- Tom Cruise addresses rumors that he almost played Iron Man for the MCU before Robert Downey Jr. was cast in the role. This interview took place at CinemaCon ahead of Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Can you imagine Tom Cruise as one of the Avengers or as Superior Iron Man from another universe in the Multiverse Saga to fight Kang?

This is part of why he’s so successful. He sees the business of what he’s doing. He knows that even though he could do great at the part, that it would still be stepping on someone else’s shadow instead of being his own thing.

Tom Cruise in the MCU feels like it'd be so weird - and I like him and his movies quite a bit.
I was always hoping that in a Spiderman movie we'd see a picture of Marisa Tomei and Tom Cruise on the wall with Peter Parker looking at it and saying a line of dialogue, "Happy birthday Uncle Ben," or something like that. I just thought it'd be funny to make the biggest movie star in the world a regular guy who died offscreen before the movie even started. And if Aunt May's gonna be as hot as Marisa Tomei, Uncle Ben needs to be an actor of similar age and hotness.
I concur, he's better than the MCU. If anything, I'd like to see him in a DCEU project, something with a very dark & heavy tone.

I live in Argentina and I distinctively remember a Marvel comic from around 2005 that said an Iron Man movie was in the works and that it would star Tom Cruise. I'm sure it's still at my father's home. I believe it was Marvel Ultimate Team-up (Spider Man & Iron Man).

RDJ as Iron Man is so iconic that I can't separate his performance from the character. Having said that, I do think Tom Cruise would have done a good job and been successful. He probably wouldn't have wanted to sign up for as many as RDJ ended up being in though.
