Vandross was a HUGE fan of Karen Carpenter's voice and recorded his version as a homage and himself, along with the writers of the song, stated that no one could touch the carpenter's version....

I always thought it was a Leon Russell song, did not know about the other writers. Could not be two more different musicians and singers than Karen and Leon, but what a gem of a haunting song by Leon and what a stunning vocal by Karen.

There is a YT channel out there by someone called Wings of Pegasus. He dives deep into the analysis of vocals and vocalists, and he did one feature on Karen Carpenter proving that her pitch in a live performance was even more true than the studio version, which is crazy! Loved your reaction, you are very good at what you do!! Thank you,

I saw that video. It was an excellent demonstration of "one take Karen" in action. It showed an instrument I had never seen before, a "scope" with time on the X axis and frequency on the Y axis. As an ET, I'm used to amplitude on the Y axis and frequency on the X axis like a spectrum analyzer. It's an example of an instrument created specifically created for the music industry. I imagine this measurement is used by autotune to "fix" singers who can't sing on key naturally.

Yes it is tragic when anybody dies so needlessly like that but it was particularly devastating when Karen passed so young because she impacted so many lives, including mine, with her sad sweet and sublime voice. Luther's version was beautiful and oh so moving, truly one of the great covers, and really songs, ever, but this song, to me, will always belong to Karen.

Superstar, originally titled Groupie, was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett. The lead vocal on the track you're reacting to here, which became a hit single, was the first time KC ever sang this song. Not just the first take of the session: the first time she sang it, reading handwritten lyrics. That's how good she was. (She was a kickass drummer, too, but that's another story.) Other Carpenters stuff? Goodbye To Love, Eve, Someday, Crescent Noon, I Need To Be In Love, If I Had You, The Uninvited Guest, Solitaire, End Of The World, Nowhere Man...there are too many to name. Oh, and you've got to watch the 1971 live outdoor Bacharach medley taped at Walter Reed army hospital for the Ed Sullivan Show. Karen singing up a storm while simultaneously drumming up a storm too...
Another Carpenter song (this one actually one of Richard's own) to listen to: Something In Your Eyes, lead vocal by the late, great Dusty Springfield, from Richard's 1987 solo album Time. (Richard sings lead lots on that project. Check out also When Time Was All We Had from Time, where he multitracks himself into an a cappella choir.)
Like Luther Vandross? So do I. Check out Dance With My Father; it'll wreck you. And if you like Luther, there'll be several others you'll like too: James Ingram, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Teddy Pendergrass, Matthew Ward (classic 1983 duet with Donna Summer, Love Has A Mind Of Its Own), and going way back, Nat Cole...also Tony Williams of The Platters.
    Nice reaction...

Check out Carpenters " This Masquerade ", also written by Mr. Russell. This song is a great example of Karen's deep contralto octave range and highlights Richards talents on the keys, composing and arrangements. One of my top Carpenters tunes, if not my favorite.

Dear Lonestar50, Thank you for that reply further confirming what I have known since I was in my 16th year.....this young lady and her voice was singularly amazing and of a tone and purity the likes of which the world may never see again. I say it often, it is as if God sent us Karen so we could truly understand what his angelic choir sounds like. He called her back after only a brief while because his choir needed her more than we did in t bis realm. This is what I like to think, and it makes my soul, spirit and faith stronger for feeling it this way. Good tidings and happy new year, Chuck in North Carolina

As one of the other reviewers said, "I love the Luther Vandross version, and thought he did it first. But after hearing the original version, and Karen's voice, I liked her version more," as the reviewer is crying her eyes out before the end of the first verse.
You did a Great analysis, too. Awesome!
FYI. When Bonnie Bramlett found out that the Carpenter's had changed a few words in the song, from "And I can't wait to sleep with you again," to "And I can hardly wait to be with you again," Bonnie got very upset and was threatening to sue, according to Bonnie herself, to keep the song from being released. However, Bonnie's own friends kept telling her, "Look, it's Karen Carpenter who is going to sing YOUR SONG. That is an honor, and you'll make money from Karen singing it.
The Lyrics were changed because NO ONE could/would ever think of Karen singing that verse from the original. That was not her image.
Check out Karen singing in their shortest recording. It's also the one that gets me teary-eyed.

Great to see someone cite I Can Dream Can't I. 1938 ballad standard by Sammy Fain, orchestrated for Carpenters by 50s bandleader Billy May. It is one of the great tragedies of popular music that there was never a Carpenters standards album. (I like to imagine that Linda Ronstadt heard Karen do this one and got the idea to coax Nelson Riddle out of retirement to arrange her three stunning standards CDs...)

Richard Carpenter was a master at making music suited just for his sister Karen’s velvet vocals, he always wanted her voice to be backed by the Carpenter’s siqniture style of beautiful instrumental melodies with beautiful background choir like vocals . There was nobody else like The Carpenters and their style were inspired and copied by many.

Wonderful reaction and learning experience. Richard did a few lead vocals including “Drucilla Penny.” Superstar after Richard made the change in the lyrics is usually the version that is covered and arranged further. The Groupie version has “Sleep with me” the Richard versions (including Luther) has “Be with me” a softer tone.
The song has been covered for decades including last year by an up and coming vocalist named Tori Holub. The version she sang was arranged for her directly and I think it’s the bomb. I’ve been following her and she can do no wrong, IMHO. If you want to go outside the box, maybe react to her version? I’ll keyword to it as links generally fail for me. Happy New Year and keep exploring and learning about the music and how perceptions can change.

3 artists who you didn’t want to see get a hold of your song if you’re the original artist….Luther, Aretha and the Isley Bros…they absolutely torched so many covers! As to Luther in particular, some of his more infamous covers include IF ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT, CREEPIN’, LOVE WON’T LET ME WAIT, IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE, A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME, SINCE I LOST MY BABY…not to mention that the opening to his version of SUPERSTAR is a brief cover of UNTIL YOU COME BACK TO ME (THAT’S WHAT I’M GONNA DO).

Try some Carol King tunes. We've only just begun, It's too late, good tunes. Karen's voice was unique. Carol 's was pretty good. It's human nature, we like whatever was the original to us, the first thing we try, food, music, you name it, it's why we miss where we grew up, even if we had a crappy childhood, there is still something about those first memories we had interacting with the world. We will remember the good memories.

Have to disagree with you.Firstly Richard Carpenter's arrangement is the Definitive version.everyone even Luther Vandross uses it. Luther record it the year Karen died. On the Billboard top 100 chart. Carpenters #2 Luther Vandross #84

Maybe 4th or 5th. Delaney & Bonnie (original), Rita Coolidge, Bette Midler, and maybe Cher. Then Carpenters. Still that is what became the definitive version. Close to You they did 4th. Definitive version, again.

Actually the song was written by Leon Russell & Bonnie Bramlett (of the duo Delaney & Bonnie). First recorded by Delaney and Bonnie in 1969 and originally titled Groupie (Superstar). The Carpenters released their cover of it in 1971. Luther Vandross did his version in 1983..Delaney & Bonnie released a second version in 1972.

Do you think if this was reversed ie you heard the carpenters version first, had listened to it over the years growing up and just found out Luther had done a cover you might say the carpenters was your fav version?
Bette (pronunced bet)midler is a singer, comedian and actress one of her best known films is beaches.try wind beneath my wings from that or the rose from the film if the same name where she plays a famous singer on a downward spiral.

I like your comments . The only thing I don’t like is when you choose one version over another. Most reviewers do that. When I hear different versions of the same song I like to note the highs and lows of each one. To me, it takes away the uniqueness of each artist to say you like one version of one more than another. That’s just me though.

Everyone is allowed their own taste to music n who they may like better Singing a song..This makes me think of Elvis ,that Black's were always against him for singing black music n just doing it better..So if this man likes Luther's better than Karen's that should be respected...

Not sure if you can call this a cover since I think it was released just before the version by the songwriter and his band. Groupie (Superstar) was written by Delaney Bramlett, Leon Russell and Rita Coolidge. Delaney and Bonnie released their version with a significantly different arrangement. Karen Carpenter sings beautifully on their version which changes a few words and the title of the song. The Carpenters arrangement is very clean and frankly, a bit too schmaltzy compared to Delaney and Bonnie's version. The song is about a Groupie who has a fling with a guitar player. She sadly and naively believes that it was more than a fling and he'll come back to her. It's a sad, sad song and this just gets lost in the Carpenters arrangement.

This song is about a groupie missing the object of their desire. Luther Vandross' version is more of a heartfelt love song. For me, I prefer the Carpenters' version because: nostalgia, probably. It's the version I grew up with.
