Actually, the reason he lives in a pineapple is because pineapple is used in Polynesian crafts, and Hillenberg thought he would like the smell of a pineapple home
So, that explains it.
The show's aeathethic is a mix of hawaiian/polynesian mix with old retrofuturistic underwater exploration, you can see it on the metalnbuildings of the city and on plankton's tech
You can absolutely tell that a scientist geek made SpongeBob and it would have never been as good if Hillenburg WASN'T a nerd. Excellent art direction.
Another good example of retrofuturism is the buses in SpongeBob
it cant be a mix of hawaiian and polynesian because hawaiian is a subculture of polynesian. thats like saying italy is a mix of italian and european culture

Easter Island is considered Polynesian like Hawaii despite being close to South America, because the natives came there from the west across the Pacific.

Even the Hawaiian music and tracks really helped to sell the atmosphere of the show.
But the flowers in the sky and even in the wallpaper of the homes also gave me Hawaii vibes.
The flowers in the sky are actually supposed to be jelly fish. There are supposed to be like clouds I guess.
The ending song from "Jellyfish Jam" had a Hawaiian vibe.
It truly is sad that SpongeBob no longer fits the relaxed and inviting Hawaiian vibes of the earlier episodes. It produced such a unique feeling that no other cartoon could. Along with the laughter and such of a regular cartoon, the Hawaiian aesthetic almost made you part of the land somehow? Like you were there with the characters, however they couldn't see you. You were one with the Hawaiian vibes, but without getting into the antics of the characters.

Squid should have his own show, and here’s the plot: Squidward finally decides to move for real. He leaves the pacific altogether. The show will be a mix of squid being squid (doing art and music and just indulging in life) and stumbling into some adventures
Modern SpongeBob is going to bring back the Chrome world from SB-129 in an upcoming episode. That deserves a video from you.

I started watching the show since episode 1 aired and stopped at around season 4-5. I’m glad I lived through SpongeBob’s Goledn age and not the mess that it is now

I always wondered how the references to Hawaii, Texas, and pirate talk translated over to foreign audiences watching foreign dubs.
I mention pirate talk because it's more or less just based on the accent in south-west England, where there were many ports that pirates would've used. However, that's specific to an English speaker's idea of what a pirate sounds like.

according to Google, the Easter Island in the South Pacific has a distance of around 7.221 km from Hawaii, which should be somewhere in the range of 4.500 miles (give or take a few).
Maybe the hawaiian vibe was chosen because many people might almost only know hawaiian music and aesthetics when thinking about any given region in the Pacific Ocean. It´s just like how many people automatically think of certain types of music when they think of France for example, or Germany, India, China or the deep south of the US.
Easter Island is most def not Hawaii, however both areas were settled by Polynesian navigators, and it seems to me Spongebob has more generally a Hawaiian/Polynesian inspired aesthetic.
It saddens me how much they just torture squidward these days. I can't stand it. I miss these older episodes.

I like the tikiland ending. The way SpongeBob and Patrick endure pain just so Squidward is happy shows how much they want(ed) to help him be happy. I think its a nice touch, not perfect but nice.

i’ve always resonated with Spongebob’s Hawaiian and Pacific aesthetics in general, especially since i was around a lot of that kind of style and cultures during childhood when Spongebob was first airing

Another show that does a Hawaiian aesthetic good is Pokémon The Series: Sun & Moon.
That show was also chill and happy like spongebob. Which was good as a breather after the dbz like x and y, but I do wish they went back to seriousness for journeys.

I really loved the calming nature of the early seasons. I even listened to some of the audiobook versions of some episodes as a kid to fall asleep. And I think the hawaiian music really helped a lot. I wish we could get something like that again. Why is modern Spongebob refusing to do anything remotely similar to the early seasons again? Why is it so stubborn to stick to the zany over-the-top no-breathing-room style? Criticism of modern Spongebob is some of the most unanimous media criticism in recent media discourse history after all. I guess that could be a potential discussion video in itself.
Getting high and watching these videos is pure bliss.

Actually, I like that the mid seasons started using songs that felt more SpongeBob cartoony over the Hawaiian music I mean I’m a fan of both, but I prefer stuff like slide whistle stooges, wahine wobble, Marlin madness, and others luckily there are also some that are a Fusion of the two like Aloha Bikini bottom

i think its both sad and rediculous that newer seasons seem to just completely forget and ignore that they are UNDERWATER! In older episodes, when things like fire came up, they often joked about it in a self aware fashion, or they would drink a glass of water by swooshing a glass through the "air", etc.. these days its just unironic and without care or consideration, and that ticks me off

Modern SpongeBob got rid of the old seasons' amazing tone and atmosphere. It feels like I have to be only sensory overloaded and only super happy which makes it very tiring out and feels painful to watch.

Easter Island (not Eastern Island) is in Polynesia, the southern pacific ocean, much like Hawaii. Though Easter Island, or Rapanui as the natives call it, is owned by Chile and not the USA

Sad to see even the hawaiian music in the background barely appears anymore. The whole vibe just completely switches in those modern seasons, not just animation, writing and so on but even the original asthetics of the show such as the background music. They completely overuse those boring "cartoony tracks" nowadays and replaced most hawaiian tracks with them. Kinda sad to realize that.
