Will I be achieving this pattern if I use this method?

Cool. I assume that is the same as sl 1 f (assume f = forward!)

I'm learning how to knit, but every time I start a swatch, I end up adding stitches. I knit the first and last stitches. What am I doing wrong? I did watch one video that shows not to work the last stitch...

You could be splitting the wool when you start to knit that stitch that way you end up with extra stitches.
