The passion he put on cleaning and bringing back the life of an old laptop give's me 101% satisfaction and inspires me to be a laptop and desktop technician and help others to clean, repair and upgrade their laptops. Best thing to do go buy a very cheap old laptop from ebay that works get a cheap tool set of amazon for $25 and take the laptop apart clean it and just investigate take bits off or look part numbers up on Google to find out what they do . Then put it back together again if it breaks you learn from your mistake for next time think of it as a hobby instead of buying games or drinking spend the money on cheap stuff to take apart and mess about with . It's the best way to learn and the money you spend would have been going on non important stuff anyway so no big loss plus you learn a skill you can charge money for once you get better at it

    1. I like the way you work. You're a very clean and detail-oriented person, which is not easy to find amongst computer technicians.
    2. The list of GPUs should be named as "tested GPUs list", not "supported GPUs list" . In general, the adapter is, simply put, an external PCI-express connector. Therefore, in theory, any PCI board should work there. If something does not, most likely it's chipset or other reasons (like a NVIDIA eGPU on a AMD GPU laptop. Few systems allow that)
    I recently tested the amplifier with my 2015 15 R2 (i7 4720hq, AMD m390x) with a 5700XT and a 5700 and...it works just fine!!
    As well, I tested on my R3 2017 (i7 6700hq, GTX 1070) with the 5700XT, 5700 & a RTX 2080....and damn, I got some FPS bump there. 4K was perfectly playable in many games.
    My goal was to prove that older CPUs are NOT "old", as I really disapprove the way CPUs are marketed. Of course, it will NOT perform the same as recent CPUs and most likely bottleneck high-end GPUs, as you showed with the 2070, but that definitely does not mean one needs to upgrade their RIG/laptop thinking their CPU will simply not "support" the most recent GPUs as it is too old.
    Great video @Cat and Andrew!

  • @TheSpotify95
    @TheSpotify95 4 года назад +5

    This is one of the best restorations I've seen, great video, thanks for going through everything! It's good that this laptop can also have an external graphics card, not many laptops can do that!
    Also, I think I know why they used the exit sign in the battery: some couriers do not like shipping batteries (particularly overseas, if there wasn't any available in your country) so they put the battery in there and declared it as an exit sign, so it wouldn't be confiscated and/or destroyed in the shipping. At least you got a free exit sign (and yes I would have also turned it into a small portable light).

    Andrew with this video i want to let you know you helped by telling my about the heat pads on the gpu and CPU. they are really terrible things. they don't work at all. I have damaged my laptop back cover because of the cooling fan noise. this minute 10 minutes ago i changed my the pads with thermal paste and the fans are not kicking in so far. as i am writing this i got a game on Microsoft edge on and many background things. usually at this point my fans would be going crazy but no nothing is making any noise to annoy me. no turbo no over heating and the room temperature is about 30-40 degrees. i am very thankful about i this i don't have the right words to express how much this helped me personally. much much love for this brother. oh and loved the video. good one make more please and faster if possible :)

      Funny you should say that because I opened up my own HP Omen (2018 model?) today, the one with i7-8750H and 1050Ti GPU. It had way too much dust near the fan/heatsink fins, and the thermal paste had gone past its best. Temperatures already much lower, and with the latest software update there is also an Eco mode which limits performance in order to reduce temperatures. I may use that in future when this laptop is no longer required for gaming.

Amazing build quality also. Love these machines.

    • @freemaysin5088
      @freemaysin5088 2 года назад

      Yeah the build quality of this generation was Alienware's last of it
      I still have my AW13r2, same as in this video. Also have the gfx amp, with a 1080ti. Still going strong, never an issue (HD did fail, replaced with SSD)
      Recently bought a new M15 R5 Ryzen 9 + 3070 and it's a beast. Have 0 issues with it, but the build quality is not the same.
      If I had to put it into words, If i started walking up the steps, and dropping the laptops with each new step, this generation AW13r2 would last til like the 6th or 7th step, while the new M15 might not make it past 2.

    If only I also have the same skill sets like you, my Alienware 13 R3 won't be just sitting in a corner collecting dust lol
    Nevertheless, awesome video, earned a sub!

    Those thermal pads must be fore the memory chips Andrew someone saw it and added to the gpu to see if it fixes the issue I would put them back.

    I still have one of those external graphics devices - I brought it with my Alienware. My devices started failing like the speakers/mouse pad but it is my live streaming laptop and it has been running 24/7 365 days of the year. since I brought it. I use and external speaker and mouse

    I kind of wish the Exit Sign had been used as the replacement back panel. With Andrew's modding experience I can't imagine he would have struggled too much to do it.

    I've always wondered if you can use both GPUs (the 960M and the external one) at the same time so you can have a great boost and future proof for that laptop, is it possible, right?

      No you can't. The software will use the external gpu for gaming. Unless you do crypto mining then yes

    In the list they mention 1060 and 2070, but my 2060 Super although small isn't connecting. Not sure what else to try. The GPU is working as tested in a desktop. Maybe it's windows 11 being problematic.
