  • France Is Building A $28 Billion Tunnel To Italy Through The Alps - Turin Lyon Railway
France and Italy rank as each other's second-largest trading partners, with trade between them amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Thus, establishing a high-quality transport link is economically vital. However, the Alps Mountain range, stretching across the entire Franco-Italian border and reaching elevations of up to 3 miles above sea level, poses a significant challenge to achieving this transport goal. But in a bold endeavour to connect the two nations, France and Italy are now undertaking the construction of a $28 billion railway through the Alps. Today, we will explore the new Turin-Lyon Railway, examining the scope of its construction, its distinctive features, and its positive and negative impacts.

It is France AND Italy together that build the tunnel, not only France. The Swiss have done this on their own some years ago with the Gotthard tunnel of 55 km.

And the Austrians are actually building two long base tunnels, the Semmering Base Tunnel (all in Austria) and the Brenner Base Tunnel (Austria and Italy joint project). Both should be complete just after 2030.

Besides the money that France pays into the EU, according to the information in this video Italy is paying more than France, so it might be better to say that Italy or the EU is building the tunnel.

@@ivanoffw Americans learn about metric units in school. Products in US stores are marked in metric and American units for tens of years already.
So we need to push them slightly to start using these units.

Only for the main 57,4 km tunnel. France has far more construction to complete than Italy for the entire project., so overall, France will be spending significantly more.

I’m curious where exactly this railway will go. I often think railway should be used for the goods transport. As it’s right now European motorways are taken over by trucks . I look forward . A month ago we were driving from Turin🇮🇹 to Swiss town of Montreux and there is unfortunately no railway there . Would be nice to connect the railway to Switzerland too …

Not concerned with CO2 emissions but greater efficiency and convenience is to be applauded. Am amazed the EU is putting up 40% of the cost. Seems a high contribution when the marginal benefit to other countries will not be that large?

  • @ivanoffw

I am going to go out on a limb here, but my guess is that many of the groups against the project are funded by the auto, trucking, and airline industries, maybe with a few Alps towns worried about fewer travelers stopping in their towns.

Kinda odd that MTA subway train footage is used in this vid on a tunnel between Turin, Italy and Lyon, France. Just wondering where the criticism against this project originated? Whilst driving through this region several years ago, the constant line of trucks passing through small alpine villages and towns was also lined with by the side of the road monuments for locals who became victims of this traffic. In the meantime the traffic in this area has significantly increased. When this line will finally be open, it will have a significant impact on this transalpine traffic. Provided of course that piggyback transport becomes the standard. Cheerio

The indicated budget is only for the main tunnel. France will be building an additional 140 km of tracks, including 86 km of tunnels. Italy will build an additional 48 km of tracks including 38 km of tunnels. As France will be spending significantly more to link to the main tunnel than Italy, Italy is paying a larger share of the main tunnel. The entire project is 271 km long, with about 180 km of tunnels.

Mountain heights in miles? Come on! International units please! And when you speak about a project in Europe in miles and feet nobody understands it. You should speak in kilometers and meters and for the Americans add the miles or feet in the subtext.

As far as I know, the railway tunnel is only for high-speed trains between major cities. So not for freight or local train networks. Therefore I consider 28 B$ to be an economic nonsense

We need to modernize the railways, but that won't take trucks off the road.
Il faut bien moderniser les voies ferrées, mais ça n'enlèvera pas les camions de la route.

    • @philv3941
      @philv3941 28 дней назад +3
