Glad you're finally able to get some rest. Regarding your blueberries: Pick and just throw in a freezer bag. Keep adding to it, if you can't eat enough fresh and don't want them to spoil.. The frozen berries are perfect for hand pies or regular pies. Especially when temps get cooler. I DO mind sharing them with the birds!

For the mouse issue, mix baking soda, corn meal and cocoa powder together. Leave it near the plants, they will eat it, and explode as they cannot burp or fart out the gas that builds up within their stomach's.

I came across your account through the Exploring Alternatives account and what a JOY it was to find you. I sadly don't have access to a garden due to living in an apartment building but I'm hoping to be able to grow even small little things in pots in my apartment. I love watching homesteading videos but so many of them are vast spaces, seeing your bountiful garden in a space that's not absolutely huge is an inspiration to me 💛

Hi Asia. ..Good to see that you are getting a break from the overtime. I heard U speaking 2day about not having straw down yet. I know U're OK with risking being affected by bad hay straw. (We too used to buy it from Tractor Supply.)But why risk contaminating your soil and not being able to plant for years and years and years. Why not do what we've done and switch to Pine straw. Just for your consideration. It Will Not make your soil acidic. There would have to be years and years of accumulation and breaking down of the pine straw for your soil to be changed to acidic; and zero risk of being affected by Grazon. If you do decide to stick with the hay...test it first. Wet it down, dig some holes in top, place some soil in...pop in a few tomato plants, wet them and you will know in less than 2 weeks if the hay was sprayed with Grazon. Those plants will be on their way out. And you will know it! It won't look anything like transplant shock; and you'll only be out of that money instead of your entire garden space...for years. We did that last year and we're so happy we did. That hay was terrible. (And..full disclosure, that was not purchased hay..but hay we grabbed from a curbside after that prior halloween and kept until last spring. So we don't know where that came from. But again, why risk it. The consequences can be too dire.)

I grew candy cane zinnias this year too! Zinnias are my favorite to grow. It gets so hot here and they don’t mind. We bought one of those white feed cans that seals from tractor supply and it works great and bugs don’t get in it either. The birds have been in my garden a lot this year! It’s been fantastic, they’re eating bugs not my food. I keep two bird baths full of water for them. I also have a cardinal nest in one of my arch trellises and a nest in my greenstalk. 😂 your garden looks beautiful!

I throw berries (and tomatoes) in the freezer until I have enough to process for jam or tomato sauce. Sometimes you get too much to eat fresh but not enough to can. I can't tell the difference between fresh and frozen in jams or sauces. I freeze in a single layer on a sheet pan and then store in a plastic bag.

Our gardens are an ecosystem! Not only does it feed us, it feeds other living things!
If garter snakes are in your garden, it's because their food source is there! I'm not a fan of snakes but I understand that they take care of the critters I don't like (voles, mice, chipmunks, shrews, etc.).
They may now be drawn to your garden! Please don't drive them away. They will get out of your way faster than you will get out of their way!
