  • Lanterne Rouge presents highlights of Stage 11 of the Tour de France 2021 where the riders faced the historic Mont Ventoux climb two times but with a descent finish. A breakaway with polka dot jersey hopefuls like Quintana and Alaphilippe would surely form but energy conservation was key in this 200km stage, where Tadej Pogacar was put under pressure once again by his rivals in Jumbo-Visma and INEOS.

      It was neutralized because Roglic is gone, and Thomas is injured, and Pogacar is 5 minutes ahead already - the only one left with the balls to attack, is a young inexperienced rider, that didn't expect to be in that position, so of course he waits, because even just a top 10 finish will be considered a huge success, he was never supposed to be the one that created the racing.

    I could not believe my eyes, nor conceal my excitement, when Vingegaard drove away from Pogacar. It's a bummer that he didn't even get a few seconds or something, but the fact that it is humanly possible to distance Pogacar on a climb might be playing into the mind games of the coming mountain stages.
    Also, super happy for Jumbo Visma in general. Seeing Tony Martin crash out seemed like digging the hole deeper, but what a way to turn it around. Now we just need van Aert to win the sprint tomorrow to have the weirdest two stage wins in row. I'd love to see it.

      Ventoux specifically is a bit of a nightmare to organise a finish on, because there is not really anything there on the top, just some roads, parking lots, and old an old decommissioned weathertower, but no infrastructure beyond that, not much space, and nothing to entertain spectators at the finish. But in general it's becoming a bit of a trend, to have fewer mountain top finishes, since the GC favourites tends to just sit on each other till 3 km to go, and then just sprint to the finish from there.

    • @ivanjulian2532
      @ivanjulian2532 3 года назад +3

      Indeed. Even if we accept Pogačar was 19 seconds behind Jonas over the top of Mont Ventoux, his time was still the 2nd fastest ascent from Chalet Reynard to the Summit in TdF history, coupled with Pogi's data being the fastest of all time on STRAVA. In fairness, in previous editions the wind has played a role but the reality is Pogi still eclipsed Pantani's and Armstrong's times in Year 2000 by a minute and a half, so some perspective is in order. Like you said Yoog, his gap to 2nd place on GC actually grew.

    First of, I do not get why people claim the 2nd descend neutralizes the race. It certainly didn't for Pogacar in stage 8, right?
    I think this is more a combination of team tactics and inexperience: If Vingegaard (or his team) would have known he can put time in Pogacar, he probably would have started his acceleration earlier. Ideally, arriving at the top of Mont Ventoux only a few seconds behind WvA, so they can hammer a mad decent, put more time into Pogacar and everyone else and go for the stage win. With the time separations as they were at the mountain top, that was not possible.
    Also, I think we may have to revise the saying "doing a Moviestar". I think it really comes down to Carapaz not being able to properly communicate. I do not blame him for not having the legs: He has attacked and tried a lot. But he must say so in the team meeting. And I have the feeling (from the Moviestar documentary and the anecdotal evidence with INEOS) they cannot honestly admit they do not have the form (maybe it's not what real men do, no idea). Heck, INEOS lost a crucial guy for literally nothing. If I was Rowe, I would probably be like "Yeah... fuck this, INEOS has to up may pay for this shit".
