What a wealth of useful information to stumble onto, I've got half an eye on a lifting keel ali yacht, and I bump into Chuffed by 'accident' (don't think I can blame the algorithm!) Good stuff, thanks!!
What a task That was! Luckily you had the yard fellows to help you out with it’s positioning. Having the keel in the up position really does allow you to moor in much shallower waters, saving wear & tear on the anchor droid! Loved seeing you so happy and doing your “keel dance”!
dont forget to put some duralac on the pivot cover screws! you have ss screws going into aluminum that is close to water! good to see the boat coming together!
Sometimes the most dreaded of jobs can turn out to be fairly simple and quick. I just went through that with the door of a trailer I'm working on. Fit like a glove.
Bowline knots can undo themselves when they get wet: I've seen it happen 3 times in one single Wednesday night race (jibsheet was tied using a bowline, jibsheet was wet): our fire department banned personal from using the bowline for anything “life safety”. Personally, I'd consider the downhaul on your keel “life safety” because if that line comes undone while you're turtled, a few bad things would happen all simultaneously. Just my 2 cents, it's your boat after all.
thats good to know, thankfully it is not a huge disaster for us if it comes undone -but as you said itll almost definitely happen at the most inconvenient time!
Sheddy. The new non-skid will not be slippery with deck shoes on. Probably made with that idea in mind as a sailor should not be on deck, when sailing, without sailing gloves and shoes. Saves a ton of medical incidents. :) :)
Good to see this. We have a similar device on our Feeling. We re-did the lines using spectra with spliced loops which attach with shackles onto the keel. I didn't see a safety strop on yours. Our has one and they do break if your keel sets off on its own when out if the water - how do I know that.... Next time I will just use dyneema and make my own. Oh, the other thing we have is plexiglas plates on the top of the centreboard/keel box so we can watch the fish and check to see if the centreboard is still attached.
Recently did the same thing on a smaller scale, removing a steel centerplate on a trailer sailer, refurbishing and replacing. They either line up easily or you are there for a long, long time.
Good job ligning everything Up🙂 Next time having a Pieces of Wood between the axel and the hammer is better than hitting metal against metal Thank you for sharing
Check out a knot called an anchor bend. It will give you twice the bearing on the steel loop, cutting down the amount of chafe you'll get with just one turn, which is the weakness in the system you have, or at least wrap the rope around twice before you tie the bowline.
Big Day ! I walked out after starting the video, (I always click it back) and heard you talking about Wabbits and thought , ok, that was fast, we are doing Wabbit surgery ... No Wabbits, just Wopes. Darn, I like Wabbits. The Keel is a work of art. Especially now that you've rebuilt it, Very nice work . I know Jim pulled the hard job on that one...
@@VetTails You mean this time awound ? ha ha, love those old not so pc cartoons of the 50s, which I actually watched (I'm a little older than most of you). One thing I actually haven't seen in Mejico is pet Wabbits.
I hope you remembered to put some lube (rubber grease ) on those o-rings before you tightened the final plates on the keel axle, Congrats on having the keel in, big step won't be long now, Splash Cheers from OZ
The freee end of that knot on the keel (gassa d'amante, in italian) shoul be quite longer, just for the knot to not become undone.....(for future reference...)
5:16 I replayed that like ten times, I couldn't stop laughing you meowed like a cat there...when I'm banging something like that axle in I put wood in front of it or hit it with wood, metal on metal can flare the end. A 2 X 4 makes a great hammer, (a 4 x 4 an even better one).... Obviously not a problem it's in but be careful!!!! I'm wondering how you are going to remove the tape with the first layers all cured...damn she is looking better and better, when I see you guys under way again it its going to be a sight to see!!!
Great job!! Amazing that whole keel is on that one pivot point. By the way lol... Have any scorpions found there way on to the boat? I'm sorry, but that video where you found some in the sail gave me the hebbie-jeebies.
Hi, sorry for the very late reply, but we found the keel wobbled side to side, so we knew the axle needed attention. I think if there is no play in the keel its probably holding on ok!
Zaya only draws 4'-5" for her 11.3m, what I see about the benefit of Chuffed is that if you have to you can run her aground on sand, I cant do that well thats my theory ...
Great Video Thanks! it's probably a transitional fit. little to no fitting play. oil the axle and put it in the freezer for a few hours so that the diameter shrinks. oil beforehand because the high humidity condenses on the axle. better thin oil instead of soapy water.🫣 by the way, the swiss are considered watchmakers, not the germans.🤫😉😅 Enjoy !!!🤗cheers Mario
You’re probably already in the water and your work it amazing (boat and animals)! Bowlines are not the best for your keel application as they can come undone if the line repeatedly slackens, unless you also terminate them with a half hitch or locking hitch. Problem with that is the knot then becomes very large. A tidier solution is a halyard hitch. This is super secure and compact, but must almost alway be cut off if you want to remove. You might be able to use a fid to get it undone, but plan on cutting it off as the line will most likely be damaged. Because it is so compact you’re not loosing much line. Check out animatedknots dot com for a great set of knot how to’s. Can’t wait to see you guys in the water again. Fair winds.
How often are you untying those lines in their life? I'd be fine cutting it off. I've had a bowline on my jibsheet come undone 3 times in one Wednesday night race (My self confidence was so wrecked by the end of the night that I had one of the most senior sailors come over to make sure I actually was tying it right). I won't use it now unless it's safetied with an overhand knot.
Ok good to know, thankfully if the rope does come undone its not a disaster for us because you can reach in and tie another one... but would be annoying for sure so might re-tie thanks!
@@VetTails rope type, quality and size also play an important role in the reliability of a bowline, so you may be fine. “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.” Great that you have options.
Hello, courageous ones! Some quick remarks from one with 40 kNm over 30 years on a 40 ft aluminium centerboarder ( French too...); first; looks like you do NOT have a swing keel, but a centerboard, quite different in manoeuvers( and in weight for moving it!) remember you also can lift it(more or less) for downwind rides! Then, please, please do remove the bolts on the shaft covers, and refit them with a smear of Duralac or equivalent,(tefgel) and put a nylon washer under a ss washer if you want to be able to remove them one day. Same for the nuts on the well cover. I can see you replaced the guides on the sides, be sure they a re in Acetal or equivalent , because nylon, polyethylene or else will expand in salt water and act as very strong brake pads. Well, no more advices, I don't want to be intrusive, good luck , Sail Safe! Michel
Hi! Thank you for the advice, we did use an acetal equivalent, thankfully our boat building friend warned us. I never truly understood when it was a centre board vs swing - ours 'swings' up into the boat so I assumed that's what she was!
Check out You Tube videos on how to do a reeving eye splice. Makes mating lines for pulling MUCH easier and it gives a really nice finish to your lines. Also, in the stop, there is usually a part inside that will lift up to allow lines to be run through. Hope these help in the future. Boat is looking great!

How boring is watching your videos. They're always the same. We have to wait for a week to see 2 holes in the wood and and glue 20 tiles into the kitchen sink. These works had to be done when the boat was on the dry spot. By now, it's been a long time that the boat is in the water and hasn't done a meter yet. And the wood is already ruined and in need of restoration.
