Please don't recommend BURG anymore. It is not updated in nearly a decade now and that can lead to security issues.

      Hold up, you are right.
      How is that possible?
When I was looking for alternatives I initially found a Github repo for BURG which was updated in October 2022.
      Gotta look into this, thanks

What about rEFInd tho? That is good because i don't have to hold down f12 everytime to switch to usb boot or sometimes that grub os prober doesn't find windows i always use rEFInd because that just auto finds everything everytime

Refind is the holy grail of EFI systems. It finds grub and systemd boot entries as well as bootable kernels on root fs, can boot windows and opencore, and just any efi executable. It allows to boot from usb or enter the firmware.

rEFInd is awesome, I used it for more than 2 years. If Grub gets updated, you need to run sudo refind-mkdefault to restore it. However, I'm now using Secure Boot and unfortunately couldn't get rEFInd to work with it.

My preferred boot method is an uki (unified kernel image). It's basically the same as booting the kernel itself without a boot loader. I think it's easier to use (e.g. for kernel arguments), it's a lot faster and if a kernel breaks, you can just use a "backup" kernel. ( I for example have two efi entries one with the newest -zen kenerl and one with a kernel (6.1) that doesn't change with updates which is pretty robust)

rEFInd is also a great boot manager and highly customizable. I saw a couple of people using it with the steam deck. 😄

If you have systemd, and you want something simple and a bit more modern, systemd-boot is quite nice.
It only works with EFI though, no legacy support.

@@mat_max Because it's not very configurable. Grub lets you change all kind of things; colors, background, etc. systemd-boot is very much a no-nonsense way to start up a system but it doesn't offer much for ricers.

Only thing I've used other than Grub is rEFInd which is prettier but I've found it to be buggier whereas I've found grub to just work. I'm a dirty disgusting dual-booter so grub is always super useful.
(Part of the bugginess of rEFInd is likely due to it not being default on most distros and my lack of ability when installing it. Perhaps on a DIY Arch install or something it just rocks)

  • @arvindhn036
    @arvindhn036 Год назад +11

I suggest rEFInd for pretty bootloader.
My personal system uses systemdboot with a 2 second timeout (in case i need to change the kernel) and plymouth (program which provides boot animation) with custom theme.
From my experience systemdbootd is better than grub2 in terms of speed and supports FDE.
You dont need a pretty bootloader for selecting windows as most installation use secure boot and you can select windows boot manager from Boot menu of your motherboard (F9 in most cases)

I could hug you for this! You're right, Grub is not aesthetically pleasing to everyone, but I am glad to know that it doesn't look like a nightmare to make it look nicer. I might go with a Coffee theme, and maybe it will ask if I have had my coffee for the day ☕😸☕

Some Microsoft Surfaces with the newest UEFI broke GRUB compatibility. Luckily Fedora-39-Everything ships with the option to use systemd-boot instead of GRUB. So that's what I use as a bootloader now. The default resolution of bootloaders is barely readable on small, high resolution displays, but I don't plan to customize anything as long as it works.

Lilo has been slowly taken over by Grub and discontinued it's development. Why this exactly happened is a bit unkown. There were some limitations regarding Raids and GPT, which the developers didn't want to fix, but some distros swapped way before the announcement

I know I can go into the BIOS and put Windows on top in the boot order to boot into it first. I like the options with Grub though to choose what I boot into, when Ubuntu is on top in the boot order in BIOS. Windows is my main OS. Right now, I have Ubuntu installed as a dual boot to learn Linux. Is there a way to still use Grub or Burg but have Windows be the default if I take too long to choose which OS I want to boot into?

Cool, has anyone created an app that install the most powerful bootloader (coz' it's the only one that got to boot on an EFI based Mac, at least with Mint Linux after trying a lot of distros) so it's easier? I want to install Grub on a Windows USB Installer Flashdrive so it can be used on the EFI based Mac and PC.
I guess that'd be Burg, I'll make a fork God-willing called Burger and then someone will make a fork of that called Grubber, hehe :-) for a reversal.
