    We need more smaller cars such as the Picanto. Larger vehicles come with higher upfront price tags and additional driving costs compared with smaller vehicles. Not all of us want or need an SUV or larger crossover.

    Small city cars are not dead yet! As someone who has owned 2 VW ups, this class of car will always have a place in my heart!
    Great video as always Matt, I just bought a VW T-Cross last week (yes I gave in to the small SUV trend, despite previously judging it) and honestly, love the car! I learned from your channel to look for one with full history, low mileage and do a vehicle history check. Something I didn't do before buying my previous Mazda and definitely regretted! Thanks for everything Matt... Would like to know your honest opinion of the T-Cross and small SUVs :)

      Valid point , but it's surprisingly good for people who are petrolheads too. What it lacks in outright horsepower it gives back in lightness and we all know lightness is good for agility and handling. Get a GT-Line and they don't look that bad at all.
      In reality non-petrolheads will instead get a Nissan Juke on finance, run it on cheap tyres, never bother washing it and litter the interior with McDonald's wrappers

    I’ve always heard it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car badly. Put me in a Porsche I’d not have the abilities to push it to limit whith out getting killed, but I think I could have a great time briskly rowing this through the gears in this tiny KIA. Very good review.

  • @deaks25
    @deaks25 Месяц назад +3

    The only disappointment for me is Kia ditched the GT Line S with the 100hp engine, which I saw several reviews of saying it was like an old school baby-Hot-Hatch and a lot of fun. I'm guessing it's gone because of the fine margins in the segment. The Picanto in general is the story of Kia in a nutshell; once the choice of people who didn't care about cars and only cared about budget, but now a genuinely competitive, compelling option.

  • @Class68driver
    @Class68driver Месяц назад +18

    Looked at this as we needed a second small car and to be honest it wasn't great, a poor dealership experience, price was silly for what the car is and the removal of the 99bhp turbo model which we had previously owned and loved is a poor move. We eventually went for an Aygo X which has a better warranty, much better finished interior, looks better externally IMO,but admittedly the same underpowered engine but it was £50 a month cheaper than the Kia. We've had it 3 months now and it's a brilliant car, 68 mpg average for our work runs up the A6, I think it beats the Kia in all areas but each to their own, if we all liked the same life would be boring. Nice video nonetheless 👍

    • @leestockton9367
      @leestockton9367 Месяц назад +4

      Have to agree about the removal of the turbo because it takes a car that used to do 0-60 in just under ten seconds to a car that now does it in over 13 seconds; that's half the fun of owning the car gone!

    This review has an wiff of the top gear second hand challange when they searched what they could buy for the price of a new nissan pixo. To be honest a restaurant near me has a kia picanto as the company car for shopping trips and local deliveries. Everytime I pass it I feel it has 50’s fiat 500 and 60’s mini vibes of a car that is enough. I feel we aren’t grateful for how practical and comfortable small cars have gotten and it’s a shame. When I was younger I was fascinated of the acces Dacia Logan that didn’t even have a stereo, but the thought that you could have a car in it’s purest essence makes you question how much car do you actually need in life? Very enthusiastic review and I can't see why you are getting some shtick in the comments for it. There are some issues I have seen with this though as we were looking for a smaller car to replace an older 208. Went and looked and test drove this (GT-s line) and the Aygo x as well as the Yaris. Unfortunately I hate to say it but none of them tickled the fancy. You do get a lot of kit on them but the 2016 208 with a phone holder just offers such a better experience in my opinion over the insane prices of the new cars today. Couldn't justify the change for us. The price of new and nearly new cars are horrific at the moment.

He didn't say anything negative about it, and lets not forget that Kia provided the car for review, so of course they want only positivity. I think it's also worth mentioning that despite Matt's likeable northerner persona, he sells a course for £27 a month, that's always a red flag.
      Having said that, I do like this new Kia Picanto, and if I were in the market for a new car I'd be very tempted.

    Great video for a great car, Matt. Our second car is a 2009 Chill with the 1.1 64bhp engine, I love driving it, and it is fab around town and country roads/lanes. But you have to boot it all the time to get the best out of it, especially on hills. I would have hoped that the 77bhp would be standard. Our other car, a Škoda, has 86bhp 1.2 turbo, and it is far more flexible and easier to drive. Saving up for another car- will it be another Picanto though? These are totally reliable, and the 7-year warranty is a no-brainer. Well done for promoting, small, ordinary real cars for real people, not egomaniacs.

    The interior looks very similar to my previous shape GT-Line (not S), but strangely in that older model the CarPlay is wireless so it's interesting to hear that's not the case anymore. It's a shame they don't do the 99bhp turbo 1 litre anymore, as that gives a welcome bit of extra power when needed (I'm a weirdo who loves small cars but will take them on arguably unsuitable journeys on holidays to Italy, South of France, Spain etc), but overall I think Kias these days are very well built cars offering a quality that feels like it's from a tier above. Really, these should easily fulfil the needs of a large number of motorists.

    Matt, great video yet again. They are a good little car for the city but, you won't see any of them in rural Australia, the fuel tank range won't get you to the next pub in some areas.
    I did an exercise on price comparison UK vs Aus. You said the GT-Line with the 1.2L engine was GBP15,595+1,200=GBP16,795. At today's exchange rate, that equals AUD32,930. However, the stated new car price for exactly the same specs (even same colour - the Sporty Blue is a $520 premium option in Aus) available on dealer's showroom floor in Melbourne today is AUD24,010 = GBP12,245. That is the drive away price that also includes registration (road tax) and compulsory 3rd party insurance. That is a massive GBP4,500 difference. I am a retired car industry veteran and used to doing these price comparisons and I have double checked everything. There were a few other 'dealer demos' priced slightly higher due to accessories and after market add-ons. The highest price was AUD27,000 (GBP13,765) still a GBP3,000 difference below the UK base price.
    I can only think that the cost difference is in getting the car from the KIA Denhee plant in South Korea to Australia is that much less than getting it all the way to the UK. The other factor is you have a 20% VAT, Aus has a 10% GST paid to the Federal Govt (same thing, diff name - Goods & Services Tax) and we also have a 4% stamp duty paid to the various State Govts on car sales. All of that is included in the prices I quoted above. Price will vary slightly from State to State due to different Stamp Duty rates.
    In Aus, the 1.2L GT-Line engine is rated at 62Kw or 83bhp almost 34% above the base 1.0L which would make a big difference to responsiveness and performance..
    Finally, KIA are well known in Aus for spending a lot of time (up to 6 months) testing pre-production pilot cars here getting the suspension right on demanding Australian roads.

      @@RobNMelbourne I live in Australia too and noticed the big difference in prices compared to UK. You will find similar differences with VW Golf and many others. Whilst many Australians complain about the price of new cars in Australia, we don’t really know how well off we are. Cheaper petrol in Australia also makes motoring a lot cheaper than UK. Plus no extra taxes or restrictions for driving in large cities.

Think of the moon drifting away from Earth, it was that sort of slow. I tried to overtake something on the North Circular Road and it would have been quicker to get the bus! If floor the pedal in my Jogger it will fly, the Picanto sought of went "Oh, If I must". Well built though and looks good but at 6'0" I found it a bit of a squeeze. I think it's the cheapest car in the UK beating the Dacia Sandero.
