    01:20 The notes
    03:18 Correct finger position and how to pluck the strings
    12:11 Scale exercise
    You couldn't be in better hands learning from Lisa as she's won seven All Ireland titles and has been playing since childhood. Get top technique tips and exercises from Irish harp master Lisa Canny - www.oaim.ie/harp/harp-basics/
    Course Synopsis: In this course Lisa Canny clearly guides the novice harp player through the basics of the instrument. The first six lessons focus on the basics; how to tune the harp, using the blades, correct finger positioning and scales, and a couple of simple tunes. When the learner is comfortable with the basics they can progress to lessons 7 - 18 where Lisa teaches six harp classics including Brian Boru’s March, My Lagan Love, Planxty Irwin’s, The Mother and Child Reel, The Little Diamond Polka, and The Rocky Road to Dublin. The right-hand melody is taught separately to the left-hand accompaniment giving the student the choice to play these parts separately or work in time to put them both together. This course is a fantastic choice for both the beginner harpist and the intermediate harpist who wishes to brush up on the basics!

    I’m 72 years old and have been playing the fiddle for the past 20 years. Then, because of arthritis in my hands, I could no longer bend my left index finger. So I quit for a year, thinking I would never play again. During that year, our neighborhood music store went out of business, and was selling everything at very low prices; and I found a “Pixie” harp, which I bought (because I can’t live my life without playing an instrument). I was going to take lessons, but the pandemic hit. So after letting the harp just sit for a long time I finally started with your lessons. I will take a long time to get through lesson one, because I need to do the exercises over and over. Your lesson was great, and I haven’t even gotten to the end of it. I’m taking my time and just practicing the exercises at the very beginning to get them right. Then I will continue. And I’ve taught myself to play the fiddle using only 3 fingers, which makes me very happy! But I’m now going to put my energy into learning how to play the harp. I’m so glad I found you! Thanks!

      Hi ! I'm 78 and very little experience in playing an instrument. I want to play the lever harp and I am looking closely at the "Pixie". How do you like yours? This is a great place to learn!

    • @MarilynLetchworth
      @MarilynLetchworth 3 года назад

      @@handleycrafts8714 It has a great sound, and my husband (a musician) really likes it; however, truth be told, I have never had the time to learn how to play it. I’ve been practicing my 3-fingered fiddle, and I also make jewelry; and afterwards I’m too tired to do much else. But I like my Pixie, and someday I will play it.

      @lindafitak Год назад

      @@onlineacademyofirishmusic Hi, and thank you so much for your reply! I went to my local Guitar Center, and they don’t even carry harps in the store... online sales only. I’ve been thinking of buying a Roosebeck Minstrel harp with full Chelby levers on Amazon. I know Roosebeck does not have a great reputation among harpists, but the Chelby levers that they have added seem to work much better than the levers used to work years ago. Also, the one I’m looking at is made of Walnut, which might have more resonance and is probably sturdier than Rosewood. Currently, it’s being sold for $688, so 29 strings with full Chelby levers seems to be a good deal for a beginner harp. This particular harp has had many five star reviews on the page, for quality of sound and sturdiness. I want to be able to play in many keys and modes, and most beginner harps only offer possibilities for key of C Major and A Minor.

    I'm a beginner. When buying a harp how many strings should it have? What is the most comfortable floor harp height to work with? What would you regard is the best price range for quality? Can you recommend a London based supplier? Thanks.

      I'd recommend renting a harp for starting off, there are many places in England that offer this service. Choosing a harp is a personal desicion so I'd recommend trying out a few different types to see which feels best.

    Hello there! I'm wondering how playing the harp would go for somebody who has hypermobility? I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and am interested in learning an instrument that compliments...the harp being one that I'm looking into.
    I have issues with hypermobility in my fingers, hands, wrists...not to the point that I dislocate, but I don't want to get to that point. I already use figure-8 splints and ring splints part time- I would wear them more if I didn't have so much trouble with swelling and them falling off or getting stuck on.
    Anyway, would you advise somebody with my condition to go for a harp?

    It’s cool how you can set the key signature but what happens if you have an incidental note? Do you have to just flip the appropriate lever and then flip it back again as you play?

    When you say it is tuned from B flat to B flat does the mean c, d, e,f , g are tuned to flat as well ? I have been trying to figure that part out. Please can you or someone else help a girl out

    • @MarianneLinHarp
      @MarianneLinHarp 4 года назад +3

      She means that when all levers are down, the harp is in the key of Bb. C- D-Eb-F-G-A-Bb. Therefore to set yourself in the key of C you need B and E levers up. Hope this helps!

      @@ceciliaandrade7405 yes I'm sure... dont understand your comment.
      That's how you tune to B flat. A fully levered harp is more commonly tuned to E flat. C-D-D#/Eb-F-G-G#/Ab-A#/Bb so to set in C major you need E-A-B levers up

    Hey Lisa, do you think that irish music and classical music could be played in the same harp? I am interested in buying a harp and starting my lessons, but I really dont know if i shoud go for the classical harps or the celtic/irish harps... could i play both styles with either harps? Im reallly interested in both! Thank you!

      Hi Herbert, the 2 types of harp are different. Celtic use levers and classical uses pedals. My understanding is that you need a classical harp to play the full classical repertoire.

    Hi Lisa,
    Brilliant video. I particularly like the easy to follow methods and I feel like I will be able to play the harp better due to this video. I've ordered one and it is being delivered hopefully next week. I do have 2 questions:
    1) I am interested in tuning my harp to 432hz Verdi's A. Do you know how to do that or is it possible to do this on an electronic tuner?
    2) I saw on the oaim.ie you do online tuition from €16 a month (spectacular offer by the way). How many times a week are you available to teach? Or do you offer tuition online? I'm not sure how it works. Although I do have the free account at the moment. I will pay for the main account when my harp arrives.
    Thanks for your time,
    Cormac near Trim in Co. Meath (though from the North lol)

      Hi Cormac, Delighted to hear you're getting a harp! Glad you liked the lesson as well. Yes you tune the harp to 432hz using an electronic tuner (can I ask why you wish to do this?). 2, The lessons are all video lessons and you receive 24/7 unlimited access to all the lessons and features on the OAIM website.

      @@onlineacademyofirishmusic ok that's great. Thank you for the information.
      I want to set it to 432hz because it is the sound of harmonious music. I can send a link showing what the vibrational difference with iron filings with 432hz is like compared to 440hz, as standard music was changed to in the 1800s

    • @onlineacademyofirishmusic
      @onlineacademyofirishmusic  5 лет назад

      Agreed - the thing about playing Irish music is playing with others - We all play at 440hz so you'll have to re-tune your harp for a session.

    Hi ! I know this video came out more than two years but...here's a question:
    I'm a classical musician, and I have played the pedal harp for about ten years, but now I also want to go deeper into traditional celtic music. And the fact is that I will have to travel a lot in the future, so I'd like to buy a 22 strings harp to go anywhere with it...but I don't really know where to search ! I found the Fullsicle Rees harp, which seems to be a good balance between what I want and how much it costs (unfortunately I can't pay too much...), but I don't know anyone who tried this kind of harp, and there aren't many reviews about it (the ones that I found only talk about how convenient 22 strings harps are for beginners...which I am not). Have you got any advice for me ?
    Hope you'll see that comment, and thank you for sharing your passion !
