    People in Seattle are very friendly, they just don’t want to be your friend.

    It's one thing to not chat in elevators. I didn't do that in any of the cities I lived in. But where Seattle really stands out (in a bad way) is the cliques. People form a small group, usually 2-3 people, and they never allow anyone else into that circle. You'll never be invited to hang out with them, and people will often literally rather stay at home by themselves than even entertain the idea of socializing with somebody they don't already know.

    The "Freeze effect" is not just limited to Seattle. I lived in a few Canadian cities and I feel like the "Freeze" effect is just a consequence of globalization. Whats the point in going out of your way to make a friend in a big city... when they're just gonna move back home/moved across the globe/move to a new city in a few months.
    Prior to this we lived in small communities and made friends with the tribe that would last a lifetime. As a result of globalization, we're free to move around as much as we want... but it comes at a price.

    This Seattle Freeze is very real. Otherwise why does everyone mention it. I just moved out here a couple days ago frim Las Vegas, and I totally see what people mean. The people here are too serious. I dont like small talk myself but they dont even smile or greet you over here. I'm introverted myself too but not this much. Geez. There are some exceptions. Some people are different but overall the people here are so cold. They don't even look at you. No disrespect, it's just that i noticed it too. Hey Seattle, why so serious?

    You can make friends. Your friendships will not be at your house though. They will be at a bar or restaurant and when you run out of money you won’t be accepted because you can’t afford to do anything. Also your friends will cancel last minute through text, passive aggressively deal with conflict and not mean what they say when they suggest any sort of future commitment. Coming from a native that actually has done these things and learned how from growing up in the area. Didn’t realize it was not normal until I went to other states.

    As someone from the UK this is pretty much the norm even in " friendlier" parts talking to a stranger yet alone making eye contact especially in closed spaces . Big no no 🙃.
    I don't think most Americains realise how friendly they are to be honest. Ot can be a bit of a shock to visitors outside the US
    PS If you are ever in London don't ever talk on public transport.

    I mean for me when I visited Seattle they were actually nice. And they're willing to help you out. But they are a little bit anti social. Then again I'm from the south (grew up in West Virginia and Tennessee). Appalacian culture is completely different. I'm used to people knocking on your door as a new neighbor and them feeding you an entire meal when you visit them. Using the words honey and sweetie. Seattle is a completely different world then what I grew up knowing. But I've only visited there once. I enjoyed every second of it though. I love Seattle. I did have one person in seattle grt mad at me for calling her hun. Like maam im from the south i call everyone hun. 😂

      NYC has a bad rep because of the "don't waste my time" attitude everyone has when they're commuting lol. But Seattle takes it too far, in that nobody will want to be your friend no matter what the situation is.

      @@TiffanyWestNyc Why will you regret it? Are the people in Seattle too friendly or not friendly enough? I'm curious because I never heard of the "Seattle freeze" until today and the notion that any city (much less a west coast city) might be considered less friendly than New York is pretty shocking.

  • @Eli_._Sage1
    @Eli_._Sage1 2 года назад +4

    Wow what a complete waste of a project on a very real social issue. It’s relatively simple. The gloomy weather drives Seattleites to spend the majority of each year indoors in relative isolation. As such, people tend to become out of practice with their social skills. Isolation becomes the comfort zone, and so socializing then feels uncomfortable and awkward. Combine that with social media and other technologies that cause antisocial behaviors, and you’ve got a multifaceted issue that makes it incredibly difficult to form meaningful relationships with other people.
