  • In this video I go over the installation of a short throw shifter/ short shifter (Torque Solution) in my Nissan 350Z. I tend to always put an after market short throw shifter in my vehicles, because I'm always left wanting more as far as driver feel goes. This is probably because most factory vehicles have to be set up for ease and have to feel soft for the masses, also I tend to buy my vehicles used so there's probably a little bit of wear.
    Thus I change the part. I love the feel of a good quality shifter. The throws are the right distance, and you get this incredible positive feel when changing gears because the materials are higher quality and the tolerances are tighter.
    If you are on a budget and you don't know what to do to you car, change the shifter!

      Forgot to say the stick is stock still. Don't think anything was done to shifter but shifts in gears really easy only complaint clutch catches very high unlike my last car. My last car couch caught right away so a learner could drive it. I was able to be on a hill and use the clutch and gas to stay in gear still on a steep hill. Did it the day I got it. I wish this clutch was like that. It would help off the line big-time unless your a trackie and use 2 step. Btw my z is a track car but that part of my life is over. No racing the z for me no matter how much crap someone talks.

      Same one you got, those "clicks" when you were showing how tight it is something I want. haha. I also ordered a new plastic cup from Z1, apparently that's usually what wears out.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад

      frankth3frizz Ya I bought one too from there. You can't buy the cup alone from the dealer you have to get another shifter, so dumb. Plus you beat up the old one a bit trying to take it off. Make sure to put on some lithium grease in the cup or something safe for plastics.

      Hey those little spacers for the bolt doesnt seem to want to fit with both of them installed.do I need a lot of pressure to squeeze them in? There's about a millimeter gap between the actual shifter and the face of the spacer.

    can you do a follow up on this video? i see on your latest videos the shifter collar is no longer there and maybe you did something different with your boot. are you getting the vibrations without the sound deadening?

    • @AnthonyJ350

      William Ting I pushed the boot down around the base of the Torque Solution shifter. Reminded me of an old Ferrari shifter, that's why we did it.

    This was a VERY good and instructive video.. I'm thinking on this modification, my only problem is I live in a country where I would end up paying 3x the amount to import that piece + waiting months for it to arrive :/
    So, I was thinking.... the only (practical) difference between those shifters is the length at the bottom part.. So..... what if.... I cut it and add ~1 extra inch (the comparison at minute 5:33 was key, it's basically an extra head) of a stainless steel rod the same diameter as OEM, and weld it...throw a 1/2 inch spacer and... that should be it... just expecting not to have to change the shifter cup..
    I hope I'm not missing something else.. I will be thinking on this idea for some days before taking my shifter apart : )
    Please let me know what you think!
    PD: Reasons for modifying vs replacing it:
    - time that will take to arrive (customs is a bad joke where I live)
    - costs (shipping, taxes, customs, custom taxes [YES, more taxes])
    - I have all the needed tools + welder
    - as I was looking some reviews, quality of aftermarket short shifters is not the best even between expensive ones (300+ USD) and OEM one looks solid

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  Год назад

      Cutting it will make the throw shorter. But the Torque Solution unit is built to tighter tolerances and material. That's where the better feel comes from.

  • @soldiersinx
    @soldiersinx 8 лет назад +1

    Hey,
    Thanks for the great video! I was wondering, you said it was like the TWM shifter, does this one have something to dampen the vibrations like TWM does, it looks like it is just a solid unit. How is the buzzing/vibrations on this one? Thanks!

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад

      The big bulge dampens the vibration. Has the same vibration as stock but feels amazing to shift.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад

      +soldiersinx Also I have a weighted shift knob from Greddy, so that probably helps dampen the vibration a lot too.

    • @soldiersinx
      @soldiersinx 8 лет назад

      Hey Anthony,
      Thanks for the reply. I picked one up based on your review, but I am having issues with the installation. When I try to insert the stainless steel bushings, there is no clearance and it will not install. The part at 8:22 on your video. The bushings are just slightly larger where it will not insert into the shifter linkage. Did you have any problems like that? Thanks.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  8 лет назад

      soldiersinx Yup, it is extremely tight tolerances. You have to line it up perfectly for it to go in. I had a similar experience..

  • @jeremygalloway1348
    @jeremygalloway1348 2 года назад

    Anthony I've come across articles on internet contradicting each other regarding white lithium grease and plastics. Lol would think there'd be a general concensus. Some say WLG is fine for metal/metal and metal/plastic lubrication...others say WLG is not ideal for plastics due to accelerated aging. Weird. I know there are different plastics and would assume also WLG compounds...but still kinda weird. I did the same thing when I installed my nismo adjustable shifter in my 350.
    I'm reinstalling it now and am concerned with where the shifter goes into the tyranny linkage. Missing the plastic or nylon washers somehow. And just have some o rings in there. Dunno how that happened I guess broke and somehow fell out. I also have grime/dirt in the cup that I will clean out. Just not wanting to separate the ball and cup lol. Thinking of trying to find some type of washers to fill the gap where the plastic or nylon washers sandwich the shifter and linkage. Thoughts on washers? Think about soft metal would work or deform and cause issues(possibly into certain gears). Apparently it's worked fine as when I removed it they were absent and I've been driving for 6 years since install so no telling when they came out

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  2 года назад

      Used Dielectric grease if you want. It's used for oring seals. I had no issue with the grease used in the video. You can worry about it in 20 years from now.

      I looked it up. It looks like one piece construction so that's good. It says 60% reduced throw, I honestly think that's pretty short of a throw. Mine reduced it a little from factory and I thought it was perfect. I think the factory throw is pretty darn good just needs to be tightened up a bit.

    Can you tell me why sometimes its hard for me to put my shifter into gear, especially when i drive the hell out of it. Ill be driving my car normally than when i stop at a red light or stop sign i try to put my car in first gear and its like it wont go in that gear or any gear... i have to use all my might to force my shifter into gear...and btw i have a new transmission and clutch.

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  6 лет назад

      You might need to bleed the clutch hydraulic fluid again. If the clutch slave is old it may need to be replaced. Also did you install a stainless steel braided line with a heat shield? We use Redline Transmission fluid for Nissans and my car shifts great.

    • @Sanchees3
      @Sanchees3 5 лет назад +1

      I had the same issue as well after replacing my clutch and this worked for me: before you try to bleed the clutch or anything else, make sure the shifter plate is perfectly aligned. My 1st/5th/6th gears were becoming SUPER hard to shift into and I felt like I had to force it in very hard, but it turned out that my shifter plate (the gold plate that can be seen at 4:00 ) had been poor placed after my local shop recently replaced my clutch and removed the transmission. To fix this, just loosen all three 10mm bolts holding it down and make sure that the reverse lockout stem ( the little thing sticking out at 9:48 ) is touching the side of the shifter plate when in 5th and 6th gear. There should be absolutely NO GAP when in 5th and 6th gear, this ensures that you don’t overshoot when shifting or else you’ll grind it your gears by having to force them into the correct spot like you were mentioning. You may have to play with it at first when trying to find where the stick actually falls into the gears, but once you do just double check that the reverse lockout when in 5th and 6th is touching the side of the shifter plate.
      After re-aligning the plate you should have really smooth shifts again ! Hope this helped.
      Edit: Spelling

      @marcoscortes8745 Год назад

      @@AnthonyJ350I’m not sure I understand your question exactly. I don’t believe there was any slop anywhere, I virtually have to squeeze the shifter into the linkage point (without the spacers). I tried for a good while with them on and there was just no way unless I made the gap bigger. Everything installed fine after that, the shifts feel good, no issues yet. There is a minuscule amount of wiggle, barely enough to be noteworthy. I think it’s fine but I’m worried it might be an important part that’s slowly wearing things down
