    Question: I come to harp after years of playing bass. I'm curious about the shifting. For example, I figured out the first part of "chimes" by myself, but I fingered the bit after the scale as 1-3-1-3-2-4-2-4- rather than 1-3 1-3 then shifting to get 1-3 again. In bass, we shift as infrequently as possible. That doesn't seem to be the case with the harp. I'm guessing there's a reason for this - can you enlighten me?

    Hi I’m a beginner and there’s this one song that I would love to learn but I can’t find any harp arrangement for it so I bought the solo piano arrangement for it. Is it possible to play the harp using a piano sheet? The whole piece is just on a key of E flat. Thanks!

    • @onlineacademyofirishmusic
      @onlineacademyofirishmusic  6 лет назад

      Hi Geanne, If you're a beginner you can work on that piece later. For now I'd suggest following Lisa's Harp basics course on OAIM - oaim.ie/course/52/harp_basics The first 5 lessons are free.

      If you can find an “Easy” piano sheet music arrangement, those usually work pretty well on the harp. When they arrange for beginner piano students they simplify the notes and take out any unnecessary accidentals. If you want to use a complicated piano arrangement as a beginner I suggest playing the melody in the right hand and playing a drone in the left hand. For a drone, if they give you the chord symbols, just play a single note that is the name of the chord. So if the chord is C, play the note C in the bass with your left hand. Then play the single note for each chord as they are listed at the top of the staff. If there are no chord names printed above the staff, just play the first left hand note of each measure and don’t play the rest of the bass/left hand for that measure. A drone sounds better if you follow the chord symbols, but if you don’t have them, the first note of each measure works.
      For your piece specifically, unless your harp is tuned to E flat, you will have to retune your harp or transpose the sheet music to another key. I buy my sheet music from MusicNotes because they often have transpositions already available, especially for the easy piano pieces. My harp is tuned in C and I have levers that don’t work though, so it’s necessary for me.

      Hi Elisabeth, Apologies that Lisa does not say it in the video, it never crossed our mind at the time. We have credited Janet in our description "Chimes is written by Janet Harbison, Irish harper, composer, teacher and director of the Irish Harp Orchestra".
