The Piasecki H-16 Transporter was a tandem-rotor transport or rescue helicopter designed by Frank Piasecki and built by Piasecki Helicopter initially as the PV-15.

Was always surprised that the crash caused by test equipment would cause the cancellation of what appeared to be an excellent aircraft

This pattern happens too often with these aircraft for it to be coincidence. Valkyrie, Helostat, Macon, Akron, Apollo 1, Hindenburg. Almost all had excellent records and flight hours and suddenly boom catastrophic failure.

My uncle Harold Peterson and George Callaghan were killed in the return test flight and all development was scraped.

It is giant. Imagine if we actually put it into service. Forget bridge laying vehicles, just chopper in someone else's bridge.
