g37 has more power? That's either lazy reporting or you just don't care to inform your viewers of the facts. The Q50 base 3.0t makes 300hp but the red sport 400 makes 400hp. That's alot more than the g37 which only had the one engine choice. I've owned both cars and love them both. Not here to compare but just want to hear the facts presented. A good review discloses exactly what you're comparing....
Old car:15 minutes to pinpoint a problem,2 hours to fix it. New car: 2 hours to pinpoint a problem,15 minutes to fix it. And with these new cars...nor very sure about this, seems theyre made,to be unrepairable.....

I can tell you without . I have 180k+ on my G37 7 sp auto sedan and flog it pretty hard . Still does 0-60 in 5.1 the same as with 25k . Only thing that ever happened was a cat conv. Had to be changed out . Best car I've ever owned .

The G37 are such underrated cars, they look so good and have the performance to back it up, the newer Q series look great too
Time will test the q50's longevity
Calvin Graham underrated ?? I see so many g37’s and g35s on the road lol
Thanks and I agree, Infiniti has alot of work to do. This Q50 is still the 10-15 year old car underneath besides the engine.
G37s the best one !
You are welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it
The older ones for sure.
Yeah the G35 water pumps suck because they're chain driven.
Great analysis! I have a Q50S with the VQ37 Engine
Awesome. Has it been reliable?
@@speedkar99 Yes no issues at all!
@@Chand_G. wise choice my man . My 2012 G37 has 180k miles and still does 5.1 sec . 0-60 just like it did at 25k. No problems except for a cat conv. Going bad . That's it .
@@soulerflare7 Glad to hear that man! Fast and reliable makes this motor great!
The v6 TT is detuned to 300HP so they could sell a pricier 400HP version
11mins in and already can tell you this man appreciates what he does. ✊

I want to see your comments on Honda's move to turbocharging. I miss the old days of High-revving NA engines!
I'd love to review one of those one day
There absolute junkboxes..
The engine bay should sure looks like pit full of snakes.
Snakes, noodles, spaghetti
That reads like rocket science. lol
How has it held up?
@@speedkar99 No issues with now 24k miles, which includes a 3k mile road trip last year.

Yep same here. Dead even
You're right about Nissan exhaust not holding up. My sister has a 2010 Sentra, with only about 45,000 miles. The exhaust already rusted through. Luckily her mechanic was able to weld new metal over the holes, so she didn't have to replace the whole system.
I had a 2004 G35 and my brother's 2010 G37....all rotting
had 2002 xterra that i loved, 5 years ago? my mechanic buddy busted his knuckles changing both exhaust manifolds, and then i busted mine changing a cat... and this is in the sunny southwest where nothing rusts.
I like the first generation 2014 Q50S 3.7L AWD. It has all the new nice technology with the old-school naturally aspirated engine.
That makes an interesting opinion here...you get the best of both.
Excellent video. Added a new subscriber. Guess I’ll keep my M35x for another 10 years (currently 100K Miles). 👍
I love your videos😍
I have a brother with an Infiniti too
Thanks I'm glad you appreciate my work
So from all the comments and your input the G37 is better engine wise, reliability and long term. What about the Q50 early models with the same 3.7 L engine? It’s the same as the G?
Yes. Same. If you can stand that interior.
Good to hear your perspective
Seems a bit of a waste to design a whole engine like this to get the same stock HP numbers as the VG30DETT, which was already reliable, powerful and well designed. 400HP variants aside, I don't see how this is 30 years ahead of the VG30DETT, especially when looking at the packaging. What am I missing?
They haven't come that far in many years. The G35 cannot be beat
Fuel economy? I dunno, I've owned turbo cars, they are damn expensive to maintain. Honestly the are high maintenance, not for the causual driver.
I have a G37 sedan and was looking at the Q50 red sport. Planning on keeping my G and leasing the Q50. No way in hell I'm digging into that.
Very true, what makes you like the Q50 to lease over a German rival if it isn't any less complicated?
Infiniti is giving great lease deals due to poor sales. I have a 12 g37x and I don’t like the Q50, I sat in one. The G70 3.3t Awd is nice
Too much spaghetti and not enough rice...great video as always

Def one of the most reliable cars I've owned.
I only have a hundred nine thousand miles on the odometer and plan on keeping this car until the wheels fall off and the transmission falls out.
I'm glad that I bought this model compared to the Q.
I can work on 99% of the car myself.
If I had the Q that would definitely not be the case after what I saw in this video .
In my opinion simpler is always better.
Awesome to hear your experience. How has the body held up to rust?
Q50 with the 3.7 sport option is the best I think.
The 2014-5 offered it with the 3.7. Maybe it's a good value ....to me it's still not in the league of where a luxury car should be....
Servicing the Q50 is gonna be a real chore with the extra parts, needs a limited slip differential
To be honest the AWD system had alot of grip when I drove it
This man is very thorough. I bet you’re a hell of a mechanic. Thanks
I'm not a mechanic. I'm an engineer
Does GTR have the same complicated engine like the Q50?
It's not the same engine but they are the same VR family
I'm glad I have a commercial free app , no more O'Reilly ads👍👍

G37/Q40 for the daily driving, Q50 for the weekend driving/backup car. But for even less headache, pick up a G20, preferably the P10 chassis.
Q40 😏
Could you do a video like this for an E90 BMW?
Owning the VR30 looks like it could potentially become a financial nightmare, unlike the VQ37. No?
Bennett Deering I think they must have hired a few Mercedes or BMW engineers to help. It will be a disaster once it’s about six years old.
Agreed
They're following the Germans in the reliability department too
Great review of both cars.
We still recognize the Nissan quality, in the engine everything is rusty, like on my old Nissan.
See the rest and the brakes.
The exhaust is quite the weak spot
Wow the engine of the Q50 really looks like spaghetti XD
It sure does! A mess!
That G37 engine compartment is quite corroded. With the bottom plastic cover in place, where did the water come from?
We live in Canada where they salt the roads, accelerating rust.
@@speedkar99 Wow. Not used to anything in California.
Talking about exhaust systems falling apart reminds me of Pontiac Sunfires. A old coworker mentioned to me how he constantly had to fix the strap that held the muffler to the vehicle. After that I started recognising Sunfires from behind by their bouncing exhaust systems.
Whoa I don't see sunfires or cobalts on the road around here anymore
@@speedkar99 Yeah, a dozen years ago we were still selling a lot of Sunfire windshields, but they're disappearing. My sister still drives a 98, though.
Coming from an enthusiast standpoint, I'm going to have to go Q50. The tuning potential alone is enough to go Q50. To get the same power out of the G it's going to cost ya a ton of $$$$. Just a simple tune on the Q is going to net ya more than +75hp! Cant beat the twins!
Q with the VQ37?
You let your brother use string to secure the air intake pipes????
He does his own work.
I have my 2013 G37x sedan and love it!
How has it held up over 6 years? Any rust?
speedkar99 my 2013 g37x just was totaled but had 90k miles no rust, only things replaced was battery, spark plugs, fluids, brakes, tires.

As usual excellent video. I have two queries:
1) What is electronic waste gate?

I'm not sure what the S means anymore...I thought it would include the drive by wire steering Infiniti had but this seemed pretty basic to me.
I like the power and potential of the turbo but there’s just way too much going on in that engine bay. I would lean towards the 3.7 engine. Also I’m still not sold on direct injection engines yet due to carbon buildup. How have the turbo engines been holding up?
I laughed when you threw the toothbrush at the q50's engine bay😆😆
This is a very good video and I am going to look through to see if you have perhaps made a list of the top 5 or top ten easiest cars to service. Personally I would say to include cars that can be purchased used on car-for-sale internet sites that are not or are not yet collector-cars.

I own a 2018 Q50. I've had to do some maintenance and it looks very hard to work on but it's actually pretty well designed and not to bad to work on. Once I figured out how to take out those intercoolers I can remove them in less than 20 minutes
do you think its possible to swap the engine + powertrain of the q50 hybrid to the g37 with minimal mechanical modifications ?
I got a G37. I've driven both Q50 with 3.7 and 3.0T. I don't like the Q at all, it feels so cheap inside. It also lacks both steering(EPS) and road feel(soft suspension). The worst among the 3 is the 3.0T. Not only it feels all round numb, it also has the added benefit of turbo lag.
Is it at least faster?
@@speedkar99 Red Sport will be definitely faster. The regular 3.0T is 30hp less than what the 3.7 makes.
Your brother's G37 "cold air" intakes are placed right where they suck in hot engine air. Dumb - you lose a lot of HP with those.
