    y’all y’all y’all!!! i am not saying whether romanticization (of an art student or not) is good or bad!!! i’m simply analyzing some aspects of the idea!! stuff is morally grey okay 🤒🤒 there is not a “right” or “wrong” here because it depends entirely on the context and people!!

    I graduated from art school years ago before youtube vlogs were as popular as they are today - and while I loved my time as a student, reflecting back on it my experience was mostly just sleepless nights and feeling overwhelmed (side note - the normalization of killing yourself over art assignments is... bad). I think your critique can be applied to RUclips and social media in general - we only see the highlight reel of anyone's life when they post. I find it interesting though that art vlogs follow this same trend when art is an open space to reflect on lived experiences, even the less glamorous parts (or maybe the ones that don't just get ignored by the algorithm).

      I've noticed the normalization of literally sacrificing your health to do an assignment recently too!! It's all so productivity focused and it's definitely unhealthy. Thank you sm for your perspective!!

      This. I remember loving my college years but also wondering if the shakes I had during 75% of my time there were from worrying about my assignments or slamming a full pack of Red Bull to finish them in time.

      There's this book by Elizabeth Gilbert that has a chapter on artist living...it addresses the artist in despair ego... like how we view suffering and barely coping to be apart to artistic living... it's pretty good...the book is called Big Magic

    when i first got into art, i definitely wanted the label “art student” because i felt like it would make people value me more, or look at me as “more” of an artist. now i have clear goals for wanting to work in the concept art industry and i’m going to art school to further my understanding of art on a level i couldn’t achieve by self-study. definitely make sure you’re going to school for the right reasons.

    Ah yes, someone finally said it. Not that some people aren't doing great work but I've grown so tired of seeing that aesthetic when i know how stressful that time actually was (sleepless nights and feeling helpless knowing you could do better if you just had a little more time) and as a graduate i can now say to those still continuing their studies to hang in there, you will get where you need to be just not overnight. As a student you will get stressed, you will get overwhelmed - art school is no different; that is, at least while you're trying to make something of yourself. There's plenty you're going to be made to do that you don't want to just like many of you were doing when you were going through grade/high school. Romanticizing art in the way aesthetics do lies and can convince people to continue along a path they don't really want to take. It only makes it more painful when they realize they have to give it up after so much time. But just like other paths, it's a career and may not be for everyone. It doesn't mean that people can't be very successful artists (an opinion that's rapidly becoming more and more outdated with the rise of more digital media/programs).

      these are honestly all great points!!! so happy to hear the perspective of someone who has graduated form the school system. even though i did wonder if i was trying to pursue art academically because of certain idealized perceptions i came to realize i care more about doing it for the sake of doing it but that may not be the case for everyone!

    It’s funny I see this when I change my major from graphic design to fine arts lol. I remember when this aesthetic first started forming, and I got so much conflicting advice. It was either “Do what you love” or “You’ll end up hating it anyways.” In the end though, I learned that the only thing that matters is what you really want. Many people want a lot of different things from you so that you can look “cool,” but I learned that the one thing to do in life is listen to yourself most.

    • @lemongacha
      @lemongacha  3 года назад +7

      definitely agree with the advice!!! it's so difficult to hear your own voice when so many people have input, whether needed or not. I'm glad you're figuring out your path!!

      wow, really love the last sentence. People always think i'm crazy or something from wanting to do Bachelor's in Design and not Bachelor's in Technology/Engineering, they would say stuff like "put your interests and aspirations aside and just do 4 years of B.Tech and do anything you want after B.Tech... i"m like wtf... i atleast didn't say i wouldn't go for Uni, i'm just saying i'm going to a "Bachelor's" but in something else and they just don't get it lol.
      I just learnt to pity people for the limited view on life, and the amount of resources this generation has,lol.

    I also think about this so often as an art student. why did i study art? is it really because it's the thing i love to do and because of my dream of impacting others life positively with it? or because everyone always saw me as "the art kid"? Even so, i like to think my perception of myself is the one i treasure the most. And i do, in fact, see myself as the art kid, too, but i also think of me as someone who can be of someone's help.
    keep it up with your videos, i love them so much!!

      @lemongacha  3 года назад +6

      i love your view on this!! i was always seen as “the art kid” too, even if it wasn’t super obvious (we are all multifaceted, of course) i felt like it was a major definer for me. i’m so happy you’re prioritizing your own perspective!! & thank you 🥺🥺

    • @baizhuwaitingroom7057
      @baizhuwaitingroom7057 3 года назад +3

      I love art, but part of me didn't want to study it for the longest time precisely because I've always been "the art kid", and my family thought I'm meant to be an artist ever since I remember. It made me feel like choosing to study art wouldn't be my own decision, but rather submitting to what others wanted me to do, fulfilling their vision of how I should live my life.
      My grandpa loves art too, and before that his father did as well. Neither of them had pursued official education in art, but my great grandpa had his own little tome of poetry printed, and my grandpa used to lead a local theatre troupe. They also drew and painted. On top of that both he and my grandma did some off-side one time art commissions, as far as I know. He had his expectations set in stone for me, and I really hated it. I ended up studying art anyway (although I tried going in a completely different direction at first, but failed), and it made me feel bittersweet, because on one hand it was one of the best experiences in my life and it allowed me to finally meet like-minded people, but on the other hand I felt defeated, like I wasn't in control, like it was the only thing I could do and I wasn't able to escape my fate and I was fullfiling someone else's ambitions. It took me a lot of effort to come to terms with that, that it was *my* independent choice and I was doing it for myself, not because others tried to dictate what's "best for me". Usually artists deal with unsupportive families that want them to get "a real job", but I guess the other extreme isn't really a better alternative either.

    I absolutely agree with you! I also was scared that I just romanticized the art student life and that I just listen to the people who call me the "art kid". Because I was overthinking that all the time, I just applied for an internship for design (illustration, graphic). I completed my week today in which I had to work as every other employee there and I am now sure that it is what I wanna do!
    (Ofc a week is not a lot but it actually made me even more excited to pursue that career and made feel like I have a purpose)

    Im an art student myself and ive overheard several conversations w my fellow art students abt making “aesthetic” vlogs and such and i, myself, watch such content. Although i can never see myself making them myself mostly due to me being a private person but also because yeah, just having this romantic still life frames of your life isnt really what i want to put out in the world. Having all these pretty pictures of what being an art student is supposed to be, skews the whole experience of it. A lot of people aren’t fortunate enough to be an art student, heck a lot of art students ive met arent fortunate period. And it can feel disheartening to have all these amazing experiences that seemingly have been a stereotype that ur supposed to fit in when u cant. I know that a lot of the art student content isnt really meant to be malicious in any way like that but its kind of an issue nonetheless. So thanks for some sort of opening in regards to this issue :DD

      honestly!! i want to make vlogs too and of course the people who do don't have any ill intent (like you said), honestly most of us probably just want to document our lives to look back on. definitely the issue lies in both the perception of the audience and how the creator is portraying the experience... AGH anyway, thanks so much for your perspective!!!

    I think that just by filming an art journey, it becomes unavoidably asthetic. I thought it is super asthetic and it looks super professional to watch the artist's hand draw something on paper. It just looks so intentional and it smells of selfconfidence. Then when I made a video like that (livestream) it automatically looked like that too. You might feel like a loser, who just wants to get their assigments done but on came it unavoidably looks cool. I looked at my drawing hand through the lense and thought: "wow I look so professional"
    I think that vloggers might of course go a little extra to film asthetically but I think most of it is already unintentionally looking super cool, dreamy and admireable

    Um...I don't know if this goes with the topic but...I never studied art...well if 2 months of art class in school counts( although all I learned was how to draw a "perfect circle" and " a sunset) well then yes, I studied art. What I want to say is...I always liked art ever since I discovered it, and well, with the little that I had and knew back then (which was basically a 1% of knowledge) I tried to draw and paint. It was not pretty ( obviously since I did know what I was doing lol) but my family kept telling me that although I never took proper classes I was doing a great job. Anyways, the thing is i stopped because of school, and well lest say that after like 11 years or more, this 2021 is when I decided to get back at it now that I had money to buy all you need for painting. So I did, I looked up some tutorials and even asked for what supplies I should buy on youtube, and learned a few things along the way. I went to amazon and bought some acrylics, gouache, the sketchbook, paintbrushes and you know, all you need to paint. I started and as logical, I was not good because I still didn't know that well what I was doing, then got the hang of it and can say now that I have my sketchbooks almost full and have some decent paintings, but when I started to look at painters on youtube and saw their painting and how the projected that life of a painter through the lens, I began having sooo much trouble painting, destroyed sooo many pieces and got so discouraged because I felt that if I didn't learn fast enough to paint like them or at least do a decent paint I was never going to be a painter and there was no point for me to keep dreaming; I forgot that the real reason to why I paint is because I truly love art! that I paint not for people to like it, not for anyone to like it but for me, because that's what I like. when I painted I thought it was a youtube video and that I needed to do a perfect job or I would get judged by people telling me how ugly I painted. it affected me but now I'm learning to do things because I like it ignoring other's opinions and have become more freely when I paint. I don't know if this adds up to your topic, probably not I just wanted to say it... :)
    btw, absolutely love your paintings and agree with all you've said.

      I felt this! I always feel discouraged and disappointed quickly when I see that my art isn't good, when I just started learning the basics. I quit drawing bc of school and my parents, and my mental health as well. But since I got a new tablet, I have been drawing in it and properly learning to draw the human body.
      What you said made me realised I took people's words too seriously and never focused on what I wanted. And I want to keep practising bc I love art so much

    this discussion is really interesting, I tend to romanticize a little what I do, coming from a developing country is disappointing how people don't really value art, and i knew that when I got in, so I kind of tell myself that what I do is important, we just don't have to be too "dreamy"

    • @lemongacha
      @lemongacha  2 года назад

      nothing wrong with that at all!!! romanticization can be really great when trying to grapple with how you value art vs. your environment that tends not too. wishing you the best with your work! it is important :))

  • @chocolateicecreamlove8823
    @chocolateicecreamlove8823 3 года назад +15

    I'm not an art student but I could not agree with this more. I tried to take an art course last year but it just wasn't for me. I work better in my own environment. I'm a self taught artist for abt the last 4 years trying to make a name for myself and a small business which I hope can become a thing soon!!
    I see so many beautiful videos of people's painting process and how their stationary looks and the colors they use and when they go pick up new supplies...and it made me think that I needed to do the same. It's very popular and ppl are attracted to it indeed. I'm not a filmmaker though and don't have good equipment for smth like that at all XD But it sometimes paints the wrong picture. I don't have a stationary myself per say. I have just taken over our dining table and have my art supplies random places cause I don't got the space! But to be "a real artist" I felt like I had to have what everybody else have too to earn that title. I get frustrated with my paints sometimes or when I suddenly feel like I cannot draw, or the tiredness from working on smth for wwaayy too long. There's painted this picture, no pun intended LOL, that just an art process is aesthetic and beautiful and peaceful and calm, but that isn't always the case. If you wanna do art well you also gotta build a skillset. Anatomy, landscaping, etc. And that can get frustrating too. So yeah....that was my long perhaps very random speach that was maybe a bit too much but I hope it's not and I hope you know that I find your art really pretty and I liked the video XD

    • @lemongacha
      @lemongacha  2 года назад +1

      i had the same experience when i was first starting to take art more seriously!! i'd watch tons of videos and make notes of the supplies the artists were using and beg my parents to buy some for me (in particular: copic markers). i had this weird idea that i wouldn't be able to create "good" work if i didn't have the best materials. now i've come to learn that the skills and the ideas are the most important, that materials are just the tools you use to carry your imagination out. i'm hoping we can both continue growing as artists!!! and thank you!!!

    honestly this whole topic is so great! (im gonna ask this question in my english class isnce we talk about philosophy and im a big fan myself)
    I enjoy the idea of this topic becuase so many people either wanna do art or like the idea or art or like the idea of being a 24/7 coffee addicted cafe artist and whatnot,
    I 'd like to think this also stems from the idea of the great depression where many artists during that time suffered ehich probably goes into that idea of social media expecting what an artist "should be"
    sometimes the question of "are you doing it because you like the idea of it or are you doing it because you enjoy it" etc etc pop up for many like in cottage core, dark/light acadamia, and so on because people love the idea of let's say "working in a pretty dress in a land so far away!" however they also may not like the other realization of "waking up at 5am/6am doing chores milking cows preparing and whatnot"
    its the same question that can be applies to everything and out identities because we are trying to figure ourselves out as people still ( i mean look at me i still struggle lmao and cant make decisions n whatnot)
    i also like to think that becuase art is becoming popular due to rising in tiktok of last year, then also having many tutorials nowdays that are so easy to find just by a click of a button
    I simply think that as art does begin to become popular i also make decisions about what type of art I like
    and because i fell in love with art specifically the versatility and how people make pieces or designs honestly I want to learn all of the differenty type of arts and im still trying becuase i just think its what makes me happy the same with acadamia having to revolve with the idea of philisophical ideas and whatnot
    man sorry for the long reply!! but lastly study youtube videos also struggle the same with romanticization because of the cafe idea too and maybe it's me but because study youtubers almost share the same thing with artists in its own way, usually they tend video tape ourselves for show to the world
    but then from my pov it seems that overbuying is something we both tend to do while also putting on an "aesthetic filter" or rose colored glasses as they never really show the pain that goes through with studying and doing art (and i mean pain as in the idea people look up to us as )
    sometimes it makes me wonder if people ever almost lost their identity becuase of their reasoning for doing something that they could either enjoy or are passionate about
    for example it could easily be a reasoning, value, etc etc but i mean i know we wnt through that last year which i think art is a way of direction for some people when they can't exactly do or find what they want and so on!
    SORRY FOR THE RAMBLING BUT YEAH PEOPLES COMMENTS AND INPUTS ARE INTRESTING!!

      NO don't apologize for rambling!!! I love to hear other people's perspectives! also omg let me know what your class thought if you do :)))
      I never considered the historical aspect of the whole idea, so that's definitely something to consider! The whole "suffering for your art" idea really made it seem like you had to go through the pain (and it was even glamorized) to create art.

    As someone who makes art videos, and is planning to double major in art, I definitely find myself falling into this trap- I want to make everything look pretty and peaceful, even if the actual process was neither pretty nor peaceful. However, cinematography has become part of the artistic process for me, or at least an expression of myself as much as the art is. I enjoy finding the beauty in little moments. Maybe because we’re artists, we tend to over idealize our lives and “show off” the beauty, which leads to an idealized lens because crying over a painting and greasy hair isn’t pretty.

      Making this type of content is fine and all.. but I feel like if you consume too much of it you will inevitably feel like a failure in comparison. It's so hard to keep level headed these days. Everyone is blasting their best work at you and most of them are years ahead of you. But that's something you conveniently ignore when you compare yourself.

    Amazing commentary! It puts into perspective why there are so many defensive sentiments among people dedicated to the arts ("Don't call me talented, I'm a hard worker!" comes to my mind), and it's because of the ease this romanticization forms; as you said it best, "people already form an opinion as they see the art", bypassing anything the person might say on the matter.
    Something odd that also happened recently to me is how, even after graduating from art school long ago and seeing such things with healthy distance, I got cagey over the possibility of being valued as "artist" rather than "person" anyway; watching this helped parsing out why, serving as humbling reminder that creators have to grapple with this romanticization from others even past art school (reflected especially in the poverty wages in certain industries).
    Tl;dr: got some observations of how this plays out even past the "art student" label, hope it didn't derailed that much from the original topic!
    (I remember how it was to be a student and it was a series of beating myself up for not fulfilling romanticized expectations, but on the flipside it's much easier to see the filtering as a purposeful choice, instead of an indication of value.)

      i used to be so sensitive about being called talented vs. skilled for the exact reason!! it felt a bit like nobody was acknowledging the hard work and brushing my work off as "she's just a natural" when the opposite is true.

    I loved this video, the commentary was very interesting to listen to and think about ! I’m not really in the art world, I’ve never thought about going to art school or becoming an artist but I love watching art content and just painting for myself. But I think this idea is completely applicable to the fitness world also (and kind of every type of content I think), romanticizing spending your life at the gym and controlling what you eat etc. I think I’ve been guilty of even making the gym my personality and being desperate to be recognized as the gym rat / fit girl to the point where I almost lost my genuine love for working out when the results were not as clear to other people.

This is definitely true as an art student it’s not all rainbows and ponies, spending hours every day/week creating work trying to meet deadlines, losing sleep etc, it’s only the second week of school and I already have finished an art project and am starting another one. very exhausting, and on top of that we’d have tests and assignments in other classes like geometry,english, french, etc.

    this video honestly hit me quite hard. i started my illustration/animation course in an art school in september 2019, about 6 months before the world went into lockdown and my aesthetic little art school dream life got shelved to be online for a full year and a half. i spent so much of that time angry and upset that i want getting the romanticized art school experience i signed up for after watching countless art studio vlogs on youtube, but looking back, my art improved an incredible amount during that time spent inside. i'm now in my third year of uni, and only just getting back to irl classes. and it /still/ doesn't match the glamorized aesthetic of the artfully messy, aesthetically pleasing life of an art student that i thought id have, but i'm not angry about that anymore. art school is really just like any other uni/college once you get used to it. it's good to have realistic expectations. you'll have disagreements with professors, you'll have to carry annoyingly boring group projects, you'll have to work your ass off the night before an important exam and want to drop out. that doesn't mean it's not an incredibly fun experience, but you should always check if you're signing up for an art school for the right reasons.

    As a freshman I put so much pressure to romanticize my art college experience because I wanted to milk it for what it was worth. But then I had the realization that I was lonely, had no friends, I never had the privilege to do art classes growing up to be the next prodigy in my school, and being outcasted wether it was on campus or in class, it had been hard enough. I give up trying to fit in and searching for an idealized version of myself because in the end it was all just pressure to fit in and not what I want. These romanticized college blogs of art schools will never explain the hardships and traumas you will face in college, giving many hopes that they could live the same life because that was me.I suffered through harsh critiques and was isolated in my classes, further leading me to realize this “experience” is just pain and nothing happy about it to be romanticized

    Great perspective. I myself being someone who graduated as a business student and changed majors to fine arts now, have a lot of times wondered if i was doing something wrong because i wasn't painting 24hrs a day and sleep depriving, and still dreading those assignments. But now, i have come to realise that my journey is purely my own and i am allowed to not be ok and perfect all the time. At one point, i was losing the original intention to pursue art because i thought i wasn't doing it right. Though it is vastly different for me now, i hope more people knew little clips on social media doesn't reflect your mental and physical state. Now in this lockdown, i have started getting good habits which will be beneficial for my well being and set my schedule, it revolves around art but not to the point that i don't do anything else. And seriously, taking care of myself has also resulted in huge improvement in my art.

      i'm currently a business major too!! i ended up adding a second major in the arts but i definitely understand the struggle with the arts route specifically. when you're under pressure it's so difficult to channel creativity and work at the same time. i'm really happy you've made progress in healing/re-examining your passions!!! we love to see healing and setting reasonable goals!!

    seeing this in my recommended is def not a coincidence lol but finally. someone finally said it !! i agree w your critique, and it can also be applied to other media, imo. as an art student, i just wanted to say that i get jealous (although very rarely) whenever i see art vlogs and the artist is seemingly having a stress free time since (in my case) i was overworked, overwhelmed and sleep-deprived 90% of the time bc of the plates i had to submit, and their deadlines were almost all on the same day. i got too overwhelmed that i took too many breaks from my art school, which set me back a year or more behind my peers. but then i remembered that hey, it's just a highlight reel and it will show all the pretty parts. but art itself is supposed to be a form of expression, whether it's 'aesthetically pretty' or otherwise. i'm rambling, but i am so glad that your video found its way to my recommended.

      @lemongacha  2 года назад +1

      ahhh i'm sorry to hear that your experience was so stressful!! i'm glad that you were able to take breaks (though they must've seemed inevitable and discouraging at the time) but i definitely agree!! i've had phases where i just want my own experiences in art to be like the ones i see on youtube... just gotta remind ourselves it's edited and doesn't show the whole story!!

  • @figgywoofy1724

    I think a lot of the reason why artists try so hard on social media is because you literally become part of your work. I have realized that art is only part of the equation. You have to sell yourself. In a way your personality is branding for your art. This is more true for fine arts than illustration,games, pop culture artists, and such. But think of people like andy Warhol he sold a lot of art because of who he was. That is why artists sometimes have eccentric personalities because it sells.

    • @lemongacha
      @lemongacha  2 года назад +1

      literally marketing yourself to the masses!!! i’ve definitely noticed that, even outside of the art industry that in order to get a job now is tying yourself to your work and bundling it onto social media

    I loved this video so much because someone finally said it!! I'm in thesis right now, and in the past four years I've seen my classmates go through some of the hardest times of their lives trying to just make it through art school. I love art and I have a love/hate relationship with art school, but it's not this pretty "sit in a cafe and take aesthetics pics" all day (there's nothing wrong with that either!), but it's spending days and nights just trying to make work, trying to come up with concepts, creating and submitting work that you don't like, and the inevitable art block that you have to force yourself out of just to submit things on time.

    • @lemongacha

    Interesting idea. It's always a good point to bring into light that in social media, you're only getting snippets of someone else's life. Edited down only to what they want you to see. Not all of it is intentionally meant to be romanticized but there is definitely a trend.
    It just becomes harder to see those lines when people consume so much on a daily basis from social media and compare themselves. Social media in general, even away from the "art student" archetype has that effect and is changing the way people perceive reality. It's really concerning as we move forward in time, and SMS are the norm, the mainstream way of giving out information.
    It becomes too easy to not see something and believe it doesn't exist. Social media just elevates that. You never know what a person's going through on the other side, no matter what they show on the surface. It's something you always gotta keep in mind and approach life with a lvl of understanding.

For a time in my life I was like 'everything I do needs to be seen otherwise I'm not maximising what it COULD be' - and it's still taking time to try to unlearn that lol. Even as I say it, it sounds like a good idea to post everything I'm doing or to be like 'man I HATED BEING AN ART STUDENT but it LOOKED SO COOL. Then when you go back, it really isn't that cool. I think i’m trying to unlearn it both in my art and personal life T_T like even now I feel like I should post what i’m doing, but to have art for a business online, it can sound like both a great business move to keep followers engaged but also that directly conflicts with keeping yourself happy sometimes.

They fill the vending machines with coffee and energy drinks... no joke. They literally promote sleepless students while draining their bank accounts. Don't get me wrong, I'm privileged and grateful for this education cause the education itself is actually pretty good. The biggest problem about artist aesthetics: most time people are consuming one artists work because of the whole idealization around them.
    They want to believe that this artist passionately crafted this art piece even though it's just a portrait commission from a selfie. That they go to some cool and overpriced cafe or bar only cool and quirky people goes. That their hobby whenever they're not painting is reading poetry in a old yellowish book or something.
    Basically they want to believe that every fucking second of an artists life is filled with idealized passion seeking and cult bohemia.
    And, specially, they want it registered on instagram.
    Aside from this dumb and blind romantization, I absolutely hate how they simply naturalized it, and demand a kind of unpaid 24/7 work so naturally. "You're just posting your idle daily life on Instagram". And if you are not as cool and passionate as they expect, then, you're not an artist at all.
