    I fully agree that the 2000 series is a outstanding deal when you have to balance performance vs. cabinet size, e.g. in small rooms. I got a pack of five SB-2000 (old version, not pro) and configured those in my HT as a double bass array - 3 front subs and 2 rear sub. In this config the rear subs are *not* contributing to the overall SPL performance as they only annihilate the front sub bass, hence I basically have the power of 3x SB-2000 in terms of max output. That said, I am reaching 107db@10Hz and >110db@20Hz when generating compression sweeps (like in this video) and 105db peaks with actual, demanding movie content (War of the Worlds). So take two SB-2000 pro and you are ready to go for reference level. 😈

      While I agree for the most part; the SB 2000 (and pros) are amazing subwoofers and I love my two SB 2000 pros, they certainly have more to give than I demand listening levels - wise (living room setup in an apartment) but they cannot provide Reference Level bass.
      Reference level demands that the bass can hit 115 db peaks at the listening position all the way down to 20Hz (and that's only if you run the subs completely flat without any bass boost applied) - which two Sb 2000s cannot even dream to achive not even four can provide that except maybe in a really tiny room with massive roomgain.
      A SB 2000 can hit roughly 92db @ 2m measured with 2010 CEA procedure, so four can hit roughly 104db @ 2m outdoors (in the very best case, meaning perfect wave coupling).
      Of course in most rooms you get quite a substantial roomgain but you also have to take into account that you most likely won't get the 12db boost (from going from 1 to 4 subwoofers) because in the real world, they usually don't add output perfectly unless you colocate the subs (meaning put them on top or right next to each other). Also in most setups, you don't sit just 2m away from the subs, so you'll lose even more output from the theoretical 104db...
      If you want to run reference levels, get two PB 2000s they should be able to procive that to 20Hz in most rooms.

      @@floz9718 I know the audioholics measurements as well and you do the right math. Your fallacy is the 115db: this is just a theoretical value. 90% of all movies on UHD / Blu-Ray will stay within the 103db range, some might hit 105db and very, very few movies like Blade Runner 2049 exceed this treshhold by 1-2db at reference level. Second thing to consider is that many movies on disc are filtered in the low frequencies (unfortunately), hence they roll-off below 25-35Hz quickly.
      That's why in real life 2x SVS SB-2000 pro - which should be able to deliver about 100db@25Hz in a small to medium sized room and even more db above 25Hz - are sufficient to play back movies at reference level. Or let's rephrase my thesis: take two SB-2000 pro and you will be good to listen almost all content at reference level without missing much (except for 2-3db below 25Hz). If you are aiming for the latter one, you better go ported (or take another one or two SB-2000 🙂).

    The ruler flat response is due to room gain. Your HT room is just happens to be perfect for it. In reality it is a sloping response. So I'd assume they have DSP limiters set at around 85-80dB from 20Hz down to 10Hz and then a high pass after that.
    Four of these for four grand? How about just two Stereo Integrity HST-18 in $100(total) sealed cabinets for more ULF bass and over $1000 cheaper? (You'll see some people suggesting how this SVS has "quality bass" than that option 😂).
    By the way Jiles, why don't you include sub-10Hz response curves?

    • @Stan_the_Belgian
      @Stan_the_Belgian 2 года назад

      I like DIY, I like to build myself, and I agree a DIY option would give more for your buck, but your calculation is just false. You need an amplifier to drive them, DSP to correct them, and no way you can build for 100 USD/cabinet including feet, insulation and a nice finish. If you build 4 dayton UM15's in a Hammer or just sealed you will get crazy bass for about half the price, excluding the amp.
      I agree on the REW graph, he does this in all his videos, he should measure in open field or something and possibly compare it to the response in his small room.

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  2 года назад +5

      I agree on the room gain. That is one reason I like to measure in room. It’s not to show folks exactly what they will get but rather to give them an example of how the equipment will work in a real work application. As you have seen in proior videos I’m a big fan of DIY too. But not everyone is willing to go the DIY route. And some folks need a really small form factor for their application. All kinds of needs out there. And I don’t include sub 10hz … well I haven’t really thought about it. I included down to 10 just to give some buffer around 20 hz. Is there any value to trying to short out amps and stuff measuring any lower?

    • @JilesMcCoy
      @JilesMcCoy  2 года назад +4

      Hey, I’m not trying to find that kind of sub measurement . Other folks can do ground plane measurements. I want to show real world applications of a device so people can see what that looks like. It gives an idea of what the device really can do in a room. I agree on the pricing. I did a video a while back about the true cost of DIY subwoofers.

    Hey. I have a question. Somewhat off topic, but still - SVS:
    I am currently running dual PB1000 (old version, not pro). Would it be an upgrade to go with one SB2000 or SB3000? Just a single sub, not dual.
    The struggle is - should I invest more time and $ into purchasing a miniDSP (+ microphone) and try setting up my PBs, or would it be just more simple to go to one sealed sub to get more accuracy and punch.
    I am only one person who cares about the sound in the family, so "even bass across multiple seats" is not an issue. Although, I have to admit that when I stepped up from one PB1000 to duals, I heard the difference..

    I know this is subjective and depended on room. But typically, on an sb 2000, where do people “typically” have the volume set on the app for the svs sub for movies? -15, -10, -5 etc?

    I’ve got 2 RSL Speedwoofer 10s’s. I’d like to have a tad more refinement in terms of sound, texture and articulation within hearing the distinction between different bass notes. Would the SVS sb2000 Pro accommodate this? I also love the idea of the app and having a choice of piano black. While the Speedwoofers perform well, they’re rather rubbish in terms of looks, plus I’m wanting sealed enclosures now.

      No doubt, I measured the same in my room. The "trick" is with the max output level. The build-in DSP will limit the output below 30Hz dynamically during demanding movie scenes. In my room with three front SB-2000s (not pro!), compression set's in at 95db@20Hz and 100db@25Hz with real live content (e.g. Ready Player One - The Race scene). At the same time the subs delivery 108db peaks at ~28Hz and above.
