  • After visiting the stunning towns and villages of Northern Ireland we came to our first city before crossing the border to the Republic of Ireland.
    Londonderry or Derry became famous in 1972 because of the shootings of 14 innocent people by the British army as they took part in a local march, often referred to as the Troubles we take a look at current day and why this city has changed.

    The walls were built by the English to keep the Irish out. They also renamed the city from Derry to Londonderry, hence the reason the name is controversial. Most Protestants call it Londonderry and most Catholics call it Derry

    I have never been to Ireland, I was born in South Wales and the only time I've been to England is when I emigrated with my parents and brother and sisters, who were ten pound poms to come to Australia, where I've been ever since.
    If you ever come to Melbourne, please let me know, as I would love to meet you both and show you around a bit.
    As always I love your channel - you with Nick and Sarah and they're two little doggies are the best Motor Home Channels on RUclips, also my 18 year old wee doggie passed away, a few months after your little one passed.

    Hi. Londonderry was built by the Honourable Irish Society under the reign of James 1st of England, it was one of two large towns built during the Plantation of Ulster, the other being Coleraine, both received their charters in 1613. It was built to keep the Native Irish out as they weren't to happy with the English & Scottish moving in. It is also know as the Maiden City as its walls have never been breached. The pile of wood near the walls is for the 11th night bonfire which is held there every year on the 11th August.before the Apprentice Boys Parade which is held on the 12th August to celebrate the end to the Siege of Derry

    • @AustellHenderson
      @AustellHenderson 12 дней назад

      @@oo-mp4ol The 12th of July was to celebrate the victory that King William of Orange had over King James ll at the Battle of the Boyne. That ended any chance James had in taken over the whole if the British Isles but the at the very start of James ll was travelling through Ireland rising a army to take over the British Isles until he came to Londonderry where instead of just walking in and making himself at home the youth of the city shut the gates on his troops. King James wasn't happy with this inconvenience so he turned up at the city personally only be be shot at and a soldier next to him was shot and killed so he thought to himself, F...k this boys, put the city under siege until they wise up and Surrender, and to help speed thing up his troops would shoot from canons from the nearby hills, over the city walls. A long with all the folk killed more died of starvation and disease forcing them to eat cats, dogs and rats. The cats, Dogs and rats would eat the dead of King James army. It was the longest siege in Europe with 8000 people in the city dieing but they would never Surrender and that's why today people of the area will still say No Surrender. The siege ended when three ships got through the Boom that was across the river Foyle, bring food to the city meaning James had no chance of taking over the city. It had held him back which lead him not getting his big army and losing the following year at the Boyne. That's why the Apprentice Boys celebrated on the 12th of August. It celebrates the end of a siege and they have celebrated the 12th every year since then. The 11th nights are for bonfires. Back in them days bonfires where used to signal stuff like invading army's etc. They would've been on high hilltops.

Wanted to ask if you have ever considered going to Fuengirola and doing a day trip to Gibraltar, my sister and I were born there 1964, 1965 (Dad was serving in the British Navy) I have been to Gib 3 times but never been up the rock to Apes Den. Your more and welcome to visit are beautiful city again but I hope the weather is better for your next visit and i recommend a weekend cos the town and nightlife is good with plenty of irish craic and a warm irish welcome and at least the grass cutters won't be around in the weekends so you can have a hangover with a lay in

    Great quality video, amusing how little is known about tbe places you visit, when in Broughshane you missed the first Aires outside of Europe, also the thatch pub, also most decorated soldier in British history also also if in the pub the King has drank in there on two different occasions. You would have saw the pictures, in Bushmills all the bunting was about a battle between two English kings over the throne in 1690! The maiden city so named as its walls have never been breached! Derry, Londonderry was the site of the longest siege in British history also extreemly important during WW2. Etc, etc. Good video though, ask the locals, here people will talk to you and help you.
