Mary Elizabeth Frye wrote the poem “Do not stand at my grave and weep” to console her houseguest, a young woman, Margaret Schwarzkopf, for her loss of her mother. She never published or copyrighted the poem. She said “I thought it belonged to the world; it didn’t belong to me. I still feel that way … it was written out of love, for comfort.”
@@AlexStamov Wow thanks for that, that accredited version is so much better. Who the fuck in their right mind thought "i am the soft star that shines at night" was better than "I am the day transcending night" In retrospect it's completely in-congruent with the rest of the poem.
@xenn4985. I don't see how you could say that. The majority of the poem is about gentle, ambient presences. It works perfectly well and, in that respect, is more in keeping with the rest of the poem than the vainglorious original line.
This is the poem I read at my dad's funeral. It gets me everytime. I love and miss you forever and ever Dad. I carry you in my heart and soul always. A man of amazing kindness, honesty and integrity. Terry Eugene Koch 1958-2012
Great performance! My choir sang this this past fall and my director dedicated it to 2 of his students that had died in car crashes a couple of years before at his previous school.
Sorry, this song is so beautiful and sweet, I started to cry. Great performance! Just a bit unfair of the song to tell you, not to weep, but actually make you do so.
About 2 days ago. Me and my choir have sang this song. It’s one of my main favorites like ever! We have an UIL competition at over 3 songs. We did an amazing job of having straight ones. I’m very proud with that! This song reminded me of my math teacher, he died of having a heart attack. This song washed away my pain and worries, and help me to move on!
I sang this in a choir a couple years ago and I asked the pianist if I could record her playing the accompaniment, so I could cover it online (it was easier and less time consuming than learning it myself). I didn't get to do it yet because of the hardships of life and bad timing, but I still have it on my list of songs to do. The reason is because I planned on covering it for someone very special to me; a person who was the closest thing to a father in my life. He is gone and I miss him a lot. Today, I was going through a junk drawer and found a funeral card for a relative of mine (also a spectacular person). The words on the card were the words to this poem. I had no idea because I was pretty young when he passed away. I probably didn't even know it was a poem at the time. It makes me happy that those words were chosen for him though. This song is so lovely.
Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am harvest's golden grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I am not there. I did not die. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.
Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.
This is my favourite poem about loss.. it describes so well how us who are left should look for the memories of our loved ones.. They are in everything we experience, they are always with us.. if we let them be.. "do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die".. they live on in us, in our memories
Absolutely beautiful!! Though this poem/song has been attributed to a number of possible authors, it does not diminish its beauty in any way! So grateful to the dear friend who sent it to us when my wife's sister passed away yesterday! From Daily Poem: "This beautiful poem is probably one of the world's best known and best loved, but the identity of the author remains unconfirmed. There are several variations in print, but the version that appears here was published in The Gypsy magazine in 1934 with the byline of Clare Harner of Topeka, Kansas. The poem has also been attributed to Mary Elizabeth Clark Frye, a Baltimore housewife; Stephen Cummins, a British soldier; J.T. Wiggins, an Englishman who migrated to America; and Marianne Reinhardt (no information found). It's also been alleged as a Navajo burial prayer. Sadly, we may never know who gets the credit for these comforting words."
This poem has helped me get through many losses in my life and helped me cope with a sense of peace. This is such a beautiful rendition of it. Never thought of it as a song. Something about their collective humanity, those words and the music coming together feel transcendental.Thank you for sharing this. It touched my soul.
I remember struggling so much to get through that last note when we sang that in choir haha. It's so long. I'm pretty sure I would fade out, take a quick breath, and fade back in
Oh, please go read them. You’ll be so blessed. Just Google “do not stand by my grave and weep“. My knowledge of the mechanics of poetry extends no farther than high school English class, but I was struck by the uncommon AABBCC structure. I was surprised that the rhyming pattern carried through to the second verse (stanza?) because it felt so different from the first. The answer is in the number of sentences in each. But who cares about the structure? The words are breathtaking.
Версия этой песни в исполнении Лондонского хора мальчиков Либера намного интересней! А пение легендарных солистов этого хора Тома Калли и Эдвард Дэй просто гениально! Это просто неповторимый шедевр и лучшее исполнение в мире!!!
I just come from a very very picky choral department and all the spread vowels in this would never cut it with my choir, there would also be the "sound like grown women, not little girls".
I did not like the morose tone of this performance. It is supposed to be uplifting that you did not die but instead are in all of the beauty that God provides and you are now with Him. I prefer the other versions such as Katherine Jenkins that are uplifting, instead of depressing, as was the intent of the original poem!
In loving memory of Steffen Mikkelsen 10/05/92 - 25/02/17
The best friend i ever had and ever will have.
this poem was said at my husbands funeral ... beautiful !!!
he was 32 and we where married for 10 months ... he died 6 years ago...
so sorry for your loss......truly a moving performance
So sorry for your pain. May you find some comfort in the beauty around.💘
Sorry for your loss.
Love and Light on his way to eternity.
Feel tightly hugged.
Sorry for your loss.

My uncle said this poem at my Grandfathers funeral. He died a year ago last week.
Ravenclaw Pride May he rest in peace. Especially with this beautiful poem in memory of him.
They read this at my dad's funeral too. I feel you.
I will remember my dying grandparents forever and forever
We had my dad's funeral yesterday. This is very helpful in this time of sorrow

Oh what angelic voices.... And such beautiful harmonies. I will remember my mum with this song.

Saw this poem on a Facebook post and remembered singing it in my high school choir. Brought back good memories
Practicing it for my high school choir rn lol. Happy coincidence.

Awesome
Wonderful poem and song. I always feel the last note should be higher and triumphant /|\
first version of this I've heard besides libera's.

Is it a religious poem?
Is it made for religion purpose?
Simply, it's a belief in eternal life after death as we know it on earth - a continuing existence on a different level. Hope this helps.

Not a fan of all this :(
