@@eti401 You are correct, he is talking to the movie theater's customer watching this movie saying that "you are in movie theater too". Then, he says " what's you eating over there".
It's so weird dude he's literally the grandfather of sooo many RUclipsrs careers. I wonder what's it like for him to look around at all the channels he made possible.
Saved my life . 20 years looking for this movie without knowing the name or the name of te director. I partially watch it when i was a teenager and the vignetes shocked me, specially the scene of the dying wife preparing dinner before she passed away !! Now Looking to watch the entire movie.
Did you find it and watch it all yet? Its on amazon and youtube for rent, probably other places too for sure. I watched it about 10 years ago, Forgot the name, but found it right away today just searching: Old Japanese movie about ramen shop
Absolutely beautiful film. This is the one that introduced me to one of my five favorite directors, Itami Juzo. Over the other films I've seen by him, Miyamoto Nobuko became my favorite actor of all time. This is a nice analysis.
Hell yes. This essay makes way more sense than all of the pompous nonsense I’ve heard about this film, all the stuff like “everything is food”. What does that even mean? I don’t think your supposed to even know. The statement is designed not to be understood, but to admire the people who supposedly can understand it. This essay brings the film together in a way that makes tones of sense, and in the spirit of the film itself, makes it accessible to everyday film goers; bringing the theme of food into something that actually makes sense as a device used to push what the film has to say.
This was my first "foreign" movie. I saw it on the late night movie. I was just a kid and so many parts I found hilarious. As I grew up I saw the depth.
Omg, i just realized that i watch this movie when I was kid. I only remember the homeless guy who break in to make yhe most mouthwatering fried rice. I was way too young to remember the mobie bane. I’m because there was a asian restaurant in town name Tempopo.
Wish he would of critiqued Minbo. Or all of his films. Itami Juzo is my favorite Japanese director. Wish there was a criterion collection of all his films!
I'm still so pissed he just picked up and left RUclips. Got his fame and cut his teeth on RUclips. Got his subscriber award, and just split. Where do people even find his essays now? Really lame, sad move. COME BACK!
he didn't leave... the platform left him.... :-/ in the effort of chasing advertisers, youtube's ever slow pace has chased off some of their very best creators. for that i am very sad. :(
I miss him so badly
Still rewatch his videos every few months...
anyone able to translate what the man says at 9:03?
@@JiggywattArt I watched this movie a week ago, it was something along the lines of "Oh you're watching a movie too?"
@@eti401 You are correct, he is talking to the movie theater's customer watching this movie saying that "you are in movie theater too". Then, he says " what's you eating over there".
@@JiggywattArt .. "..that's a movie theater too? (or could be inferred `you're at the movies too I see`). What are you eating?"
I enjoyed your review
Although I previously watched this movie, however after your interpretation I will certainly watch
once again.
Un film FORMIDABLE, que j'ai vu sur la chaine Européenne ARTE, il y a 30 ans...
It is no joke that a chef needs to do cardio.

Wow. A young Ken Watanabe.
I love the truck driver! He's got the quiet confidence that emanates decency and charisma. One of my all-time favorite movies.

I miss Every Frame a Painting and other similar video essays. I took them for granted.
Cooking, sex, action and an almost mystical search for the perfect ramen!
I can't get enough of Tampopo 😎. Merci for this essay.
wish this had subtitles but between Tony, Taylor, and Itami's mastery I still enjoy everything without knowing the dialogue
More reason to give Tampopo another watch :)
Amateur: “one who does something for the love of it alone”
one of the greatest movies ever made!!!!!!
Hi my name is Tony and this is ...
I miss that!...
😄😄😄😄
...Not Every Frame a Painting
Inspiring as always, Tony
For the video essay one of the best movies ever and funniest
It's so weird to see a video by Tony and Taylor and not hear "Hi, my name is Tony, and this is Every Frame a Painting".
Or, to put in modern terms, Tampopo isn't a Mary Sue.
An excellent critique of an excellent film. Arigato!
In my language, "amador" means "one who loves"
watch the movie here: ruclips.net/video/-6pSCTfOFdA/видео.html
Great analysis!
Cute movie but why does it have random nude and gross out scenes?
It’s supposed to show how food can be used, in those two scenes I assume you’re thinking of it’s supposed to show how food can be erotic and sensual.
Because it’s hilarious lol

The thing is I watched it with my parents thinking it's family friendly. 😂

Wonderful essay...thank you!
Great analysis
Great Movie
Japanese humour at it's best.
This is a very Japanese movie. Not only is the themes so readily recognizable to be Japanese, the styles is also very Japanese.
Wow, you are so observant!
wow I love your analysis!
あ と で ね ♡
Why is this not on his YT channel?
because it was for criterion channel
Great movie! Saw it in the 90's!

Some of the intermissions with the director were kinda weird tho, but loved the movie

miss you Tony
伊丹十三って、改めて「名匠」だったなぁ。「お葬式」や「マルサの女」が有名だけど、俺は「タンポポ」が一番好き。出演している役者も一流揃いでキャラが立っていた。また観たくなった(笑)
