At 47:34, the 15th PZG could attack the commando unit; even though the 1/2 road movement bonus is cancelled due to first turn surprise, you don’t have to pay the +1 river MP penalty. But I agree with others; this video is awesome and invaluable to learn the game! Oh, and static units can retreat (it was mentioned earlier in the video that you can’t).
This is an incredibly well-presented and detailed look at the game. It is really the next best thing to having the game explained across the table. At 01:31:30, shouldn't the HG division also be out of supply? They can trace supply through the adjacent Italian unit, which negates the EZOC there, but I see no four-hex path that would take them to a valid supply source because the Allies are blocking the roads east and west.
Still remember that German propaganda poster showing an Allied snail inching its way up the "leg" of Italy. This fine game reflects that situation. If a player is looking for a game with sweeping advances, try something like the Eastern Front 1941, The video is very useful in learning the mechanics of what must be admitted is a complex detailed game. Great video Joe. It must take a lot of time and effort to produce, plus learning the game in the first place. A labor of love indeed, as one of the commentators remarked.
Thanks. Stuka Joe! Your video about Solo Method for Paths of Glory helped me a lot. Now I bought "No Retreat The Italian Front" mostly because it has the Brazilian Expeditionary Force as part of the game and, for my surprise, I found this excellent video explaining the rules. You saved me twice! I'm happy that people like you are willing to spend time explaining the hobby for other people. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
THANK YOU for the game play through... I might not have thought about this game, but because of the play through... I might change my thinking about about the no-retreat games.. BRAVO
1) At 36:40, the 2 strength Italian static unit suffers a DS result and you retreat it 2 hexes. But section 14.7.5 in the rulebook - the last blue box before 14.7.6 - states that static units are immobile and can never retreat. Shouldn't the unit have been eliminated (not returned to the draw cup) per 14.7.6? 2) At 55:27, the HG Panzer unit attack on the 82nd Airborne is joined by the Italian (white) 1 SP unit. However, rule 14.1.1 states that white SP units cannot voluntarily participate in an attack. The odds calculation should therefore have been 7-4 instead of 8-4, dropping 2:1 down to 3:2... Great video BTW - required viewing for anyone learning to play!
Speechless, Joe. Watched the WHOLE thing and -- granted that I'm already familiar with previous GMT NR iterations -- your vid really explained everything perfectly. Pretty much required viewing for anyone wanting to get an edge up on learning this game. What else can I say... It's utterly StukaJoe- quality. One question: at around 17:25, you played (i.e., drew a new card only) the _Alphonse Juin_ card. I was sorely disappointed when you did not scream "VIVE LA FRANCE" as instructed on that card. C'est triste, man,... c'est très triste. :)
+Bobby Factor My apologies to Gen. Juin. Here it goes now: "VIVE LA FRANCE!!!". This is my first close look at the No Retreat system. Seems to me that this is a highly interactive system, especially with the card play and the counterblow mechanic, which give the two-player experience lots of tension and surprises. The added bonus is that this game has the full Italian campaign, something that the venerable Anzio, by Avalon Hill, cannot deliver. And to top all that, the components are just gorgeous! Who could ask for anything more? Thanks for your support, Bobby.
Really well done. Great video; the No Retreat system has always confounded me (hate the rulebooks, I think they are very unintuitive). Do you like this game more or less than No Retreat North Africa?
Loved the game. In fact, I helped develop the No Anvil/No Dragoon variant you can find on Grognards. The Allies don't lose the French mountain divisions but have to drive off the northern board before the end of the game. ie. Churchill gets his way.
Saludos.
Hey Joe... a little confused??? OK, logically, I understand mountain units neutralizing mountain hexes. What I don't quite understand, logically, is that IF you are across a river, why does a commando unit somehow manage to sneak by all those Germans? It might happen SOME of the time, but it makes no sense that it should happen all the time. It's a minor twitch, but it goes against everything I learned from AH game play and my own logical approach. Please weigh in... thanks
Quick question about the ranger unit that was eliminated during the exchange with the Italians. Should it have surrendered like in NR1 where if you're out of supply and are eliminated? Great video, always enjoy watching these keep up the great work!
Thanks. Anzio is a typical move-all-units-then-resolve-combat type of game. The step reduction system is great, where you have around four counters for each unit. In No Retreat, the cards are the source of the surprises and tension.
+Gamer Hudson I think its because this one has a lot of chrome. By this I mean, a lot of rules for different kinds of units in the game. Also, the mechanic of playing a quick turn or a slow one (with various sub-turns) takes getting used to, but its essential to re-create the Italian campaign within a reasonable amount of time.
They're there! The only thing is that you have to wait until 1945 for them to enter play, or play a 1945 scenario, which, frankly, I don't know if the game has one. Cheers. Viva Brasil!

An amazing video! This taught me far more than reading the rules or following the examples ever did! Thank you!!
Thanks, Timothy! Glad to know the video remains useful! Cheers!
I bet I've watched this video 10 times. Watching it again right now.
THANK YOU for the game play through... I might not have thought about this game, but because of the play through... I might change my thinking about about the no-retreat games.. BRAVO
Thanks for posting this video. A huge help in bringing the rules and the game to life before I bring my
copy to the table for the first time.
Great stuff. My interest in the theater is currently high and this came along just at the right time.
Fabulous job, as always Joe. Thanks so much for all the work you put into this.
+savethefunk Thanks, savethefunk. My pleasure.

My bad. Sorry about that.
Just purchased this game and looking forward to playing it. Your video should be very helpful. You are the maestro :)

Great job as always, Joe. I have played Husky several times, I'd really like to try the full campaign.
Thanks, Mighty Spoiler.

Great job once again Joe! =)
Great video, Joe. I just have buy this fantastic game and this video it's a great help for playing it.
Thanks, Job. Just saw your post here. Sorry for the late response. Hope you like the game, there's not many good Italian campaign games out there.

Gracias Joe
I wish someone would do NR: North Africa as well as you did this one.

Great video, im gonna buy this game based on your work
Thank you and enjoy the game! Cheers.
amazing Joe..u r the best..subscribed..
Thanks, David. Sorry for my late response. Just noticed today.

great video, complimenti!
This sounds like a great game... how did you find this game in comparison AH's Anzio? Just curious. Love your reviews
Thanks. Anzio is a typical move-all-units-then-resolve-combat type of game. The step reduction system is great, where you have around four counters for each unit. In No Retreat, the cards are the source of the surprises and tension.
+Stuka Joe I'm going to put this game and maybe No Retreat Russia on my "to get list"... thanks
+Jim Smith Based on your review... I'm going to give this game a go... got it on my "buy" list, after "Warfighter" WWII, and Huey Leader.
Whats up with the difficulty on this one as compared to others? The complexity level is way higher for some reason on the back of the box
Stuka Joe got ya thanks. is it impossible to solo due to the card play?
Excellent video. Just a small note: In the living rules, static units cannot retreat
Yes, I think I have a static unit retreating in a combat situation. Sorry about that.
Great playthrough..much better than those using Vassal.
Agree, Fernando. Vassal is a great tool, but games look too flat for my taste.
55:40 - not 7 str? I thought that forces with white number cannot attack
That’s right. That was my blooper!
At 6:00 what does FJ stand for?
Fallschirmjäger = German Paratroopers. Literally "parachute hunters".
blueonblack83 um yeah but what do these do? anti parachute, or are they using parachutes, ?
do they hunt for parachute, or are they hunuters using parachutes?
so tempted to get this game
What's the point of playing full campaign of Italy more than once, given that Italy always loses?
great job! subscribed
Thanks, Tom. I hope you enjoy the channel.
looking forward to it. getting back into wargames and picked up a few including NR: North African Front. looks like a great system.
Wow. What a great video. Must buy gsme now.
+Henrik S Törnblom Thank you, Henrik. You will be very pleased with the components when you see them. They are amazing! I am in love with this map!
looks pretty awesome
Yes, EVEN brazilians! The snake has smoken in Italy! :-)
They're there! The only thing is that you have to wait until 1945 for them to enter play, or play a 1945 scenario, which, frankly, I don't know if the game has one. Cheers. Viva Brasil!
