China's Cheapest Smartphone... Pass or Fail? (+ Drop Test!)

- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- I have recently become a massive fan of @Mrwhosetheboss, an awesome tech reviewer here on RUclips who sometimes likes to buy super #cheap #smartphones from #China to test them out.
Usually, Mrwhosetheboss makes his purchases on Wish.com, but for this video, I went on China's three major e-commerce platforms (JD.com, Taobao, and Pinduoduo) to seek out the cheapest smartphone I could find.
The package arrived literally within 18 hours of placing the order... and this video is all about finding out what $25US can buy you in a smartphone in China.
This video was inspired by @Mrwhosetheboss, although unfortunately, I don't have quite as nice a sounding accent as he does. But, if you found this video interesting, make sure you check out his channel because he makes some really creative videos.
Also - I would just like to point out that China has really come a long way in terms of production quality. When you watch the video, you'll find out what I mean.

Some background information on Chinese smartphones:
China's smartphone industry, over the years, has witnessed its fair share of failures along with the speedy rise of companies like #Huawei and #Xiaomi as the smartphone market booms in the country. Some of the failures over the years include Gionee, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer that was among the first Chinese firms to break into the lucrative Indian market; however, it went bust. There was also Vsun, a Chinese contract manufacturer that laid off all of its employees on the same day it filed for bankruptcy. Small players have been squeezed even tighter amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in Chinese phone-makers refocusing their efforts back to their home market, according to industry analysts - hence the reemergence of the super-cheap, affordable phone, and also high-end models that suit Chinese tastes.
But the rapid emergence of China's phone-makers on the global stage underscores the country's rising technological prowess. It comes as Beijing seeks to catch up and eventually overtake the US as the global technological leader across 10 high-tech sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, and even electric vehicles, as part of an ambitious master plan known as Made in China 2025.
It's this very plan that has fueled the costly trade war between Washington and Beijing, however, meaning many consumers in the United States are not familiar with many of China's most popular smartphone brands. Despite the troubles, China is leading the world in terms of developing 5G technologies.
Still, some Chinese phone-makers are poised to gain market share from Apple and Samsung despite the coronavirus pandemic, which has ravaged the global economy and disrupted supply chains, according to a number of reports.
Ah appreciate the shoutout - Great vid!

Hey everyone, Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快樂!
Just wanted to let you know that this package arrived within 18 hours of placing the order - so a HUGE thumbs-up for the couriers here in China. Shipping is super-fast here, especially when you consider that shipping costs are included in the price of the phone itself! This is the longest video I have ever posted. If you enjoyed it, let me know, and I'll make more videos like this in the future.
All the best for the Year of the Ox!
For $25, I can't even get a decent meal today over here. So, a smart phone of this quality is incredible.
I agree - I can't believe that you can buy a phone of this quality for such a low price! I was definitely surprised!
@@Hazza_Harding Where can we buy it? I´m from Germany and for such a price you can´t do anything wrong to give it a try.
I highly appreciate the phone producer to make an affordable phone available for low end customer. This is very important for the society.
I agree - $25 is definitely within a lot of people's budgets, and it enables them to access the internet and connect with people. I think they did a great job making a decent phone for an incredibly low price
@@Hazza_Harding thanks for your great video as it reveals great thoughts behind it.

For sure it could be a hit in many countries, but probably not in the western world. In many of the poor countries it would still be most of a month earnings.
This phone fit for many poor people especially in Africa. Awesome.
But India will boycott this phone. They can stick to iPhone.
Yeah - this phone is great for people that need to access the Internet but may be slightly restricted in terms of finances. Thanks for watching, and for commenting!

Quick technical suggestion - only use the audio from one of the cameras. If you are using FCPX (as you are an Apple user) it is very easy to do. PS I came to your channel from Matt Galat.

Happy New Year to you too! We are one big family!
Such phones are specifically designed for third world countries, especially African countries. They removed a lot of fancy features, but increased battery life and system stability. At the same time, they use more components that can be replaced in order to save costs and reduce the complexity of maintenance. This allows these phones to be used for basic communication and entertainment while being more durable and longstanding.
Yeah - considering the price, this is definitely a very durable phone! I was surprised!

@@Hazza_Harding Sorry do not have the link 🙏
@@amsetiawan7230 No worries, I'll do a little search
Very interesting. Just check Ali Express, they carry DOOV phones, so it can be bought in N American. As expected, the price inside China is a lot less for the most basic phone. It is certainly one way to enable every Chinese to have affordable phone access to use China's digital currency. Digital currency is one tool among many to take away US$ supremacy as the reserve currency, when commerce can be transacted between two parties without ever using US$ or the SWIFT system.
Those cheap phones are usually a pain to use. This one still seems better compared to the fake huawei tablet I bought i Shanghai some years ago.
Yeah - this phone was actually usable... and it was much cheaper than all of the phones that were trying to emulate the Huawei or Samsung flagship phones!
Well still works after it total itself, pretty impressive. Thank mate
No problem 👍
Really no bad, how do they still make money?
Honestly, I have no idea!!
I think even iPhones' cost of production could be around 100 usd or 200 usd, just the brand name that allows the phone price to increase.
@@hs5944 Hmm... I would need to look into that, but with the components that Apple is now using, I think that the production costs of their devices have also increased. I still love my Apple phone - but this cheap phone really surprised me! Although, I would need to use it for an extended period of time before I could vouch for its durability
I would be happy to get this as a spare phone. I have a very slow Samsung A10e ($100)spare phone. It is slow, no dual sim, no sd card slot.
Can I mail order outside China?
You know what, I am actually considering keeping this as a spare phone... because it is not terrible to use, and if I am ever in a pinch, I am sure that it would save me! Although, I still have my iPhone X to fall back on which is still very usable.
Happy Chinese New Year! It might win the cheapest smartphone award, :)

Be a great valentines day gift if you need to get rid of her. Put it in the iPhone 12 box for a real angry reaction and have your song as the ring tone. For some reason this review, you and the dog reminded me of Argos cartoon connection. Happy new cow,
That is a really creative way to break up with someone, although I don't think I could bring myself to ever do something like that... I would feel way too bad!
This would be considered a decent mid-range Android phone seven or eight years ago. It's just a very old model, but the workmanship is okay.😊
Agree - the build-quality of the phone is definitely okay
Useful phone when travelling overseas esp. with the dual sim card function.
I agree! Also, it's not a big deal if it gets lost or stolen!
Forgot to ask, how's the battery ?
I didn't test the battery - it came with about 75% charge... and it hardly dropped throughout filming, so I guess that this phone has a pretty long battery life! That is something I should have covered - thanks for reminding me! I will keep it in mind for future videos if I do something similar!
The battery is long life. I use xiaomi and redmi. But for both battery long last. For example I used to watch film or movie using redmi, for 1-2 % battery I can use for 45 minutes movie.
@@accsum6630 Yeah - for the Chinese smartphones that I have used, I have found that the battery life is crazy long. Especially for the low-cost options. I once used a Xiaomi phone as a backup phone, and sometimes I only had to charge it twice per week.
The US might also want to produce low cost products or make available (import) similar product to give option for its less affordable community.
People should buy high end product because they can afford to pay, not because they have no option.
That is true - and also, I think people should get into the habit of only buying the things that they can afford. If you need to take out a loan to buy a phone, I think that is taking it one step too far
Happy the year of ox!
btw, Is your finger broken?
Hey - yeah, it is a minor fracture... but should be good as gold really soon!
Happy Year of the Ox to you too!
