just watched the film & found your commentary. highly agree with everything that you said. it's probably one of the greatest films of all time, especially because it manages to talk about art, food, classism, love, the fleeting nature of life in such a surreal & realistic way, that too in just 2 hours. it's mind blowing.

A great commentary on a truly great film. Thank you. I do love the ramen master: he may be "over-the-top," but he is a good reminder of the need to appreciate what we stuff into our faces, usually unthinkingly. Cheers from the UK!

Well said - one of my top five movies ever. The first night I saw it (back in 1989!), it inspired me to try out the 'sharing a yolk' scene with my boyfriend - though all we had was a Cadbury's Creme Egg! Whenever I find my mind wandering back to scenes from this film, I know I'm trying to tell myself something, even if it's just 'Keep trying. Don't give up'. I doubt I'm telling myself to break out the live prawns and brandy, but who knows?

I love the spaghetti scene, having joy in the whole experience of eating. You used to be able to see Juzo Itami movies fairly regularly on British tv's. Also a big fan of A Taxing Woman.
