It’s worth noting that Nintendo really does focus on fun, immersion, and joy in all of their games. It is the great equalizer-the approach that is the most inclusive and the most profitable. Nintendo didn’t become the richest company in Japan because they catered exclusively to one demographic. Their console sales and first-party game sales are evidence enough that DEI is not the right approach to bring gamers together.

An early and quite reliable tilt sensing method was a mercury switch. Use in toys a little dubious unless area reinforced or surrounded by breakaway tabs or both and flooded in silastic. And perhaps even then.

Being older I have nostalgia for the PC games of old (think they called them computer games on Amazon). Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, there were so many treasures for gamers to play, and I can still remember the sound of the doors sliding open in Wolfenstein, the bark of the guards, the sound track and secret rooms. Games were fewer back in the day and very expensive - but disks came with slick instruction booklets including background on enemy types and controls.
Still have the old games, even though I cannot play them on anything - I also have floppy disks for the older games.
I didn’t know there were peripherals back in the PS1 days, the PS3 was my first gaming console. I do remember eagerly awaiting delivery of the PC gaming magazines each month, that included free demo disks with free levels of the upcoming computer games, sometimes entirely free games. The articles from gaming journalists had to do with gameplay, visuals, story - and how the games ran and which was the best PC system for the games.
Did big corporations or activists divide journalists and players beyond repair?
Some of your gaming peripherals are wild! - like my old computer games I wonder if they’d function today if your PS1 still worked? Thankfully both independent and indie studios remind me there’s still hope for gaming. :-)

I get your frustrations because recent AAA games have been completely allergic to innovating in gameplay but you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Both are vital to selling the overall experience and need to be planned to work together from the start. For example, Fire Emblem has to start working on new character designs from day one because a huge part of the appeal is playing matchmaker with them and the systems are balanced around you never wanting to lose a single unit. And I bet the Doom gameplay designers had their walls plastered with concept art of Doomguy being cool and going "how do we make the player feel like that?" Then when you drill down into the mechanics themselves, the way they're presented to the player can completely make or break them because they need to be quickly understood, even if they're complicated, especially if they're complicated, in order for the player to start making meaningful gameplay decisions with them and to make them work well within the experience. There's tons of old stories of mechanics playtesting poorly and getting "rebalanced" with new graphical or audio effects and then everyone loves them.

@@holdenhodgdon3756 For reference, I hate soulslike hard precise gameplay and my favorite games are all story-heavy with casual system (usually fantasy JRPG or turn based mecha)
Here's the thing, not all games need stories. It has to have a world, a setting, but it doesn't need *A* story. The world and setting is part of graphic design, maybe even sound design, but certainly relevant to gameplay.

    • @holdenhodgdon3756
      @holdenhodgdon3756 9 часов назад

@@ZeroXSEED the story isn't dialogue, it is why you are playing the game.
On one end of the spectrum, the "story" of Tetris is to get the highest score you can, while on the other end you have the "story" of the Persona franchise being "real world social issues caused by adults manifest as monsters & the burden of fighting those issues falls onto the next generation (children who are about to become adults)."
It is possible to create a mechanic & then invent a story that fits it, but it is a lot more economical to have the story and then choose the mechanic that fits it.
I.E. if you get in the car and start driving down random streets with no plan, it is possible that you drive by a paint store and get inspired to remodel your bathroom. However it is a lot more economical to walk around your house looking for why you need to leave the house, and decide that you want to remodel your bathroom before you get in the car.
Both situations will end up with a remodeled bathroom, but the first one will have taken a lot longer to get to the point.

I'm very glad you give a very clear and concise descriptor of what you mean when you say DEI or woke. These terms seem to have lost their precise meaning for a group of people, and are rather loosely employed to express feelings some have towards a product.
This then often includes criticisms that may have nothing to do with superficial diversity and the selfishness that comes with that, and people end up not being able to express what exactly they take issue with, or develop an in my opinion often unwarranted dislike of "woke" people who themselves are not at all in favor of forced diversity.

So I got a Reality Quest Glove when I got Xenogears when it was released. My idea was I could play RPG’s (my favorite games) one handed and eat, drink, smoke with the other hand to cut back on interruptions while playing my new favorite games. Didn’t work well honestly but that was my idea for it.

The indie scene is where the fun is. Corporate is mostly boring junk these days.
I'm making my own games for fun as well. Nothing is anywhere near completion, as my games are based on the world of my books, and my books aren't done yet either. My "day job" is getting in the way of progress for me, along with the every day drudgery of life and chores and responsibilities that keep me from my projects. I wish I was in a position to devote more time to my passions.

Killer collection of odd peripherals. The PS1 is my favorite console of all time because formulas weren’t set in stone yet. For better or worse, every game felt like it offered such a unique experience.

It's a problem of funding. They believe they have to chase the big trends in order to secure funding, but the funders also want to include a checklist of DEI/ESG elements. This is the opposite of passion. Can you imagine trying to tell an interesting story by corporate committee? Gaming companies have become allergic to taking risk, ironically making themselves much more prone to failure than they ever imagined. Games take many years to develop. By the time their games come out, the trends they chase will be un-trendy and the gamers will be tired of playing the same tired games. I hear it all the time. "Games feel like a chore now".

Mention of DEI in video games, i think its important for an experienced professional developer like yourself to broach this subject. Many youtubers refuse to acknowledge it even exists and others overdo it and claim its in everything. I think the 'professor' comes from a place of admiration and respect and i will respectfully refrain from referring to you as such based on your request.
One subject i am very interested to know where you stand is in the new Dragon Age. There is clearly DEI elements in it and woke aspects, but some of the gameplay looks promising. I dont want to get my hopes up as im a long time fan of the series but the DEI concerns me. Do you have any thoughts or opinions on this subject?
Respect and admiration, thank you for content

Good day, in case you don't get a reaction may I offer a small suggestion. Recently Sungrand made a video called "We need to talk about Concord" around 2:35 in this video he speaks about DEI from a generic viewpoint. I personally think that how introduces his viewpoint there it would also be applicable to Dragon Age, due to the more overall approach instead of being Concord specific.
Not going to summarize since that may be my interpretation of what was said rather than his opinion which you are seeking. Hope it helps!

South korean games deserve more attention. The higher ups are still greedy af pumping the game full of micro transactions, but they do actually leave their devs alone, the devs have full creative control. Pearl abyss with black desert and their new game looking promising, and inzoi looks like theyre merking sims. Idk if you pay attention to mobile games, ik most ppl write them off but there are some EXTREMELY good mobile games out there coming from sk devs.

oh yeah, love these playful experiemtal things, before we universally settled on what a controller looks like. it´s a bit like in evolution, whenever theres a free niche you get all kinds of wonderful bizarre and weird forms, (they may be somewhat useless and not always fit for purpose, not optimized to perfection but glorious nontheless) and functions trying to fill that niche before brutal efficiency of evolution, or in our case market forces, find the the very few phenotypes that survive.
