    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 5 лет назад +25

      @Richard Bowles
      It was mostly a joke because, as Isaac himself has repeatedly said, fusion has always been touted as something that's just around the corner or "20 years away." And, well, even then the problem has always been commercial fusion reactors that would be cost-beneficial to use. We've had WORKING fusion for decades. It just was a net-loss in the energy produced overall, or not worth utilizing for anything more than research. And given how many advances seem to be increasing as of late in multiple different fields, I think Isaac is also correct when he says that we will probably finally see actual commercial fusion reactors in 20-30 years. Technology is just closing the gap and making it easier to do so.

    I believe the socio-economic system you're describing is called federalism.
    One that has very powerful benefits, as you're describing, but people have seemed for forgotten about in favor of a republic or democracy (by which they mean magically gives them everything they want) or socialism (by which they mean magically gives them everything they want).
    Federalism is choice, almost any other any other system is less choice. The difference between federalism and most nations, is there is more freedom to move and trade between different states. Which requires some treaty to bind them as federalist. (I.e. as the U.S. used to be, or as the Scandinavian states are today.) Since people have differing preferences, they will choose differing governments, so that every system that people want will be represented (aside from systems that dictate everyone comply with the system they want). And every system that doesn't support what the people want will loose citizens to the systems that serve their citizens what they want, depressing their economy and taxes if they have taxes. You could even have a federation of federation, so you have well as having a market of governments, you have a market of treaties binding the governments.
    The only other system I find superior is voluntarism, where the government's aren't locationally bound. So you purchase your government services like you would any other product.

      To be fair, the real sound "en" in "en masse" or "encore" doesn't exist in english, so most of the anglophones can only pronounce those words approximately. That said, the sound "on" without insisting too much on the "n" is probably the best approximation.

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  5 лет назад +3

      you'll actually catch me pronouncing it both ways, as 'en' like 'end' or 'on', same as you'll sometime heear me say kilo as 'kill-ah' or 'kill-oh'. But most Americans in my experience, or at least my area, say 'en' as end, presumably because if misunderstood 'in mass' make more sense than 'on mass
      , and 'en' and 'in' are slightly different sounds. If you're curious, I almost always pronounce things with whichever version I hear folks say the most, often even if it is wrong, precisely because folks with speech impediments who also have to say a lot of more arcane terms routinely don't court any additional confusion with what we say :)

Personally I'm just really glad most of the things you talk about on this channel in terms of problems are things we don't have to worry about in our lifetimes or rather even if we do we can't do anything about such problems with our current technology. Honestly I'm not the type of person who enjoys solving horrifying problems or anything like that. Honestly in terms of privacy everything is already going in a awful direction, and I'm just glad I don't have to worry about insane future privacy concerns. Or you know maybe being hacked cause I'm a cyborg. I mean I would totally become a cybord in order to live much much longer even if I was quite scared about the risks. So I'm glad that I don't really have to face these insane future issues at least most of them in my life. Micro black-holes are much smaller than atoms. Its going to take some seriously precise kit to collide them. If the enemy is off by a nanometer with the relativistic black hole, then they will just fly past each other. Off by as much as a micrometer and the gravitational slingshot effect is negligible.

    • @6ixpool520

      that's because when playing plague inc a lot of people cheat and devolve their mutations. the point isn't to lay low and slaughter everyone that's the easy way. the hard way is to ride your mutations like they're a wave and adapt to new situations. try this instead for the virus, do everything you can to increase your mutation chance in the transmission and abilities tab, and see if you can win without devolving a single symptom. Eventually you get a death spiral.

    it seems that the biggest threat is extremism in any form, and yes that includes not falling into the trap of 'avoiding extremism by all means necessary' which is extreme in and of itself. In that light, heated debates are reassuring while unanimous decisions are unsettling.
    if we take that one step further, there may be a situation where there's an eternal struggle on the surface and all the parties are paranoid about each other, but deep down everyone's glad about the balance and that no one single party is conclusively winning. in short, there can be no winner - the only 'winning' solution is to keep the game in play.

    • @wbiro
