At the 8:38 mark…”What am I listening too?”…BTBAM answers “Between the Buried and Me!” Love the react man, give it more listens and go back in their discography and do more reacts on here as you journey through, you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for what your listening too.
If there's any band worthy of listening to their whole discography, it's between the buried and me. Their albums will grown on you, the compositions have much to dive into
Same here. In 2008, my friend showed me Prequel to the Sequel, and I thought it was awful. But I listened to the entire Colors album a few years later, then I went on a deep dive of their entire discography after that. Now they are my favorite band! Though, I will say, Automata II is probably my least favorite album they've released thus far, glad they kinda went back to their roots with Colors II.
Fell in love first time I heard them in 2002 but I was always into hardcore/progressive metal and mathcore. I’ve yet to hear an album from them i didn’t love.
Awesome reaction. BTBAM is like a puzzle that you have to solve through repetitive listens. Once you start to piece the puzzle together they become one of the most incredible and enjoyable bands to listen to, and you begin anticipating the genre changes.
BTBAM has been my favorite band for years, and even I feel confused the first time I hear a new album by them. Their music can be overwhelming, but also super rewarding if given time to sink in.
As I was watching, there were very few parts that you seemed not to have an instantly enjoyable reaction to. I think the issue is moreso with seeing how it all fits together, and that just come with future listens. I agree with you that their genre fusions can be jarring at first but the more you listen, the weirder you will want it to get, and also, the more cohesive it becomes as you notice the way it's all stitched together - the more parts stick out and cement their place in the album as well. Best regards and I hope you continue to delve into them because they can be musically life changing - I speak from experience. Don't blame you at all for being confused on first listen though. I felt the exact same way when I first heard them.
If I were you, I'd check out Colors 1, Parallax 2 or The Great Miadirect next. The self-titled, silent circus, and Alaska are much more metal focused but they are also incredible records. Starting from Alaska and moving forward is also a good option in my opinion. There's a lot of choices. As I said in the other comment, I envy you and kinda wish I could rediscover them again myself lol.
Can't wait to watch this later! Definitely check out the rest of their discography. Every single album is a uniquely incredible experience. Just off the bat, I feel like I should clarify that even the most ardent fans never know what to make of their albums on first listen. That's the journey. There's so much that you'll notice every time and it's really fun to pick it all apart with all of the references and easter eggs. It's definitely an acquired taste that's really, really worth acquiring. I'd maybe try out Colors 1 next to see where this album is coming from. I'll leave another comment when I watch this later. Based off of the thumbnail, and the question mark, I'm inclined to expect that the album may have left you bewildered and confused rather than overjoyed, and I get that completely. That's exactly the way I reaction to their music when I first heard it. The more you listen to them the more it seems to come together I think. It's also worth noting that each individual member's personalities come through super strongly in their music. They are goofy guys and their mindset when composing seems to largely be motivated by how fun they can make their compositions. I honestly envy you for all of the material you have in front of you whenever you should choose to check it. Their earlier albums are very mathcore/death metal oriented and they slowly began to weave in the progressive elements throughout their career.
At the 21:00 mark or so, those 4 back-to-back drum solos were performed by 4 different drummers: -Mike Portnoy (probably best known for his work with Dream Theater) -Navene Koperweis (formerly with Animals as Leaders, now with Machine Head) -Kenneth Schalk (I think he's best known for Candiria) and Blake Richardson, BTBAM's actual drummer. It's a cool idea and a cool thing to feature in the album.
They are a pretty experimental progressive metal group, but I believe this is their most experimental album release. Their most accessible album imo is Coma Ecleptic. I feel like it has their most clean vocals as well (Though I haven't sat and ingested Automata 1 and 2 recently, so I could be wrong). But it definitely feels lighter in comparison to their other work (has some heavy elements), and some of the synth music sounds could be weird. Colors 1 was HUGE at the time, so that wouldn't be a bad next listen after Colors 2. It's also pretty heavy though, as this was the album coming off of Alaska (which is an album that has a lot of metal core elements). If you want a little more groove in your heavy music, I think The Great Misdirect is a great next listen. Parallax 1 and 2 offers a very interesting story, and is similar to The Great MIsdirect in terms of musical approach. So, maybe Colors 1 next. Maybe Coma Ecleptic if you want their most accessible, but also light, progressive metal album. The Great Misdirect if you'd like to keep a healthy amount of heavy elements mixed in. If you like what you hear after 1-3 more albums, check out Parallax 1+2. But I don't know. Up to you. :)
I’m on listen 20-30 of this album including this video, and it’s ACTIVELY becoming more of a classic as I watch you try to comprehend what’s happening. I’m catching new guitar and drum sync ups I hadn’t noticed before and this guy’s losing his shit 🤣🤣
Totally agree with your statements around 40min in. I had to go through a ton of genres of music, loving various types of bands for a long time before being able to appreciate and love this band. They are very hard to get into and each album is def a ton to take in. Thanks for posting your reaction to my favorite band
Yep. It took years for Colors to finally click with me and now it's one of my favorite albums of all time. They are definitely not for average listeners.
I think Coma Ecliptic is the best starting point, as it is the most accessible record. I started with that album and they are one of my favourite bands now. As Obi-Wan once said: „You have taken the first step into a larger World“
I find this band for myself during the Alaska album... that shook me to the core... colors 1 came out 2 weeks later... completely shocked me.. never heard anything like it in my life... it literally changed what I expected out of music... untouchable by anyone other than themselves... immaculate

Respect!!! Love that you went through the whole album, that's awesome man. You should absolutely go through some of their other albums. BTBAM is a group that's very hard to get into. Seems like you appreciate the music, and I think you'd become a hardcore fan once you got deeper into it. New sub keep it up brother 🤙
Much like all the comments say, they aren’t a band that you listen to just one album and grasp what exactly it is they are doing to progress bands nowadays. For sure listen to coma ecliptic as it’s the most accessible album. I subscribed just to see you post more BTBAM album reacts. They will change your look on music. Stick with it! Haha They are my favorite band since middle school
Even as a huge fan, it takes a few concerted listens to finally start to be able to /listen/ to the album. Happens every time - listen a bunch of times, favorite tracks fall wayside to tracks I didn't initially like usually because they were super dense with ideas, then I just like to listen to the whole thing. Happens with Tool, and a lot of other prog bands (and to be clear, I did not like the album on first listen - though I did enjoy the 3 singles they released)
What kind of progressive metal do you listen to? This kind of dense, chaotic music is definitely an acquired taste. Once the vocals and rapid changes click, it becomes transcendental.
Also it's pretty normal you feel that way about listening for the first time a band like this one, it is too much information for one listen, but when you dive into the sound landscapes, the messages, the textures and melodies, they grow in you, and belive me, it becomes the greatest musical experience you can have, this kind of music always give you more and more, to the point it becomes almost divine.
I picked up Colors I right after it dropped, and listened s few times, and though it was pretty cool in parts, bug it didn't grab me at first. One long car trip later I said fuck it I'm doing it all...been a HUUUUGE fan boy ever since and they are a special band always to me! And live they are even better. It's unreal how good they are! Stick with it!
Give it a few more listens and you will be hooked :D I suggest their 2015 album "Coma Ecliptic" if you want something easier to listen to. It kind of has the same genre influences consistent throughout the entire album rather than varying per song and less left turns (although there still is some). The song structures are also generally easier to digest, especially on the first half of the album.
Adding this near the end of the reaction. I totally understand. You really never know what to get with these guys. If nothing else, take their storytelling of an entire album together, and the chaos of each individual song melding together to create something that they wanted to release as an artwork; maybe not an artwork you enjoy, but an artwork nonetheless. I think you mentioned that near the beginning. Maybe check out White Walls or Coma Ecliptic album, I feel that was more in line with things you would be more familiar with. If not, take it how many people take Meshuggah: great for the artistic expression, and that's all.
Reply to the reply: about those "extreme" parts you mentioned. For me it's the 'avante-garde' section of the band. I LOVE the extreme, crazy parts. Flamenco guitar? hell yeah. DnB in the middle of a breakdown? hell yeah. I understand that's not everyone's preference.
I have never enjoyed a reaction video so much. One second I see you head bang to their metal AF riffs, then your face melts to their solos, and suddenly you are completely surprised by a total change of tone and genre smiling the whole time.
I appreciate you giving them a try. Unfortunately coming back to BTBAM for repeated listens is a requirement to get into their albums. This one in particular I would recommend 3-5 full listens to even begin to appreciate. A lot of it sounds like randomness at first but once you piece it together and start memorizing parts for yourself, it becomes apparent that everything is there for a reason. They are the best at what they do in my opinion. I recommend going back to this multiple times. But either way, great video dude!
This is a really incredible album and has an insane amount of callbacks to Colors I (and a few other projects). Listen to the first 30 seconds of Foam Born (b): Decade of Statues from Colors I, then listen to the first 30 seconds of Double Helix again. And both tracks are extremely heavy tracks following a piano based intro that increases in intensity leading to the next song.
Got to do colors now, which came out 14 years earlier. I reckon it’s their best. They are a band that improve as you listen to them more. Too much to take in on first listen, this album especially. I haven’t got my head round it yet and I’ve listened to it a good few times.
Josiah: What is this?... BTBAM: Exactly ;) By the way, BTBAM can be, almost considered an Avantgarde Metal Band, that can be translated as experimental progressive death metal haha, here you have some other bands you could listen to: Unexpect (Album - Fables of the sleepless empire), Diablo Swing Orchestra (Album - all of them, they are amazing, but i recommend you to start with Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious), Pin Up Went Down (All of their albums), Vvon Dogma I (they only have one album), Native Construct (Album- Quiet World); Belive me all of this albums and bands are worth the listen, most of them master pieces.
47:00 Overwhelming is the word lol I would say you are better starting from the start and work your way to see how the band changed from album to album.
Love the instrumentation and the clean voice. The harsh vocals does still grate a bit for me after a while. Since you like the melodic breakdowns and proggy anthems, you might like bands such as Queensrÿche and Vanden Plas 😊
Look my guy, you went into the deep end with this band... This is their most intense and diversive album, highly recommend you listening to alaska, parallax future sequence 2 and colors, in order... Then you will understand more about the genesis of alot of the songs. Since they have similar structures to the musical beats! They are amazing :3 glad you enjoyed it!
Took me at least a full year of regularly exposing myself to this band before everything clicked into place. YMMV of course, but there is so much to integrate into the listening experience-and it takes effort. If anything appeals about it to you, it’s worth the effort!
No, I haven't yet. To be honest, I haven't been listening to music that much lately. But in the future, I will start to react to their Discography soon.
@@RUNTY_OW hell yeah that's awesome! It cool that you started with this album because it's basically an homage to their last 14 years of music since Colors 1. There's callbacks and references all over the place on this thing, it'll be interesting to see if you catch any of them
You're totally right, there is no band that sounds quite like BTBAM. This album is a successor to BTBAM's magnum opus in their original 'Colors' album. While the overall sound is a little different between the albums, a lot of the song structures are the same - with lots of genre-mixing thrown in there. Colors is also definitely worth a listen, but I get that not everyone is going to like the unpredictability of this band in general. Personally, I can't get enough of it. I love the unpredictability of it, I love the genre-mixing and I love the vast range of emotions the band makes me feel in a matter of minutes.
Literally any of their album will have such or similar effect on an unprepared listener. For a first listen, you are handling their music very well actually! =)
Btbam is what happens when you have a bunch of guys that have music degrees that then decide to become proficient in death metal and jump into prog. They’re masters at writing their style, I’ve been listening to them for 15 years and they never ever get old to me. Good to see someone react a whole album
I had very similar reactions when listening to BTBAM for the first time with their album Parallax II. I didn't get people's obsession with this band. Years later, after listening to lots of other music and finally returning to relisten, they've become one of my favorite bands. Definitely recommend checking out the rest of their discography (Parallax II is a favorite now!) Don't worry if it doesn't click for a while; you're not alone! But don't let it dissuade you from trying again in the future, as these guys are certainly among the best.
I've got a buddy who has convinced me to try every album by this band, I have not heard anything that I've liked. Just not into it, even listening through this with you I'm not into the new album. When it's good it's just okay and when they change it up dramatically its grating. Maybe it's just not for me. Have you heard Shrezzers self titled album? Highly recommended if you like R&B type singing with screams, and saxophone
@@evannicholson8379 sorry to reply 2 years later, did you become a high school girl after listening to that? Shrezzers kinda fell off for me since then anyway. I do like that new Currents album though 🔥

There's callbacks and references all over the place on this thing, it'll be interesting to see if you catch any of them
You need to go do some Protest the Hero listens... Another group with a fantastic discography
I need a compilation of every time you said “what?” 😂 Welcome to the coolest metal band ever

Him: What am I listening to?
Me: Yes.
The color morale- My devil in your eyes. Good album.
What kind of metal do they play?
YES
and that is why we love them
Listen to colors 1 if you like more brutality, it'll blow your socks off.
Btbam is what happens when you have a bunch of guys that have music degrees that then decide to become proficient in death metal and jump into prog. They’re masters at writing their style, I’ve been listening to them for 15 years and they never ever get old to me. Good to see someone react a whole album
Man I wish this wasnt your introduction to them. Their album Parallax 2 is one of the greatest prog metal concept albums of all time.
Subbed for this man, hope to see you check out more BTBAM
Start where I did... with silent circus, then self titled, then Alaska, then colors, then you should be hooked
Oh hi person who lived my exact BTBAM life haha. My friend had the Victory Records DVD that had their Mordecai video and it’s been my life since haha
The greatest band the world has ever seen... they ripped my heart away from Tool.... not an easy accomplishment...
Omg same, still love them equally!
Give to Ne Obliviscaris a shot, it maybe some cool stuff for you
check out Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora - Darkest Hour, super riffy / melodic death metal sound, love that album to death
Man you gotta do parallax 2
React to the first Kvelertak album!
I had very similar reactions when listening to BTBAM for the first time with their album Parallax II. I didn't get people's obsession with this band.
Years later, after listening to lots of other music and finally returning to relisten, they've become one of my favorite bands. Definitely recommend checking out the rest of their discography (Parallax II is a favorite now!)
Don't worry if it doesn't click for a while; you're not alone! But don't let it dissuade you from trying again in the future, as these guys are certainly among the best.
Masterpiece
Hope you react to the rest of vildhjartas singles!
You should’ve started with their cover album, then gone back to their 1st album, and listened to them in chronological order.
The Great Misdirect isn’t only their best, but it’s one of the best albums ever recorded for me.
Don't forget colors 1
Best album of the best progressive metal band.
1 word: Apex
So many great songs this year….
Listen to Aviana - Rage
100 % amazing one of the best songs this year

Are you from SoCal, bruh?
Dude doesn’t seem to like Novelty
I've got a buddy who has convinced me to try every album by this band, I have not heard anything that I've liked. Just not into it, even listening through this with you I'm not into the new album. When it's good it's just okay and when they change it up dramatically its grating. Maybe it's just not for me. Have you heard Shrezzers self titled album? Highly recommended if you like R&B type singing with screams, and saxophone
I feel like I should be an emo high school girl listening to that.
@@evannicholson8379 sorry to reply 2 years later, did you become a high school girl after listening to that? Shrezzers kinda fell off for me since then anyway. I do like that new Currents album though 🔥
