  • Why Spain Is Building A $25 Billion Undersea Tunnel To Africa
The stretch of water separating Europe and Africa is just 13 kilometers (8 miles) at its narrowest point, and in clear weather the people of the Spanish and Moroccan coasts can see the opposite coast. the idea to connect both states and continents with a bridge or tunnel has been in the air for a very long time, yet for some reason, it never saw the light of day. But recently, Spain and Morocco came together to renew plans for this megaproject. The region may soon see change due to the upcoming 2030 World Football Championship set to be hosted in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Anticipation surrounding this global tournament has renewed interest in the ambitious project. Today we will explore more about the plan to connect Africa and Europe by rail.

I can’t help but think that the geopolitical status in North Africa would hinder its viability. Also more alarmingly it would be a terrorist target and also a passage for more illegal migrants wishing to move to Europe. While it would be amazing to go by train from London to Cape Town I just don’t think it is currently feasible or warranted.

They would take more than five years to build it! Builders always go over budget & over timeline because they bid for jobs & the fastest bid generally gets the job. Transportation across the Straight is already heavy. This strikes me as a despotiic-leader-type ego trip, on the backs of tax payers, more than anything practical.

About the connection from the tunnel to Algeria, Tunisia and Libya :
The Algeria-Morocco border is closed since 1994, completely, even for pedestrians, so traffic through the tunnel to these countries can be ignored.

  • @ikmarchini
    @ikmarchini 2 дня назад +1

Nice video but please try to match your visuals to your info. You keep showing car traffic in a tunnel when this will not be the case. Like the Chunnel, cars would be loaded onto a train for portage. And the illustration at 7:03 is very interesting as it suggests the allignment would follow a particular substrata of the geology. Why? BTW, the interests of Algeria, Libya, et al, are immaterial, as they are barely speaking. Tunis is 2000km from Tangier, and Mauritania might as well be on the moon, developmentally.

Having a tunnel under the sea would be challenging in terms of technology and cost. Technology can be made available but cost viability can't be attained. So over the sea bridge (say cable stayed) would be a viable option in terms of technology and cost. It will need less time, energy and cost to construct compared to an under sea tunnel.

Not in that time frame .
Tunnel borers are not 'off the shelf ' items , need 6 at least .
Need places for all the workers and equipment .
That said , borers will meet in the middle , so say 7 kms from each side , over say 3 years , is about 7 m / day . Could drill that in a day .
Sure the borers line the tunnel , at what cost ? Could have crews for the drillers .
Done my share of deep level drill and blast :-) Guided by the geologists . Have more knowledge and equipment today .
And you get to start almost straight away , no waiting for all the borers to arrive on site :-)
    Economically viable ?
What are the ferries charging , would be faster by tunnel .
    At a conservative $25 billion , over 25 years , $1b / year . Inflation excluded .
Plenty of time for the local hubs to get organised :-)

Never happen. The established intermodal facilities (ship, air, ferry, etc.) appear to be sufficient to handle the load. Spending all this money because of a sports event would be a huge mistake. Envision, if you will, the tunnel being a huge success during the sports event and them after the event is over, the traffic load drops significantly. Where are the funds going to come from to maintain the tunnel. Loss of revenue from facilities built to support world's fairs after the fair attendees have gone home are common. The boosters of the facility are stuck trying to find revenue. In this case a lack of suitable transportation modes is not there. If more modes of transportation are needed in the future, additional ships and airplanes cam be added. It's not like the world is constrained by a traffic jam crossing the Mediterranean.

This is a TOTAL NON STARTER The MINIMUM DEPTHS of the Strait is over 1,000 feet or 300 meters Deeper by an order of magnitude than any other undersea tunnel on earth. A hole in the tunnel would result in a water jet with the power to cut armor plate, making any construction suffer catastrophic failure no matter how small the problem. At the location of this 'shallow' water is a mega ton water current moving at several km an hour. Trying to anchor anything to the bottom would require mega engineeiring as never envisioned on earth by submersibles that rival nuclear ballistic missile subs. As this info is available from Google in 15 mins the poster of this piece is a click bait artist at best. As to what the nations agreed to, who knows, I Have a life, I'm not looking it up, probably to see what means will be feasible for the world cup to move people, and the answer is...... SHIPS. Just book a couple dozen cruise ships to ferry people back and forth. Build some docks that can be repurposed as bases for housing, fish farms or something after the meet.

And China would only ask for authorization to build a “strait-adjacent” naval base in Morocco. China would also be happy to provide financing on the condition that they be allowed to bring in Chinese labor to build it, and then take ownership of it when it becomes financially unviable for the Spanish and Moroccans to repay the Chinese loans. 😂

I mean, you're thinking it'll cost $23B, (shy of 5 reactors) Elon may have just earned another $40-50B and has his own boring company. Seeing how the US sent $40B to Ukraine in one year. I don't suppose the undertaking costs are monumental, along with having the both connected would allow for a much better route for Morrocco and Europe. I'd get it cleared for infrastrucure "roads" on either side. Economic impact: coastal property values will dramatically increase for Morrocco making millionaires in 15 years while most of Morrocco will continue to see trillions of dollars go across the mediterranean every year. It's not that Spain does more than 1.5T GDP than that it provides not much more than high end coastal real estate for people. Let's say the construction workers are paid 45/hr with excellent benefits which would allow them to buy into. Our US Congress belly aches on 8 miles of land ownership 'because' they'd go there first, back to the' Israel since 1900 for what? 800 millionaires? I really have to worry how lexan, carbon fiber or other materials are in greater vast than 23miles.

Considering the climate shift to more heat, which equals more extremely bad weather, this is the alternative to planes that can't fly every day and ships hit with unprecidented storm surges over the next two decades. Shipping will continue unabated this way. Nice save!
