  • The Piasecki HUP-1 Retriever was tested by the U.S. Navy at Lakehurst, New Jersey in these color films possibly from 1949. It is one of 32 delivered with canted stabilizer fins, deleted on subsequent models. HUPs of all models totaled 339 helicopters for U.S. and allied countries.
Power was supplied by a single Continental R-975 engine delivering 525 or 550 horsepower, depending on model. By folding the copilot's seat forward, access was made to a hatch from which an electric winch could hoist up to 400 pounds.
The Navy used the HUP series for plane guard recovery duties aboard aircraft carriers, as well as utility duties -- hence the letter "U" for utility in the designation. The U.S. Army flew these helicopters as the H-25 Army Mule. Some of these Piasecki helicopters entered the U.S. civil aviation market.

Another great video. I remember the helicopter, but I don't think I ever saw any pictures of it with the fins until now. Thanks again for all you do and as always God bless you and yours! 😊🇺🇸👍

Thanks! I was stationed at Niagara Falls Airport for many years and never knew the USNavy had an aviation facility there. You can clearly see the NY ANG Sabers on the north side of the field.

I like the hoisting of the dummy aboard. Was there room for cargo behind the pilot or passengers? You are having to much fun finding these old films. Thanks

My dad crashed landed in one in the sand in Rhode Island. Engine went out. They were stuck there over night because of the weather. And it was February. He told me he froze his butt off. He was stationed on the "Texas Towers". 4 oil platforms used as early warning for the Russians. There were 4 of them. My dad was on #4. They all complained about it being wobbly and the air force ignored the men. My dad was on it for 12 months. When he left, literally a day later, it collapsed in a storm killing 27. They only found my dad's platoon Sgt. The air force tried to cover it up. The story of it is on the history channel. The things you learn.

In this video, it looks like the pilot had to run the winch too. Talk about multi tasking!

The two parked at Pendleton Oregon, were there for years . Don't know what happened to them. Some ag operator owned them but found out they were a bit unsuited for ag work.

With this music I feel like I'm in a 60s nightclub waiting for Sean Connery to show up with a martini .

Did the cameraman comb his hair over the open film gate? Sheesh! 😂
