Was always told transfer cases in patrols needed ATF fluid to run effectively or otherwise they wore out real quick ... just brought myself an now building a GU patrol ute with A TD42Ti as a heart... makes 20Psi with the stock turbo an a boost tee inline ... with a 11mm boost comp pump fully rebuilt..
Here you go. Save all you fellas the time googling the differences. Silver top is easily identified by the vac pump on the alternator. These are the original forklift motor and are built strong. They will handle big boost and easily see 500,000ks. Around 93-95 they started phasing in the black top these were redesigned for automotive use. They lightened the piston crowns to help with higher rpms, they also use slightly different rockers and have larger cam followers. The vac pump on these is on the timing case. They also have 30mm gudgeons as opposed to the 28mm in the silver top which makes them easier to rebuild to turbo spec as the rods don't need changing. The turbo black top is the strongest of all. They have the 30mm gudgeons but have a stronger piston. They also have longer oil squirters which go into a gallery in the piston crown. They also have a larger oil pump. They have larger diameter front and rear main sections on the crank and a different hole pattern on the flywheel. In the head they have different precoms. They all have different cams Ti has a different cam gear, different tacho sensor and the timing case is different to suit the sensor. They’ve also got egr.
KBSR Films do you have any idea how much googling you saved? I’ve been trying to figure out if my GU is a factory turbo (I believe it is) but I can’t decode the VIN
KBSR Films it’s a 99 Y61, the build plate says “TD42” not “TD42T” but I heard that was something Nissan changed later. Engine number ends with T and everything looks real factory. Cast intake pipe across the engine to turbo, compensated pump
@@MrHowdi you'll be able to tell were you get your oil feed from and were your oil return goes. Factory turbo get it's oil feed from the block and oil return goes back into the block N/A will either get the feed off the back of the alternator or next to the engine mount and the oil return will go back into the sump
Awesome stuff. Correct me if I'm worg. But there was 3 makes of td42 from my research. The original silver top. Then a black top the one with lighter pistons exct. Then a revised black top in a factory turbo option with even thicker pistons and stronger internals then the original silver top even the NA revised black top was still stronger then the old silver top. So there was definitely a week stage for black tops. But soon as the factory turbo option come out this was the revised black top version.
Lads, I have a 99 GU with as far as I can tell a factory turbo TD42 but she’s a black top. I always thought the black tops were the turbo (engine number ends with “T”) and the silvers were the NA?
Theres two different kinds of blacktops, there are the N/A blacktops that came out in the late gq's that had weaker internals. The blacktops in the GU are factory turbo and have the strong internals. Silver tops came in early gq's and were all N/A. -Liam
Pretty sure they aren’t supposed to fill to the plugs like the Amaroks do, just did mine and put around 4L and I just stuck my pinky in the filler plug to see if I could touch it. Bit of a late reply haha, didn’t make it go to the plug
Hey just wonder what are some thing I should look for when buying my first gq td42 cheers love these videos keep up the great work
Thanks Lettuce! We have the perfect video coming out for you this Tuesday ! Covers all that!!

Yep agree I also use ATF dex 3 in my transfer. You can also put a bit in the gearbox if it has worn synchro’s will help with the grinding.
@@francisreichelt254 how much ATF do you put in the gearbox for worn synchros?
You guys are absolute legends, my mates and I can't get enought!
Awh cheers boys! ❤️

Nissan changed the oil recommendation in the transfer to ATF.
Well done guys love the vida
Thanks Benjamin!
Great video, just wondering how many litres you used all up, cheers
Cheers Liam! gearbox around 3.4L and transfer case was around 2.2L :)
Keep up the good work fellas, but do one better then the 6bt and if ya had the money just duramax it 🤠

very good
To bad if the fillers are seized
Is it best to drop the gearbox oil n transfer case oil once it’s warm or better to do it cold?
With this whole 12mm pump thing, you can have pumps built for different power levels, not all 12mm pump are built for 300hp out the door...
How much oil you use??
I’ve got a na silvertop
Why no thread tape on the diff and gearbox plugs.
Hey bro I’m changing the transfer case oil they rekon 2.2l but I only could fit 1.5 l in before it started over flowing . Uno anythin bout that?
Where can I get those bolts that you loosened?
Where's the merch?
😂😂
O ya boys
Why only 33 is it due to the gear ratio or not needed
Because its James's daily makes more sense to be 33s, however he is considering going to 35s !
Factory turbo blacktop and slivertop there all the same nothings different.
But good vids keep em up 🤙
Think you’ll find there are many differences between them mate! Turbo Blacktops are a much stronger engine👍
Yewww
🤙🤙
Do I fill the gearbox up to the filler hole or is there a specific amount I’m supposed to put in it
Pretty sure they aren’t supposed to fill to the plugs like the Amaroks do, just did mine and put around 4L and I just stuck my pinky in the filler plug to see if I could touch it. Bit of a late reply haha, didn’t make it go to the plug
How about this boys send the bottom end off for some turbo spec rods pistons blah blah then whack the head back on and 12mm? 😛
HAHAHAHAH
Mint vid mate DM me on insta if ur interested on the flogged td42 GQ
$650 worth of oils, coolant and filters. No biggie!
From memory the na black top and silver top have a 28mm gudgeon pins and the factory turbo has a 30mm
Also any one wanna address that oil leak hahah
James calls it a "controlled rust protection modification" 😂😂
Haha
Na blacktops that came out in the early Gu have the 30mm gudgeon pins too!
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ n/a trubo diesel
