Great video as always. I started my A320 type rating in April and since then your videos were teaching and motivating me going further with my training. 2 days ago I flew base training, it's amazing feeling. Thank you for being an inspiration and great source of knowledge and fun Captain!
Congratulations and all the best to you for your flying career. It's great to hear that the videos helped you during your training. I am looking forward meeting you on the flight deck!

Thanks for watching and your friendly words! This is a special company approach. It overlays the published instrument approach and the required visual part at the end.
Now my week is complete! Thanks Captain, as always! Beautiful approach and a job well done by your F/O! I love watching you be pilot flying, but I must say I think I enjoy these moments where you monitor a tiny bit more, like in this video. I do get the feeling, that you're the teacher in this cockpit, and I loved it when you got a little excited for the great approach and landing of your F/O :D If I could have had you as a teacher in any subject back in school, my grades would've looked a little better ;) Anyways, thank you again Sir and have a great weekend!
Thanks for watching and your very good and detailed feedback! This approach was special because it was a very short visual approach with additional guidance from the flight directors. As it is all happening very fast, the pilot monitoring has to make sure that the setup for the approach and the guidance is right and inform the pilot flying in accordance. The pilot flying has to use the outside views as main reference with support from the flight director.
Very interesting approach, it's all so fast and you have done a great and accurate job. I'm a little afraid of flying, I try to avoid going to airports without ILS ! Also the ending with the walk around while you are discussing the flight is a novelty appreciated ! Keep sharing your videos, Captain!!!
Thank you so much for the good and helpful feedback! You do not need to be afraid of flying and there is no need to avoid airports without an ILS. A VOR or RNAV approach is also a safe maneuver. We are trained to do that and have no problems flying it. Especially in Greece, Spain, Italy .... we also fly visual approaches if weather and traffic permits it.
I've been waiting for a good flight deck view of the Santorini 33 approach! I was there in 2019, flew in on a Thomas Cook A321 and the view from the cabin was superb, but the flight deck is way better!
Hello Cpt. A beautiful visual approach video. 🤩👍 I think Santorini is an interesting airport, isn't it? Again great video and view from the cockpit is awesome. What I really, really liked are the pictures of the plane and the cabin. The outside view of the plane is also great for me! If I'm not mistaken, you're doing the outside check right now, aren't you? I'm looking forward to the next video again. With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week! Greetings from Styria 🤗 Werner
Werner, thanks for watching and your great feedback! Yes, we do an outside check before every flight. We arrived early in Santorini. This gave us a little more time on the ground than usually. Best greetings to Styria! Have a wonderful week!
Hey I love your videos cap! I would like to ask you, I am a greek resident living near athens international airport and I have my own air band receiver to listen to ATC. I often hear this weird repeatitive noise on frequency, exactly like the one at 7:46. Its really distracting and it always blocks transmissions. Do you know what it is? Is it normal?
Thanks for watching, the good feedback and your suggestion! I will continue like before: Some approaches will be shown completely, including the briefing. Other approaches may be shown without a briefing and the recording starts sometime later in the approach. The next planned video will include the briefing and most of the descent. Please stay tuned!
Fantastic visual approach and landing! Really enjoy these videos, you and whoever you fly with are always so professional and diligent Captain; you’re a real credit to aviation
Thanks for the good feedback! The charts are from Lido (Lufthansa Systems). The VOR 15 circling 33 is a CFO approach which was designed by Lido on request of the airline. It contains the standard VOR 15 approach combined with a circling maneuver to runway 33. This can be flown down to the runway like any standard RNP approach.
The A320 NEO is silent and the stability is good enough I think so but again eagerly waiting for your video Captain sir❤❤❤.... have crush on A320 ❤❤❤❤❤ from childhood....Again nice approach and Salute Captain sir🧑🏻✈️✈️✈️🧑🏻✈️🙏🏻🇮🇳
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! Yes, the plane needs less fuel and emissions are also significantly reduced! I do not know about the profit. But I know that the A320 NEO is more expensive than the CEO. So the additional price may take away some or all of the saved money.
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! No, it was not rehearsed! I was very surprised about the dual action as I watched the raw video material and could not resist including it in the final video.
Guten Morgen!
Another great video. Nice seeing a visual with Final APP. I think you used that at Funchal RW05. Just wondered, do you always release brakes when chocks are on? 👍👍
Thanks for watching, the good feedback and your question! Yes, whenever possible we release the brake. This is better for the longevity of the brakes. Also the plane would be ready for towing by the maintenance crew.
Very nice !!!!!!! I don't speak very well english...... What is saying the first officer at 8:45 ? ........ available ? "and APU is available" ? am i wrong ?
Hello captain, nice landscape and perfect landing as always with you, but what was that sound at 6:17 and when the countdown was 30 feet, it was the same sound when autopilot is off, thank you in advance
Thanks for the good feedback! I agree: He did a perfect landing! After leaving 80 feet on the radar altimeter, you can see on the FMA that the approach mode was cancelled automatically and the FMA shows now Vertical Speed and Heading. The mode change is white boxed in the FMA display. In addition, the triple click alerts the pilots about the change.
Beautiful approach and he did a great landing! I noticed the seats at the exit row say "more legroom" but not "you must be willing and able to open the exit door to sit here". 🤔 I was wondering.. with those side sticks, is the FM's input disabled so you don't bump it the wrong way by accident while pushing the button to talk on the radio?
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! I agree, the First Officer did a great landing! There are also seats with more legroom and no emergency exit. You are right, if you are seated at the emergency exit, you must be willing and able to open the exit. The flight attendants would tell you about it and give you instructions. If somebody does not want to sit there, he or she will get another seat. The sidestick inputs are added. If one pilot steers to the right and the other to the left, the plane will fly straight ahead. No, we won't do any stick input accidently when using the push to talk button at the sidestick.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Wow.. great answer! As far as the sidesticks, you said the plane will fly straight if it gets conflicting inputs.. what if you're landing? I'm wondering.. if one of you passed out and accidentally kept pushing on the stick, how do you handle that situation if you're PM? A switch to shut off their input? I'm assuming they don't move in unison like a yoke does.
Good question! The general rule is that only one pilot makes the inputs. If both would make an input, they would be added to each other. If one pilot is incapacitated, the other pilot can take over the controls with a so called "takeover pushbutton". If one pilot pushes this pushbutton, it deactivates the sidestick of the other pilot.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos New planes are so sophisticated.. but they sure won't be flying themselves until a very long time after you've driven through the retirement fire hoses. I had the privilege of being on a couple of those flights.. pilots are the best!
Great video Stefan! I think once you were on the ground, the ATC audio was fuzzy. I had to turn my volume down! Is this an instance where the line could be blocked if you can’t understand correctly? My next question is: when your FO asked the ground frequency to repeat the stand number I think it was, how often can this be repeated? For example, if the line is still blocked or you can’t understand sometimes. I was plane spotting at Gatwick about 2 and half weeks ago and I saw 2 planes do an aborted landing because there was a plane on the runway that didn’t leave the runway quickly I think. At Gatwick they have 2 runways but only use 1, but if 1 is out of use due to maintenance or emergencies I think, they can use the other runway. Final question: How often can this happen at any airport and is it quite scary for some? I’ve never experienced it.
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! Sometimes it is difficult to understand ATC. The cause must not be the ATC controller. It also could be a problem with a radio in the airplane or the transmitter of the ATC facility. Or that we were listening to another frequency in parallel. If we do not understand or do not get the full message, we always ask. Most of the time, one "say again" call is enough to understand everything. But in general, we have to ask as often as needed to understand the message. I also heard pilots saying something like "please say again slowly" ... Dusseldorf in Germany also has two runways. Due to political reasons, they are only allowed to use both runways for a fixed amount of hours every week. At other times, only one runway is available. This produces sometimes unneeded delays on the ground and in the air (additional flight time due to the traffic). In case of emergencies, maintenance or other issues, the secondary runway may be used as backup for the main runway.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos That's really interesting. The same happened to me when I was also at Southampton Airport about a month ago. Where my radio was listening to the tower but there was some bits where I was listening to the ATIS. OK - so rather similar to what happens at Dusseldorf as well as Gatwick.
Great flight crew and as always a very nice video to watch. As I checked my chartsystem however I wasn‘t able to find the visual chart to rwy15. I believe this is some kind of LIDO-thing that you’re being provided with a visual approach chart? Technically it pretty much reflects the standard visual circling pattern published for example by airbus? Following the FCOM however it states that a visual approach should be flown with bird on and FD/AP off. Wouldn’t this then be more similar to flying an RNAV approach, regarding flight path given by the FMC and the FINAL APP mode?
All the used charts are shown at the end of the video. Lido produces also charts and FMS data sets for customers on their request. We were cleared for a visual approach and used as additional guidance the final part of the FMS overlay approach. On the navigation display, you see that we selected the RNAV 33-C. The FMS overlay approach has to be flown like an RNAV approach with flightdirectors on and with autopilot off or on. For landing, the autopilot has to be switched off. The FCOM procedures for a visual approach without any guidance are - for sure - different.
Thanks for watching and your question! With the A320 family, our wingspan is less than 36 meters. All the airports we fly to can accommodate that. But some of the smaller airports have also taxiways and areas which we cannot use because of our wingspan. Sometimes we have to do a backtrack on the runway instead of using a too tiny taxiway.
Nice approach! I have to try that one, and learn to use the final app feature you did here. What's the functionality of the lower left panel beneath the cockpit door lock panel in the pedestal? Cannot recognise that one from the simulator I use.
Thank you for the good feedback! The mentioned panel is the data loading system which is used by the maintenance crew to upload new data into the airplane systems.
Mal wieder tolles Video, vielen Dank fürs teilen!
They do not have an ILS at Santorini airport. It was a visual approach. Additional guidance was available from an RNAV overlay of the VOR approach with circle to land maneuver. Greetings to Singapore!
Question. Why you always leave the engines running for one minute after parking? Does it have to do with static electricity and ground or something else?
Good question. The engines are in need of a 3 minute cooldown time. Without the 3 minutes the engines are cooled down too fast. This "shock cooling" would reduce the lifetime of the engines. You can compare it to some turbochargers in cars which also need some cooldown time. If the taxi time to the gate or parking position is very short, we keep the engines running at the gate until the 3 minutes are elapsed.
No, it looks to me that they did not get too close to the airplane when the engines were running. They did not cross the red/white painted lines which are visible on the apron floor. I assume that this is the "official" boundary for them and shows where they are allowed to be when the engines are running. In addition, the ground crew has a map which shows exactly how close they may approach the airplane at which position. The chocks were placed into position after I switched the engines and the rotating beacon off.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ich bin gestern Nach Hurghada geflogen. 😄
Please refer to the published job offers for the "official" details about the requirements. My personal (unofficial) understanding is that there is a certain level of knowledge of the German language required if somebody is working for Eurowings Germany in the cockpit. I do not know if the level is required on the first day or if you can proof it after a while.
Thanks for watching and the good wishes! Automatic landings require a special instrument landing system. There is no such system installed at Santorini airport. This is usually only available at the big airports in areas where fog, low clouds or restricted visibility does not permit manual landings on several days during the year.
I am sorry but I don't get the point of asking for a visual if you're flying it like an RNP or RNAv visual. AP OFF but keeping the FD's with the PM doing the input does not make a lot of sense as well. Otherwise it's well captured. Cool to see both the PFD and ND.
Thanks for watching! The full approach to runway 33 (which we were originally cleared for) would have been much longer. Please check out the charts. I assume that we saved about 15 miles of flight distance with the visual approach clearance. The RNAV part we used to aid the visual approach was from the approach to runway 15, circle to land to runway 33. We are flying a lot with autopilot off and flight directors on. Most of the visual approaches are flown without flight directors or autopilot. Santorini is one of very few airports which have even a guidance available for a short visual approach at the end of an RNAV approach. It is our decision to use it or not. Here we used it and the guidance was really good.
We first set 1200 because the final approach part of our selected approach is coded out of 1200 feet. But due to the fact that we were cleared for a visual approach, we set that to 1500 feet in anticipation of a possible straight downwind segment. As we were approaching 1500 feet, there was no need for a much longer straight downwind segment. So we set it back to 1200 feet and started the final descent shortly afterwards. We discussed all that in a very detailed briefing which is not part of the video.
It looks quickly but we are trained for that and know exactly what we do. We did a very detailed briefing (which is not visible in the video) and we are flying with 2 pilots. One is pilot flying and the other is monitoring and assisting.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Without a doubt, but from a perspective of common person and a viewer, with all that quick atc chit chat in the background, it seem Very Quick.
I love it when Germans speak English and you don't hear an accent at all 😂🤣😂
Because of the Minimums (BARO). You can see that the captain inserted the minimums at 2:15. When they are the inserted altitude by the captain, they should have the runway in sight, else it will be a go around
The altitude tape turns amber as soon as the Airbus descents below the entered MDA (see approach chart). As stated here by another viewer, this is the altitude at which the runway has to be in sight during an instrument approach. If not, the approach needs to be discontinued. We were flying a visual approach. During the visual approach, the runway is always in sight. At 07:03 the approach was done and the flight management and guidance system switched modes.
Grazie.

RNAV approaches are actually more precise than ILS, nevertheless, in clear weather they add very little safety.

Awesome visual approach and very good content :) will be joining the EWE team in October and find your videos very helpful and informative !!
Welcome to the Eurowings family! And thanks for the great feedback!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you Captain, looking forward :)
The size of the caldera is just enormous!
I agree! Very impressive!
Hello Cpt.
A beautiful visual approach video. 🤩👍
I think Santorini is an interesting airport, isn't it?
Again great video and view from the cockpit is awesome.
What I really, really liked are the pictures of the plane and the cabin.
The outside view of the plane is also great for me!
If I'm not mistaken, you're doing the outside check right now, aren't you?
I'm looking forward to the next video again.
With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week!
Greetings from Styria 🤗
Werner
Werner, thanks for watching and your great feedback! Yes, we do an outside check before every flight. We arrived early in Santorini. This gave us a little more time on the ground than usually. Best greetings to Styria! Have a wonderful week!
Hey I love your videos cap! I would like to ask you, I am a greek resident living near athens international airport and I have my own air band receiver to listen to ATC. I often hear this weird repeatitive noise on frequency, exactly like the one at 7:46. Its really distracting and it always blocks transmissions. Do you know what it is? Is it normal?
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! We were also wondering about this noise and did not find out the cause for it.
Great video! Could you maybe show a complete approach again sometime in the future? With the whole decend from cruising altitude
Thank you so much for the very good feedback! Have a nice day!
Absolutely beautiful aircraft!
I agree!!!!
Great video as usual Captain. I notice that there is no VOR 15 circling 33 procedure in Jeppesen charts. Why this?
Thanks for watching and the great feedback. Yes, I agree, the NEO is a wonderful airplane!
very nice video, very nice and safety approach, and Neo less fuel, max profiet
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! Yes, the plane needs less fuel and emissions are also significantly reduced! I do not know about the profit. But I know that the A320 NEO is more expensive than the CEO. So the additional price may take away some or all of the saved money.
Wow super Video!
Was taking your sunglasses off at the end of the video rehearsed? 🤣 Awesome video!
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! No, it was not rehearsed! I was very surprised about the dual action as I watched the raw video material and could not resist including it in the final video.
Guten Morgen!
Nice video! Santorini is actually a giant volcano where the islands are the rim of the crater. Has not had an eruption for a looong time, luckily 🙂
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! I hope that the volcano will stay quiet for a very long time.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thankyou for your response. Yes that makes sense with the brakes. Have a good weekend 👍
F/O confidence level is v good.his comunication precise.landing was perfect with capt gave good guidence.all in very good video
Thanks for the good feedback! I agree, the First Officer did a great job! His landing was perfect!
Very nice !!!!!!!
I don't speak very well english...... What is saying the first officer at 8:45 ? ........ available ? "and APU is available" ? am i wrong ?
Thanks for watching and your question. You are right. He said "APU is available". Have a nice day!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos ty for the lesson, really appreciate, wish you all the best and clear skies, tschuss and gruesse aus Mazedonien
Beautiful approach and he did a great landing!
I noticed the seats at the exit row say "more legroom" but not "you must be willing and able to open the exit door to sit here". 🤔
I was wondering.. with those side sticks, is the FM's input disabled so you don't bump it the wrong way by accident while pushing the button to talk on the radio?
@@motorcycleaddict50 Thanks for sharing your experience.
No worries, thank you very much for the informative feedback. Your a great Captain as always.
Very nicely done 👍✈️
Thanks a lot!
It all went quite fast there :)
What was the comment at about 6:11 just before the threshold?
It is difficult to understand. It sounds like "speed and descent rate are good".
Very nice approach and smooth landing!
I wanted to ask you, how often do you fly to an airport where the wingspan of A319 matters when taxing?
Thanks for watching and your question! With the A320 family, our wingspan is less than 36 meters. All the airports we fly to can accommodate that. But some of the smaller airports have also taxiways and areas which we cannot use because of our wingspan. Sometimes we have to do a backtrack on the runway instead of using a too tiny taxiway.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you for the answer and again for the great video.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ah, thanks. I think I've seen it in maintenance overhead panel (upper right hand side).
It can be installed at different locations.
Mal wieder tolles Video, vielen Dank fürs teilen!
How polite were the ground staff!
Thanks for watching and for sharing your feedback!
This doesn't seem like an ILS approach because I don't see G/S and LOC on FMA, is this something like non-precision approach?
Hello from SIN/WSSS!
If the taxi time to the gate or parking position is very short, we keep the engines running at the gate until the 3 minutes are elapsed.
excellent video
Thanks!
Ground staff seemed to approach even though engines were running (for cool-down)?
No, it looks to me that they did not get too close to the airplane when the engines were running. They did not cross the red/white painted lines which are visible on the apron floor. I assume that this is the "official" boundary for them and shows where they are allowed to be when the engines are running. In addition, the ground crew has a map which shows exactly how close they may approach the airplane at which position. The chocks were placed into position after I switched the engines and the rotating beacon off.

Looks like a CFO Approach, correct? Very nice piloting!
That is correct! It was the visual approach with additional supportive guidance from the CFO approach. Thanks for the good feedback!
what type of david clarks are those you are wearing?
I do not know. It is a model with active noise reduction. The headsets belong to each airplane and we use several brands.
How come the F/O lets go of the side stick during the flare?
He made a perfect landing and had the plane always under lateral and vertical control! There is nothing to complain about!
please come to lfsb😢
I would love to. I hope to come soon. Have a nice day!
Is it a requirement to speak German to fly for Eurowings?
Please refer to the published job offers for the "official" details about the requirements. My personal (unofficial) understanding is that there is a certain level of knowledge of the German language required if somebody is working for Eurowings Germany in the cockpit. I do not know if the level is required on the first day or if you can proof it after a while.
Interesting video. Why a manual landing ? Is there no Ils in Santorini ( for instrumental landings ) ? Congratulations and good weekend all the crew.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thanks for your comprehensive answer 👍
Safe flights
1200, 1500, ....1200??
We first set 1200 because the final approach part of our selected approach is coded out of 1200 feet. But due to the fact that we were cleared for a visual approach, we set that to 1500 feet in anticipation of a possible straight downwind segment. As we were approaching 1500 feet, there was no need for a much longer straight downwind segment. So we set it back to 1200 feet and started the final descent shortly afterwards. We discussed all that in a very detailed briefing which is not part of the video.
Quit autopilot less than 100 Ft🎉
Autopilot was switched off at 16:18 at about 2600 feet, not at 100 feet.
Everything went so quickly😅
It looks quickly but we are trained for that and know exactly what we do. We did a very detailed briefing (which is not visible in the video) and we are flying with 2 pilots. One is pilot flying and the other is monitoring and assisting.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Without a doubt, but from a perspective of common person and a viewer, with all that quick atc chit chat in the background, it seem Very Quick.
I love it when Germans speak English and you don't hear an accent at all 😂🤣😂
Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das Feedback! Einen schönen Tag noch! Have a great day!
Very interesting, as always! One question: why did the green numbers of the altimeter turn red at 3:38 and turn green again at 7:03?
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you so much! Your explanations are as interesting as your videos! ❤
