I own and drive a 2016 500 E, I got it in 2019, and while it is true that it only has about 80-85 miles of range, I think you’re underselling how well that range can get you around Los Angeles where it was originally sold. I can get from one side of town to the other twice without too much trouble, meaning from the westside to the valley and back. 17 miles, 34 miles round-trip, so two days of work not just one.
Also, I think it’s hilarious that the “parcel shelf“ in the sample they have there is broken. That’s something that happens on a lot of these 500 vehicles, that’s kind of hilarious that they didn’t swap it out for this photo op.

I had a 2013 500e which was the first year for the EV version and it was the best of the compliance EV’s, but Fiat lost money on every sale, so they really didn’t want to sell them. Mine had been leased in California and then the dealer was bringing them up to Washington by the truckload and people were buying them as fast as they could get them out of the truck. It was a great commuting car. I think the furthest I ever drove it was 57 miles to the airport. The airport had 50 outlets in the parking garage, the car was full when I came back.
I put 20k miles on it before I decided I wanted a car with fast charging and sold it.
They have become kind of cult favorites because I paid $6500 for mine in 2017 and I doubt they could be found for that now.
At the time I wished that it had fast charging and 150 miles of range. That’s not really enough for a long trip, but for me a trip to downtown Seattle was almost 50 miles, so I pretty much plugged it in anywhere I went.
With the seats down I could fit my folding e-bike in back and I could easily park in spots where pickup trucks couldn’t

There is Gruber Motors and Electrified Garage that Rich Rebuilds owns with multiple locations, but there are a number that I don’t know the names of. I was listening to an interview with one guy in the south suburbs of Seattle just a few days ago.
There are probably aren’t enough considering the number of older cars that will be having original batteries die. However it’s also a limited issue because newer batteries are meant to last a million miles compared to the early 2010’s cars which die after 10-15 years.
The 2013-2019 Fiat might not have a aftermarket battery replacement like the first Leaf’s did. Fiat made it fairly clear they didn’t want to sell those cars and only made them because California wouldn’t let them sell pickup trucks otherwise.

Anyone that thinks that a good value for that car has some mental issue! There’s no way that car is worth $32k and only gives 149 miles. You can get a Chevrolet bolt for $26,500 same size if not bigger gives you 259 miles or you can step up to the bolt EUV that’s definitely bigger then that fiat for $27,800 and gives you 247 miles of range. Stelantis products are complete garage!

Now I saw a European 500e Abarth is on sale in the UK. Any chance of it coming here?

I like the product but for one thing - over the air updates. Thus means the potential to remotely brick the car. If they can prove the ECU/ECM can’t be remotely touched (almost impossible) then I’d consider it. The price isn’t really that bad at a 5 year amortization.

I've driven a 2018 500e for about two and a half years now. I had to stop watching this video. The 1st generation 500e was introduced in 2013, not "2015-ish" (I'm looking at a 2013 on CARFAX as I type) and had a battery pack running the entire underside of the vehicle, not "just in the back". Many of the reviews of the 1st gen 500e said it handled better than the ICE version because of the battery placement and low center of gravity. How is the head of Fiat NA so wrong about their own car?

Old one kinda sucked, new one kinda sucks. I'd rather have the F56 MINI SE. 114mi vs 149mi isn't a huge difference, at least have it be well built and not so slow. You can get those pretty cheap used or heavily discounted on lease. Classy little thing instead of whatever 500e is trying to do.
I am also salty because at the time of the original 500e (then FCA) didn't care about it, want to service, or maintain these things. It had DCFC in mules, removed before launch. Infotainment was trash, plagued with dead modules. Their app and telematics literally had a 3 year time limit with no option to renew. It used a bespoke CAN system that made any kind of diagnostic temperamental. Repair parts were insanely expensive. It was also built like the after thought compliance EV it was. Not the kind of company I'd give money to twice.

Well I have a 2014 500e with 80,000 miles and other than a wheel bearing it’s been nearly perfect in terms of reliability. The Bosch designed battery is over 10 years old now and still doing great with minimal range lost so I say they did a good job with the old model. Not many EV’s can say the same. Hopefully the same will be true for this new one.
