  • This short video shows a typical ILS approach in a business jet.
    The weather was good, but one should always fly a standardized, stable approach with call outs.
    The video was taken on a ferry flight from Europe to the USA.
    The CJ3+ is equipped with Tamarack winglets that offer a significant increase in range.
    Enjoy short slide show at the end shows photos.
    Your comments and suggestions are always highly appreciated.
    Happy Landings,
    Capt. Guido

    Dead-center perfect as always. Wasn't aware that it had no thrust reverse. Happy to see more frequent posts from you recently!

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +5

      Thank you Larry.
      I try to get more videos up in 2024.
      They got away with the thrust reversers because of the weight savings.
      The small jets are very weight critical. Out of 15,000lb take of weight you might have 800lb payload, the rest is fuel.
      A trust reverser weights around 100lb per side, so it is significant.
      Wheel brakes are good now, but on wet runways it's critical. Most critical is pilot error, too high speeds on approach and late touch down.
      Runway overrun is a major cause of accidents in these aircraft.
      in the simulator, we are specifically trained on that matter, you touch don behind the touch down zone - you fail the check ride.
      An example of bad piloting here:

      Thank you - muito obrigado.
      The jet had less than 30 hours on the clock - almost new.
      The Citation CJ3+ is very easy to land: they have a trailing link landing gear with a good geometry.
      Not all Citation Jets have this. The C560 I have flown before is much more difficult to land smooth.
      A safe landing is nice for the pilot's ego and for the passengers. What really counts is a safe approach and a controlled, safe landing with a touch down at correct speed at the touch down zone.

      I never flown in the Musketeer but in a Sierra once. I was impressed by the workmanship of the aircraft - not comparable with Cessna and Piper - and also with the stability in flight. The trailing link gear makes greaser landings a standard.

    Wow, nice, Captain Guido! The CJ and CJ1 have thrust attenuators, but not the CJ3 or CJ3+. Why did Cessna stop that? Do you notice much difference? So it's a N tail number that you ferried from Europe? How did it end up there? Nice G3000! Happy landings and congrats on another great video!

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thrust attenuators became obsolete with the FADEC controlled engines in the “+” models and the M2. These allowed to spool down the ground idle rpm by another 5% or so and reduced residual idle thrust.
      About any commercial aspects of the ferry: why, who etc… I’m not at liberty to give out information.

    Hi Guido, do the after-market winglets increase range by much from the standard aircraft?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +2

      I have only limited experience (one long range ferry flight Europe to USA).
      I flew one leg from CYYR to KBGR non stop (!) against a headwind and still landed with 1000lb of fuel. That was 2,061 air nautical miles (no wind condition calculation).
      That was with long range power setting. I would estimate a real 15% increase in range. That may safe you some fuel stops.
      I do not know the cost of installation of the Tamarack wingless, but it is not cheap.

    Ground flaps? Are they only used on the ground after landing?
    If so do they act similar to spoilers spoiling lift?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +1

      Only for the use on the ground. Small speed brakes on the top of the wing are also extended with the ground flaps. The aircraft is certified to fly with the ground flaps deployed (barely) and the max speed is 140 KIAS. There is a safety switch in the power lever. If you advance the power, the ground flaps retract. It is part of the taxi checks to verify the function.

    Question, with flying so many types and classes, how do you prepare the SOPs you will follow on a given flight. I mean sure you have the POH checklists but do you just follow those during flight or do you studying them and prepare some SOPs before flight for each type or class?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +2

      You have a good point here.
      Actually the types I fly are not that many:
      1) the Citation CJ Jets
      2) the King Air
      3) The Cessna Caravan, small and B
      Seldom some Piper Meridians.
      The aircraft within the groups are very similar.
      Biggest challenge is actually managing avionics. All King Airs basically fly the same way but between a 1980 King Air B90 and a 2023 B360 there is a huge difference in the avionics. Luckily I have flown all avionics setup imaginable so I Gert along. But of cute you are sometimes rusty if you have not used a specific GPS brand for some years.
      Before a ferry flight commences, I familiarize myself thoroughly with the aircraft and the equipment. Sometimes it helps to talk to pilots who have previously flown that specific airplane "is there anything special I need to know?".
      And of course the checklist helps.
      I see pilot flying small airplanes without checklists. I would not be able to fly without errors when not using a checklist.
      Thanks for your valuable comment.

    If you turn off the autopilot with the pitch trim, then what is the red button for?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад

      With the pitch trim, you turn the autopilot off. The yaw damper stays engaged.
      Before landing you switch the yaw damper off with big red button.
      The "BRB" big red button, as we call it, also interrupts the pitch trim. This is important to know in case you have a trim runaway (an uncommanded movement of the pitch trim).
      You certainly heard of the 2 accidents in the B737MAX.
      You have to react VERY quick.
      This is why the red button is big ("BRB") and in reach of the left thumb as you normally flight with the left hand on the left seat.
      Note on the right seat, the red button is on the right side of the yoke as you fly normally with the right hand from that seat.
      These are the little details that make aviation so interesting - always something to learn.
      I recommend to have the hand on the yoke at least below 1,500ft above the ground to be ready if a pitch trim runaway occurs.
      Greetings to Hungary & Happy Landings,

    What‘s bleed off speed?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +2

      This means to reduce the speed.
      I called the approach "stable" which should be within 20 knots of the Vref reference speed for landing.
      I was knowingly faster than that so I called out for the speed reduction. You have to mentally ahead of all action sin the cockpit, especially when single pilot. It is east to make mistakes.
      You want to cross the threshold at Vref, which is 30% above the stall speed for the current landing weight.
      If you zoom in I was at 114 knots and the Vref (there is a small greed dot in the airspeed indicator) is around 92. As a lot of fuel is burned off on the long flight from Vienna and I was the only occupant in the aircraft, landing weight was low as was the Vref. There is a difference of 15-20 knots in Vref between a light aircraft and a landing at max alining weight.
      I knot speed over Vref leads to a 100ft longer landing distance, 10 knots is already 1000 feet extra. Runway overruns are one of the main accident factors in these light jets without thrust reverser. You can operate these jets from small airports with only 3,500ft runway - but no room for error.
      You calculate the Vref speed from a table or, very convenient, the G3000 computer calculates it for you automatically. It knows your take off weight from your entries before and subtracts the fuel burn which is also logged -> predicted landing weight.

      It is a Garmin InReach, which I use for text communication in flight.
      Very useful.
      Does it affect the magnetic compass? Certainly it does.

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jay,
      The light jets are very weight critical.
      A 15,000lb jet may have a payload of only 800lb with full fuel.
      Thrust reversers weigh around 100lb each, so they got rid of them.
      Good wheel brake system help but runway overruns are still a cause of accidents on the small jets. Especially on a wet or contaminated runway.

    what is the point of extending the ground flaps setting right after touch down? also, serious question: do u leave the cockpit to use the bathroom at cruise? or how does that work?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад +1

      The jet touches down at Vref, which is 30% above the stall speed of the aircraft.
      That is fast and the wings still produce a lot of lift. That also means that there is less weight on the tires for braking action.
      Hence we want to extend the ground flaps right after touch down. With the ground flaps also the speed brakes on top of the wing are extend. These are much smaller than the ground spoilers on larger jets.
      On larger jets, the deployment of the spoilers is automatic, triggered by a weight on wheel switch if the aircraft settles down on the runway.
      Regarding bathroom, here my solution:
      www.amazon.com/Travel-John-66911-TravelJohn-Disposable-Urinal/dp/B000NV878S/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=616863264372&hvdev=c&hvlocint=9002004&hvlocphy=9044437&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=7783154096188488084&hvtargid=kwd-12360263&hydadcr=24664_13611849&keywords=travel+john&qid=1704577574&sr=8-2&th=1&psc=1

It's not like you are type rated on a single airliner, you regularly switch between one aircraft (e.g. the C208) and a few days later you're flying something completely different, as in this CJ3. Thanks Guido, always something new to learn, (ground flaps/winglets) great video.
    I looked up the Tamara winglets as I recalled an incident regarding them. It looks like that was all resolved and a good system, you have to be aware of the flight manual insert for abnormal events.
    You seem to be qualified on so many different aircraft, it must make the job more interesting and hard to stay current.
    Is there a large community of pilots doing what you do?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад

      You are very welcome Neil.
      There was/is a controversial discussion about the Tamarack winglets. I personally think it is a great system that enhances the aircraft performance.
      As it is part of the flight controls (ailerons), it has to be used with caution.
      The ferry pilot community is very small, it is a specialized niche in the aviation industry.
      To stay current on the aircraft is expensive, I budget around $35,000 for training per year. Also as a self-employed pilot I do not earn any money while on training.
      But training is essential for flight safety.
      My motto: train like you fly and fly like you train.

      I got my first PPL at CYXE and added ratings at CYHU and the now closed Buttonville.
      Canada is a great country for flying.
      Ground flaps help to slow down the aircraft. In a jet you touch down at Vref, which is 30% above the stall speed. So the wing produces still a lot of lift and the ability of the wheel braking is degraded.

    What were the flaps at during the approach? I would think to lift the flaps after touchdown would help reduce lift and keep the plane on the ground but I guess the agressive 60 degree angle help slow it down?

    • @GuidoWarnecke
      @GuidoWarnecke  8 месяцев назад

      Great question!
      The concept in jets is different than in light aircraft like a C172. A C172 touches down (ideally) at stall speed. The jet touches down at Vref, which is 1.3x the stall speed. That is fast.
      So still a lot of lift on the wing. The ground flaps produce a lot of drag and at the same time destroy lift by stalling the wing. Additionally, with the ground flaps, the speed brakes on top of the wing are deployed automatically.
      Raising the flaps will not have the same effect. I also discourage raising the flaps in light aircraft. Raise the nose on roll out and use aerodynamic braking. Also the brakes in light aircraft do not have anti-skid, so you may lock up the wheels quickly.
      The whole system is not as good as airliners which automatically deploy huge lift dump spoilers on top of the wing on touch down and additionally have thrust reversers to slow down.
      Happy Landings,
      Capt. Guido
