    Thank you so much for this video! I was today years old when I learned that the brown coconut comes from the green one. I always thought they were different varieties 🤦‍♂️

    What's the difference between red and green tender coconut? Is it only the colour...

    • @IslandsnHighlands
      @IslandsnHighlands  2 года назад +1

      We have tried only two different coconuts that grow here. We have tried a smaller yellow kind (which is think is what you would call a red coconut) when tender and those actually had meat in them and water. But perhaps they could have been more mature also. We got them from a neighbor. But the red (they look orange to me) ones are smaller than the green and easier to open

    Great video, but can you tell me how to get my green coconuts to the brown stage and once there, maybe do a video showing how you got the round version out of it. I've been wondering why I get such little meat, and now I know why! But mine seem to fall once they get heavy enough and they're still green. Do I leave it in shade till it gets to the brown stage and how long does that take? So many questions and I have so many coconuts in my one tree here in Palm beach gardens, FL! I love it here!!! I get like 50+ coconuts in the green large sized with each batch between trimmings. I could probably sell fruit from all the diff trees I've planted here on my little lot. Tropical fruit is where its at!

      There are many different varieties of coconuts, so they can all be slightly different. We mainly have the Green Coconut because my neighbors have lots they put in their debris pile and that is where I collect them from to sprout. There are orange and red coconuts that don't turn fully brown when they are fully ripe and full of meat. Our Green Coconuts we can pick green and let ripen to brown in a few months, however it is best to let them turn brown on the tree. When we open the coconut when it is brown it is much harder to do so. We bury a large crowbar in the ground with a cinder block on it. You have the straight part stick straight up out of the ground. You take the coconut and thrust it on the edge of the crowbar and once you get it in there a good ways wiggle it and try to work off that first piece of coconut coir to rip off...it takes some muscle. You can continue to work the coconut coir off this way or you can use a heavy duty flat head screw driver to wedge under the coir and rip off 2 inch strips at a time (I let my kids use the screw driver method as it is saver). Once you have gotten about half of it off its a bit easier to finish the job. It certainly takes some muscles. Some people bury a machete in the ground blade up and do the same technique (maybe faster but seems dangerous to me until I get better at it). Once you get the coconut out, hold the coconut sideways (so the monkey face is looking out either side) You take the back of your machete and while holding the coconut hit it (halfway between the face and the bottom) and keep turning it away from you and hitting it all the way around and around until it cracks open. I will try and get a coconut opening video put together soon, that would be a fun one to do. I also plan on putting up some Coconut leaf weaving videos, which are another awesome way to use the tree of life! I hope this helps, I think the video would be best to show, and I'll get that on the plans to put together soon!
