I'm disappointed in Twitter for this. The API used to be free, but X decided to close it off and heavily monetize it. I used to run a bunch of bots that retweeted people's Switch shares for various games. Those all died.
No tears here. But the idea that we could get a new social media platform that was ONLY fun little gameplay snippets sounds great. Just, as a consumer of Twitter, it's unfathomably garbage. There has to be a different way.
Miiverse as a social media was a complete failure. The ecosystem was only open to those that owned a 3DS or Wii U, which is terrible for growing a community. I dont think Nintendo wants to go back to managing a community like that again.
@@lordderpingtonIINintendo has mobile games now too, and the Switch app. Plus a much larger userbase. Miiverse would probably work better nowadays tbh
We know why, it’s the same reason other consoles dropped Twitter. Musk started charging for API access, costs between 40-200k a MONTH. Obviously, the consoles responded with “we don’t need you, you needed us” and dropped that shit harder than a diss track.
I really liked Miiverse. I remember posting a screenshot to it in Majora’s Mask 3D, asking the community for guidance with getting one of the fairies in the Goron Temple, coming back in an hour or so, and seeing the tips others left. It felt like getting help from a friend, rather than looking up some guide online, and it didn’t spoil anything else in the game. Unlike a guide, this presented me with exactly the information I wanted, rather than all the solutions to the all the puzzles in the area. I just wish it had been faster, and easier to navigate (on every platform including mobile).
I might have cared at one point but unless you already have a ton of followers, posting anything to Twitter was like shouting into an endless void where nobody could hear you anyways.
Yeah, Twitter is an important platform, but I can totally understand why Nintendo maybe doesn't want to pay to send their family friendly audience to a place where everyone gets spammed by porn bots.
I remember when that was the only way to get your screencaps off of the switch. You'd have to post them to FB or Twitter before Nintendo created their convoluted QR code system
Twitter integration was the centerpiece of a World of Warcraft patch during its 6th expansion. Fast forward to the 10th expansion; suddenly, Twitter started charging hefty fees. Blizzard said "we're not paying that" and completely axed Twitter integration. I'm surprised Nintendo took this long to do the same.
I’m hoping they’ll add the functionality to Bluesky or threads or soemthing cause this was one of the best features the switch had. It was always nice seeing other people’s clips uploaded and it was the easiest way to transfer stuff even with the QR thing
That's not even inaccurate, that's literally what happened to all three consoles. They're not paying the exorbitant API costs when the share feature used to be free.
3:40 "We all complain about Twitter and we talk about going somewhere else but we don't. We just don't." You're speaking for yourself there, Arlo. Almost everyone I know has deleted their Twitter and moved to Mastodon or BlueSky. You know, Fediverse stuff. Or sometimes they don't move at all, they just delete Twitter and spend more time on Discord.
The team that makes Splatoon and Animal Crossing are the only ones who seem to know how to use the Nintendo Switch Online app, but it makes the experience that tiny bit better because of it. I have so many images of Smallfry on my phone. Emotional support salmon.
I can’t say this effects me much as I never bothered signing up for Twitter, and that has proven to be a VERY good idea. Still, totally agree that it’s far too much of a hassle to get screenshots off the Switch. I eventually just resorted to taking pics of the screenshots and accepting it’s gonna look crappy like that. Definitely something Nintendo could improve on.
The quality is probably better than getting it off your Switch because the quality of the screenshots suck after you download the picture to your phone
Im fairly certain nobody else cares because it's not terribly difficult to plug your Switch into your computer via USB-C and directly copy screenshots and videos from the gallery over, though I get the feeling a lot of people don't know about that feature. Doing it this way makes sure they're the highest quality, I've found too.
Ok but the explanation is actually pretty simple: In order for the whole Switch connecting to twitter thing to work you need tools provided by twitter (the api if I’m not mistaken) and twitter is starting to charge lotsa money for those tools (I think like 40 grand a month or something like that when it uses to be 3) and Nintendo said “nah, we’re good” and thus is dropping support because twitter tried to pull a %1000 price hike on it
You go to a website, and it's set up in a way that's easy for humans to read You go to the API and you get the same information, but in a way that's easy for a computer to read That's pretty much it. It doesn't actually have to be a website, it can be anything, but that's the least scary version of what an API is
Arlo if you care about gaming I suggest you learn more about basic things like what an API is. Think of it like a key that allows one program to communicate with another. with a twitter API you can post to twitter without needing to install a whole app. It just communicates and tells the API to post to your account
I mostly used the Twitter intergation to repost to my Tumblr mod blog where I actually still get interactions on my posts (with a third party tool to download the videos). I don't really use Facebook at all these days and that's why it was easy to choose Twitter instead because I still use Twitter to contact people and find info on certain things.
Honestly I hope the next generation console has something adjacent to miiverse. Just about every single thing that I sent over to Twitter through my Nintendo switch never got any traction because Twitter is filled to the brim with everything else thus it gets drowned out.
The only reason I used it was to get my screenshots off of my switch, but now that you can transfer to your phone with a QR code, it's not really a big deal to me. Twitter was more convenient though.
It’s exorbitantly expensive to use an api nowadays. You can always get your screenshots and videos off of your sd card arlo! Makes it pretty easy if you have an adapter
Completely fair that some people are disappointed, I just don't care because... it's Twitter. Never had an account, never want to get one. Not an elitist or anything, I just don't think I'd like it based on... everything XD
I... guess if I ever want to post something from my Switch again, I'll need to do one of these workarounds and hope it works. Far and away, most of my tweets were... that, photos and videos from Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles.
Pretty much everyone is sad this is going away, but it's pretty clear the reason is Twitter (or "X")'s fault. They changed how much it cost to allow third party apps/things to connect to Twitter, so much so that many are dropping it (I think it's $50,000 to $100,000 a month?). It just isn't worth it, and for Nintendo I 100% understand. The whole "App that syncs to your account screenshots and etc." idea is what Nintendo should do for the next console, that way you can use whatever social media you want, be it Twitter or Facebook or just in friend DMs. Now we just have the QR code thing, which is pretty tedious.
4:55 for me, the send to smartphone feature has always worked. Its definitely a little convoluted but i have no ossue with it. Hiw it works is you scan one QR code which contains data for a wifi hotspot your switch turns on, your phone connects to the hotspot and you have to scan another QR code that is a link to a website where you'll find your videos or picture that you then download locally to your phone
@@edwheezer6231 Its a bit finicky for me. Usually my phone asks me if i want to connect to the hotspot after i connected. I guess as a secutity measure?? Not sure. I’ve never used direct Twitter integration on my Switch, but I’ve haven’t run into an issue with the online image dump method, so far. Great Stuff, as always.
I used to also use this feature quite a lot and it's such a bummer that it's going away. Same thing happened with the PS4 share functions late last year and it just sucks that now there's no easy way to share game screenshots nor videos anywhere :(
Transferring screenshots and videos from your switch to your phone is pretty consistent for me, but depending on your phone it may have features that cause problems if you have data turned on while you do it. If you turn off data before doing it then it may fix your issues
I’m glad I can upload art on Splatoon 3 without it being uploaded to twitter by mandatory. But.. sadly that feature is being erased from Splatoon 2 completely, which bums me out a bit.
I have a Twitter account just for uploading Switch screenshots and videos. It makes it so easy to access the media really fast and tweeting it from my personal account or adding the clips to a video I'm working on. Such a useful feature. Oh well.
Arlo, FYI, Its rediculously easy to get content off of your Switch. Just use a USB C cable, and connect it to your Switch. Have the other side connect to your PC, and BAM, its right there
I hope they remake something like miiverse on the next switch to replace common social media or at least have a main platform feature. Twitter is just a fraction of what we could do with our screenshots and Online functions
Can we at least get a Nintendo approved app for yoinking pics & vids to post on any of our social media? The interface on the Switch was kinda garbage. (I've had a lot of good usefulness out of SwitchBuddy, but that's 3rd party)
@@mjc0961You really really think that removing the SD card and plugging on the PC is easier than uploading them directly from the switch to an app? Also let me save you some time, you don't have to remove the SD card, just connect the switch itself using a USB cable
You can technically still export them, it’s just tedious. In my experience, it takes about 5 minutes per video and less time the more screenshots you export
Deleted my Twitter account after elon fired most of the security team so losing this feature doesn't bother me. PlayStation is losing this as well for the same reason. Hopefully better social media sites finally take over.
I myself left X/Twitter last month, so this doesn't really affect me, but I am surprised to hear the QR Code option is that troublesome for you because I personally never had an issue (outside of not initially having the Scanner app readily installed on my old phone) with that method. In fact, it's my go-to way to share unless I wanna back up things for the sake of space, then I just plug the SD Card into the PC and transfer them that way. The other interesting thing is that they're dropping support for X, but not Facebook. So I can't help but suspect there's something else going on there.
I'm not too torn up on it because I don't use Twitter too much anymore outside of following artists who haven't moved to Mastodon/Cohost/Bluesky/whatever other alternative site. But, it was nice having the ability to so easily post screenshots and videos on Twitter. And I'll echo the hope that Switch 2 at least has an easier way of transferring stuff to other devices, so I can share photos and clips on Discord or Mastodon.
I use it all the time its one of my favorite features. Always so fun to share what is happening from any switch game im playing. I inow most dont care but it makes me sad personally. Now it'll just be more of a hassle to move the videos and screenshots to the phone
I think this is a good change actually for splatoon 3 specifically, I never liked having to post my bad dumb plaza art posts to a social media for everyone to possibly see, having them only be seen in game is perfect for me
I used to share moments of my Pokémon Nuzlocke adventures with my friends on Twitter with that feature. I stopped a few years ago when I left Twitter entirely but still sad to think I couldn't do it now.
Mii-verse would be dope. Maybe they could expand the phone app into it? Like, they did all the video stuff with Smash. Just expand that to work with the Switch(2) gallery and also post text. It's probably way harder than that but the base is there. I think.
I was surprised at how many people I saw not really caring about this feature, this was by far the easiest way to share screenshots and videos from the switch, sending to the phone is cumbersome with the small limit of how many you can send and having to connect to the switch network first, and connecting to a PC is even worse, I also liked when games had default hashtags, it was nice checking out other people playing the same game, specially for smaller niche games
This isn't about accessing twitter since you were never able to do it from the switch regardless, it's about having an easy way to share screenshots and videos
I liked the feature on Switch and PS5 before both were taken away. All that follows me on there is a few friends, but it was the most convenient way to share with them. If Nintendo revamps their app for the future maybe they could do it that way. Sony's method of letting you access recent uploads is ok. I get why they can't give you access to everything all the time as that would probably get expensive for them on the server side, but it could be better.
5:09 I used to have it not work all the time too until I figured out what I did wrong! Okay so for the QR stuff, you have to turn off both your wi-fi and your data to get the Switch qr code thing to work This is because the QR code makes it's own custom wifi address that you have to connect to, so you can't have any other Internet connections when you're connecting to it Hope that helps Arlo ^^
I don't care that twitter started charging more. Nintendo could have put a dang browser on the Switch. That would solve all of these issues. Ever other modern console, including nintendo's older consoles, had some form of a browser.
Well Nintendo broke the seal on consoles not having a browser so the PS5 doesn't either. If not for the Switch's massive success, it probably would. The PSPortal doesn't either. And I would expect the Switch 2 and PS6 to also not have a browser.
I remember a Yahtzee comment forever ago (on a video that was overall pretty critical of Nintendo) where he nevertheless gave them credit for making a gaming console rather than a shit PC. That may not have been his exact phrasing, but close enough. Personally, I'm happy with my gaming console being a place where I can just go to play some fun games, and not have the rest of the internet crawling in and tracking mud all over the place.
@sambarris9843 it connects to the internet anyways, and you can connect to a static IP and browse the internet on the switch anyways. It just doesn't hwve the conveniences of a modern browser. Nintendo could put a bare bones chromium browser on their next console and it wouldn't detract from a solid console. They aren't mutually exclusive.
To this day, I still don't understand Twitter. I think I like Facebook because it's actively worse. You get a handful of old memes, and some crap that some of your friends are up to, and that's it. Twitter just doesn't seem enjoyable at all. The only time I ever use twitter is because I want to occasionally see if a person has something to say about something that I can't find anywhere else. That's it.
Downloading screenshots and clips from my Switch to my phone has always been pretty easy in my experience. Honestly, once they added that cell phone connection feature, I never touched the Twitter option again.
4:48 You don’t have to hook your phone to your Switch. As of a few updates back you can connect your Switch directly to your PC to move photos and screenshots. You just need a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable (The same type of cable that a lot of elgatos use. Even if you don’t have one, they’re cheap to obtain).
I think I've maybe had an issue getting my captures to my phone once out of a number of times doing it. Unfortunately it's still so cumbersome even when it works that it's still only worth using for the ones that you REALLY want to share
The Switch has a feature to copy screenshots and videos to a PC by connecting the Switch to the PC with a USB C to USB A cable. (This same type of cables come packaged with Pro Controllers) Go to System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos > Copy to a Computer via USB Connection
API literally only means "Application Programming Interface". It's firmware one layer on top of the operating system of a computer/video game console which interfaces directly with application software (games). It's basically software that is the translator/middleman between the basic input-output/computation code that runs the hardware and the higher-level programming code that makes up an application/game. I imagine what they're talking about is Twitter is making changes to its codebase that would not be friendly with the API of the Switch's Horizon Operating System.
I used Twitter for like a week. Someone I had on FB complained I posted too much, and that I should make a Twitter. So I did, and linked it to my FB and to post on FB everytime I posted on Twitter, and I posted more, and faster than ever.thus leading to more posts on FB, pissing that individual off even more. Malicious compliance is your friend. Then I got off Twitter and never went back. I don't blame Nintendo. I wouldn't want to be linked to X now either, especially with Elon doing his shit. The feature would be amazing with other platforms, or as you said, just an easier way to get my clips and pics online. I'd love to share with Discord friends more easily.
Twitter, Discord, Reddit, the Facebook crap and the other stinky sites all blow. I'm an avid commenter on ReVanced and would happily migrate if I could, but RUclips and every social site's UI, UX, community and privacy policies are incredibly gross. Really wishing the internet could return to its 2010 backup.
Yeah, this really is disappointing news. You're very right about the sending images to mobile feature barely working, and one of the only two reasons I made a Twitter account was to send images to myself like that. When I first heard the switch would be losing Twitter support I genuinely got upset because how else am I going to reliably send myself clips or images now?
You know what would be awesome? If a government (that supports basic freedom of speech) hosted its own public forum instead of relying on for-profit companies. In the same exact way that physical mail or libraries are services that don't necessarily make money, I would be willing to have some of my taxes going into fund a public access online space. It doesn't have to be the best out there, it just has to be a solid foundation that for-profit companies must be better than if they want to compete. Some kind of buffer against the whole "race to the bottom" we see in all online services because there isn't anyone big and powerful enough to even attempt real competition.

@@lordderpingtonIINintendo has mobile games now too, and the Switch app. Plus a much larger userbase. Miiverse would probably work better nowadays tbh
You can plug your switch into your PC to transfer pictures and videos as well, I've never had problems doing that. I've never used a phone to do it.
"I don't know how expensive Twitter was making it for Nintendo"
I actually have a number. 42,000 dollars a month at minimum, so 504,000 a year

Twitter is a dying platform. There’s no reason for Nintendo to spend more on a sinking ship.
By all accounts, X is continually falling apart behind the scenes. I wouldn't be surprised if this was happening because of something on their end.
Is it though?
We know why, it’s the same reason other consoles dropped Twitter. Musk started charging for API access, costs between 40-200k a MONTH.
Obviously, the consoles responded with “we don’t need you, you needed us” and dropped that shit harder than a diss track.
@@jackcrowley2021 for reference, it used to be free. going from nothing at all to over a million dollars a year is kind of a big deal.

By "something" on their end "behind the scenes," you mean "Elon Musk" right? 😉
Regardless, it was, for me, a place to put it so I could then post it to Reddit or whatever.
Except the link in bio bots
Any big company leaving twitter is a good news
I haven't used Twitter since like, 2014. If I want to share something it's usually over discord and I just throw my SD card in my computer.
Yeah, Twitter is an important platform, but I can totally understand why Nintendo maybe doesn't want to pay to send their family friendly audience to a place where everyone gets spammed by porn bots.
Twitter is a burning hellscape. No loss.
While its probably not easier, you can connect your undocked switch to your computer and get all your files there. Even sorted in folders by game.
…who uses Twitter anymore?
I remember when that was the only way to get your screencaps off of the switch. You'd have to post them to FB or Twitter before Nintendo created their convoluted QR code system
The QR code thing is super cool tbf
You can just put your Switch SD card into your PC to transfer them. That was always an alternative.
@@WyattporterIt's a little convoluted considering most phones don't have an QR code reader on default
@@wiltfoster5386 Most phone OSs made in the last decade have QR readers built into the default camera app; opening your camera isn't very convoluted
It really isn't that convoluted
Twitter integration was the centerpiece of a World of Warcraft patch during its 6th expansion.
Fast forward to the 10th expansion; suddenly, Twitter started charging hefty fees.
Blizzard said "we're not paying that" and completely axed Twitter integration. I'm surprised Nintendo took this long to do the same.
I’m hoping they’ll add the functionality to Bluesky or threads or soemthing cause this was one of the best features the switch had. It was always nice seeing other people’s clips uploaded and it was the easiest way to transfer stuff even with the QR thing
I can picture Nintendo responding in a Rorschach voice, "I didn't lose support from X, THEY LOST SUPPORT FROM ME."
That's not even inaccurate, that's literally what happened to all three consoles. They're not paying the exorbitant API costs when the share feature used to be free.
3:40 "We all complain about Twitter and we talk about going somewhere else but we don't. We just don't."
You're speaking for yourself there, Arlo.
You can plug the Switch into your computer, or take the microSD out and plug it into your computer. It’s really easy.
Ok but the explanation is actually pretty simple: In order for the whole Switch connecting to twitter thing to work you need tools provided by twitter (the api if I’m not mistaken) and twitter is starting to charge lotsa money for those tools (I think like 40 grand a month or something like that when it uses to be 3) and Nintendo said “nah, we’re good” and thus is dropping support because twitter tried to pull a %1000 price hike on it
You go to a website, and it's set up in a way that's easy for humans to read
You go to the API and you get the same information, but in a way that's easy for a computer to read
That's pretty much it.
I deleted my Twitter for a Facebook. Had my Twitter account for almost 10 years, and the drama just went too far. I don't miss it.
Wait, we’re supposed to get it until June 10th? Hey, they took my access early!
Nah dude, we aren’t all still there. I dipped when I couldn’t take it anymore. Absolute cesspool of hate over there now.
X wanting more money, and nintendo said no.
The best thing out of it was when Pikmin 1+2 came out and everyone experiencing it for the first time shared their hilarious moments
Same here, though I have a few friends it just doesn't work for at all. It seems almost random based on the person.
@@edwheezer6231 Its a bit finicky for me. Usually my phone asks me if i want to connect to the hotspot after i connected. I guess as a secutity measure?? Not sure. But i'm given 3 options,
Always connect
Connect only this one time
and Don't connect.
That might be where people grt hung up on or it coupd just be general incompatibiloty stuff I'm not smart enough to understand
So dumb from Twitter to charge money for increasing the value of the network.
Honestly I hope Nintendo is the first of many companies to move entirely away from Twitter
Xbox and PlayStation already did
*last
It's far from the first.
Nintendo is going out of business soon, who cares
@technobladeleakedclips1827 ??? Do you realize they company isn't in comption with Xbox or Playstation. They rival Disney in toys and merch sales that can fuel making a cinematic universe even if no one goes to see any of the movies
I’m loving this new channel. It’s always great having more content.
API stands for "apple pie"
I’m glad I can upload art on Splatoon 3 without it being uploaded to twitter by mandatory.
But.. sadly that feature is being erased from Splatoon 2 completely, which bums me out a bit.
If Miiverse comes out, i would be down .
I have a Twitter account just for uploading Switch screenshots and videos. It makes it so easy to access the media really fast and tweeting it from my personal account or adding the clips to a video I'm working on. Such a useful feature. Oh well.
My condolences on losing Deli Mustard, must have been painful.
quit twitter months ago, it really isn't that hard.
Twitter is just a fraction of what we could do with our screenshots and Online functions
idk the QR code thing is pretty cool. idk how secure it is, but it's been pretty good at what it sets out to do for me
It works well enough although when it fails it fails hard
Can we at least get a Nintendo approved app for yoinking pics & vids to post on any of our social media? The interface on the Switch was kinda garbage. (I've had a lot of good usefulness out of SwitchBuddy, but that's 3rd party)
Why on earth would I want another bloatware app to install on my phone when I can just plug in the SD card via an adapter and use the file manager?
@@mjc0961 instant gratification?
Convenience is determined by the user's preferences.
@@mjc0961You really really think that removing the SD card and plugging on the PC is easier than uploading them directly from the switch to an app?

It is.
It's called Twitter.
Put the microSD card in your computer and upload it yourself, it's legitimately faster than using the Twitter sharing.
@@UltimaKeyMaster You have to be trolling
I am disappointed, too. I have an account dedicated to Switch & PS4 screenshots. Now, it's going to be useless...
You can technically still export them, it’s just tedious. In my experience, it takes about 5 minutes per video and less time the more screenshots you export
@@minecrafter3448 I'll have to look into it. Maybe it won't be so bad. It's just not going to be as nice and seamless as before
I really appreciate iCarlo's gripe of the day. Great channel.
Deleted my Twitter account after elon fired most of the security team so losing this feature doesn't bother me. PlayStation is losing this as well for the same reason.
Hopefully better social media sites finally take over.
What? really? source please that's the first time I've heard about it😯
I myself left X/Twitter last month, so this doesn't really affect me, but I am surprised to hear the QR Code option is that troublesome for you because I personally never had an issue (outside of not initially having the Scanner app readily installed on my old phone) with that method. In fact, it's my go-to way to share unless I wanna back up things for the sake of space, then I just plug the SD Card into the PC and transfer them that way.
The other interesting thing is that they're dropping support for X, but not Facebook. So I can't help but suspect there's something else going on there.
Twitter made its API $40,000 USD a month to use. Thats why.
Nintendo's thing is increasing net happiness in the world.
X formerly twitter decreases net happiness.
I don't see this as a loss.
I think.
I wish this was related to the next Nintendo console but I know that it isn't.
It's a gaming device, not a cell phone, or PC, or tablet or the hundred other things you can access Twitter on.
No Twitter is not the biggest that price goes to Instagram so they already have a deal with Facebook so they could replace it with Instagram support
5:09 I used to have it not work all the time too until I figured out what I did wrong!
Okay so for the QR stuff, you have to turn off both your wi-fi and your data to get the Switch qr code thing to work
This is because the QR code makes it's own custom wifi address that you have to connect to, so you can't have any other Internet connections when you're connecting to it
Hope that helps Arlo ^^
I mean, yeah, it’s disappointing. But from what we know, if it’s Twitter raising costs to allow that function, it’s disappointing on their end.
1000% agree, especially because the switch literally has a functional browser that we just cant use for whatever reason
Well, the reason Nintendo and all other consoles don't have web browsers anymore is because those all eventually ended up being entryways for hacking.
(This same type of cables come packaged with Pro Controllers)
Go to System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos > Copy to a Computer via USB Connection
The first amendment states that the government cannot impune one for speech against the government or government officials outside of slander/libel (the basis of hate speech BTW) or other potential crimes like incitement of violence (stochastic terrorism and the intent and outcome of hate speech).
No gubmint has ever or will ever support freedom of speech if it contains leftists. This could only exist in an america whete the democrap party gets baned
i think there are some mastodon instance owned by some countries in euroupe, although im not sure if any are publicly joinable but i guess that's the point of the fediverse
