I've come to this conclusion: anyone can clean a home, but it takes effort on the part of everyone who crosses its threshold to keep a home clean. If everyone isn't committed (I mean all the adults), it causes frustration and resentment. When we married, my husband spoke a great deal about what a neat freak he was - total lie. Once a week he would clean everything in his place clean enough to pass for new, but the rest of the week he was a slob. I grew up with hoarders, never learned how to keep clean, only how to clean up. All my efforts to maintain cleanliness don't amount to anything when he is still in the "it's okay to make a mess of the place now, because it will get cleaned up on cleaning day" mindset. I like to keep the Girl Scout rule of "leave no trace or leave it better" as much as possible, but being disabled means that's not always an option.
