First cruise I ever took was on the Imagination. It was during an 8 year stretch of the happiest time of my life. Right in the middle of it. We partied like rock stars, stayed drunk almost the whole time, and I met this really cute girl on there who was a sweetheart. It is a sad moment to see a part of your memories retired. The big horn at the end was like a final death cry of a wounded and dying animal. One last yell of a mighty ship now going away.
Been on three cruises in my life, all three were on her out of Long Beach. May not have had all of the newest and most high tech features that we see on ships nowadays, but made up for it with great friends and fun atmosphere. Thanks for the memories!
Our last cruise was on the Imagination. It was the first time we had taken our two young sons. So sad to see her go. Many great memories were made aboard the Imagination.
My wife and I won a free cruise in the Penthouse Suite of this ship back in 2001 sailing out of Miami. This was my favorite ship of all of them, even better than the newer more packed ships. RIP Imagination.
@@FireAlarmHowTooGuy please oh lawdy let some crazy Turkish guy buy the Imaginations ship horn and piss off all his neighbors LOL dude like seriously, I met a guy on Facebook who bought a liftboat from Monarch so it's very VERY possible?! Gotta hope!
Surprised to see so many comments about this being people’s first cruise- it was mine as well, out of Long Beach. Thank goodness my friend invited me along to do something I’d never done before. Met great people and had an absolutely wonderful time on that ship. Always Thought I’d get a chance to go again but it looks like it will have to be Panorama or Miracle. This ship will always have a special place.
November 23, 1996 our first Cruise was on the Imagination. The wife and I enjoyed it so much that we now been on 13 cruises and looking forward to #14. One thing we learned from the Imagination is Never, Never again will we ever take our sons on a Cruise....! We broke that rule in 2019 and quickly remembered why we had a no sons on a cruise rule!
My first cruise, 09/16/2006 with my dad who is no longer here! So many memory’s! I loved seeing it when I went on other carnival trips! I know it’s just metal, it’s just sad!
ironically these aren't old ships, mostly from the 90s and are still pretty advanced. also much nicer looking than the newer ones. if it wouldn't be for covid they would see another 10 years of service at least
These vessels are brought into service with such excitement and fan fare. They do decades serving with excess and luxury. They're meticulously maintained and updated. Then just unceremoniously discarded like last weeks leftovers from the fridge. I know that's just the way it works in the cruise and shipping industries. But it's still sad to think their history just gets totally scrapped and lost to time.
This breaks my heart to see as this was the exact ship me and my family went on a cruise back in 2019 and it’s gone forever. :( the fun I had on that vacation and I won’t forget it
Sailed on Imagination twice. Makes me angry to see these ships being scrapped. These ships still had a couple of years of service left. I hate the people responsible for this whole fiasco.
That's from our perspective. A from a business and engineer's standpoint? It's very different. Yes, while the average lifespan of a vessel is around 60 years, to upgrade the engines to the most modern, and to upgrade the rest of the ships systems would be extremely cost prohibitive. 1st, at full capacity, the passenger count is about 2500, it would be a very long time for CCL to recoup, second, you mentioned, you hate the people who made this decision. Well, there are a growing amount of countries who don't want these " dirty" diesel ships in their countries, so CCL had to make this choice, so with the new builds coming out, they are far more cost effective. Lastly, the cruising public prefers balconies. So...there ya have it. Love it or hate it.
Sailed on this for a 5 day out of Miami in 2005 on my honeymoon. It was my 1st cruise. While the decor on it was hideous (common to Carnival) the ship wasn't too bad. Stayed in V-17. Cruises are good vacations.
It is mandatory for all vessels to have this equipment up and running . This ship did not travel a short distance , it probably came through the Mediterranean or Suez Canal to get to Turkey and needs the radar for safe navigation .
My daughter had her first Christmas cruise on carnival, & went back a few years later & did her honeymoon on a Carnival cruise. I don't remember the ship names, but Imagination comes to mind. So sad to see. Hopefully Carnival will make more ships that are just as fun!
I'm surprised really that they scrap them when the hull still looks fine and strong. This ship was only in service for 15 years. I suppose it's for the best as my family experienced the loss of 2 boys who would have become my cousins when I was born in 1970. They were sleeping in their cabin on the Lakonia whilst their parents were entertained at the tramps ball, as was the way at the time. They actually got locked in to 'keep them safe' and they would have been were it not for the fire and the ship sinking. The Lakonia was 34 years old and had several owners all slapping new paint on, especially when she was renamed TSMS Lakonia where she was painted in a brilliant white. They had painted over moving fixings for the lifeboats and their lowering mechanisms meaning some were unable to be freed. That ship had been launched in 1929 named the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and as it had just been given a very sloppy overhaul, it would have remained in service for many more years had it not sunk.
In reality, they were nearing the end of their useful service life. It's sad, but there comes a point where the cost of maintenance grows large because of parts availability, the quantity of parts needed as things age, etc...
Given what these ships cost to build and run, did they even make their money back on them? And why scrap them - structural problems or just not pretty enough anymore?
Older engines cost more to maintain, higher maintainance costs in general, plus the general wear. Ships are like people. They get old. And besides, steel is a precious material to be recycled.
How do the people on board get off the ship after beaching the vessel?? Also if imagination and fantasy were beached, then what is the other carnival ship that’s beached..?
What a shame they are a pile of scrap🤷🏼♂️I have been on them all and I understand why. These are not the only ones more will be scrapped. The Sensation and the ecstasy will be behind them. I have been doing NCL for the last 8 years.Sad to see these Carnival ships to go.

I sailed 3 of those ships back in the day. 2 more times on the Paradise out of Tampa. They really are / were the Fun Ships. I know it's inevitable but sad none the less...
These old vessels have already unable to bring profit. Also they were having problems with the classification societies. Also interior is outdated. But the worst part is the crew accommodation areas, they are like grave. I am happy to see thay these vessels are decommissioned.
Actually all of the cruise companies are hurting and are burning through their cash reserves. Scrapping obsolescent ships is a way of saving millions of dollars a month per ship. Also remember that the ships will need extensive refits to comply with the post-Covid safety standards. Also remember that the number of people cruising will be much lower. Even worse the requirements are for ships to operate at 50% capacity. Only the largest ships will be able to do this without hemorrhaging money.
And if it wasn't for silly COVID restrictions, the ship would still be sailing. She likely had 15 sold years at sea left. I last saw her of the coast of Huntington Beach before she headed south to the Panama Canal and to her death in Turkey.
Wife and I cruised on this ship in 1999, great memories. Now a widower and miss the good times. SORROW is now mine😢

So why is the ship sold with all the furniture etc inside
Because in my opinion that would also bring in a couple of dollars when sold
The labor cost is not matching the income from the furniture on board. The company decided to leave it. Simply, doesn't worth it.

Must have gone completely against the grain for the Master to deliberately run a ship aground.
Running the radar in case we hit something?
The ship still had to navigate to Aliaga.
Drivers head fell forward on to the steering wheel and just stayed pressed on the hooter button.
They also recycle oil drilling platforms. Good to know. Why? No idea, just like knowing.
The more cruise ships they can scrap, the better.
