@user-sm9fm3vl7h Thanks, Jim! I absolutely love it. Great to meet you today. Kx
Harold my Grand par served in 1914-1918 first world war, hence the revolver and bullets..Aww a brave great man, with a solid gold pocket watch, gard and chain..
A stand up wash for my Grandma and Par..
magic !!!!love the music
Visual poetry. Thank you for taking me away from chaotic reality for a bit.
Thank you, it's our pleasure. Kx
Visual poetry was the expression I was going to post too. Medicinal watching.
My Grand Par had a loaded revolver under his bed loaded. He threatened the lodger with it..😂 the lodger was a policeman 😂
Let's get them to 100k subs. Make sure you share these videos...everyone needs their Scottish Isle fix. Maybe they just don't know it yet.
And remember to watch the adverts! That makes a big difference.
Indee Scotish Isle Fix.... Got it. God bless you all out there. From remote Scotish island.
@@janetmackinnon3411 The only ones I refuse to watch are the VERY long ones. There is an advert on the menopause which lasts a full hour!
Hello from the south of the South Island New Zealand. Every time I watch you two going about your daily life on the island ,I am reminded of such similar activities over the years in my life..I too had a Granny who carried rolls of notes in her handbag. I must say that The Scottish Isle is perfect in every way.Such exquisite scenery, perfectly atmospheric harp music ,and your banter has me chuckling. I really appreciate all your hard work Scott and Katie ,thankyou.
So funny your grandmother did the same! Maybe we should all start doing that again... 😂
Wise not trusting banks.
Also from the south of the south island of New Zealand. Love following your journey. I have visited Scotland 6 times, and just love it. Love all the shots of stone walls. I am also an admirer of them. I take lots of photos of them when I am over there. Hope to return next year. Have been to Fort William, Skye, Lewis, and last year went to Orkney.
Everyone back then had an old zinc bath. Ours used to hang out in the garden. Once a week it would be brought into the house and filled from the ‘copper.’
Really enjoyed this video guys. I'm definitely with you on the brown wood, wouldn't have anything else. Scott you tell a great story and your great grandmother reminded me of my gran who kept all her money at home and wouldn't spend a penny of it!! You are truly living a unique lifestyle on your magical isle .. and yes it is absolutely magical and a pleasure to follow your adventures. So, thanks so much Katie and Scott for sharing.
Thanks, Louise! 🤗
That was one of your best episodes yet, the shot with your cat following you was priceless. The woods are amazing, the old pollarded oak and the lichen are just magical. Thank you.
Thank you, Philip. We enjoyed watching this one back, too. Kx
Love the tree katie climbed the shape is so cool😊
As a kid growing up in a old Georgian terraced house in London, we used to have to bring in a large tin bath in front of the kitchen fire once a week for a bath. The youngest would have a bath first then each child one after another by age, the hot water was topped up in between children then the parents had their bath. We had two large wooden clothes horses draped with blankets for privicy. Then it had to be emptied with buckets into the garden and finally hung up outside the back door until the following week. Everyone did the same back then so it wasn't a problem. 💕🇦🇺
We've come across many of the wooden clothes horses you mention in our time! What a lovely picture you paint, thank you for sharing this memory. Kx
Ah. Just made me smile. Kinda thing I would do. 😊
Love the old stories about your family. Historical family heritage fascinates me. Sounds like your Great Grandmother was a typical Victorian. Children should be seen and not heard. My Grandfather worked the coal mines near Cumbuslang as a child. .. 9years of age. The story goes that he worked in the mine from 6 am until around mid afternoon and then had two hours of schooling. Such a sad childhood.
What did your grandfather do later in life?
That’s what I call the salt of the earth,my father went into the shale mines at 14 year old,he had to shovel 16tons a day otherwise no wages,I was extremely proud of him
@@annedoyle222 Yes, they were amazing men who worked the mines. Women too. Another story about my Grandfather. He had booked storage on the Titanic along with his cousin to immigrate to Alberta Canada to work in the coal mines. His cousin took ill and Grampa sold his tickets . He never really got over the loss of his two friends that went down with the Titanic. He set sail 4 months later leaving his wife to follow a few months later while being 6 months pregnant with my dad. He always said he had a guardian Angel looking after him because he also had a day off work when the most historic and horrific coal mine disasters in Canadian history happened in Hillcrest Alberta. He was in the rescue party. No survivors. I am sure your Grandfather had many stories to tell too. Brave men!!
Scott thank you for sharing😊
I appreciated your story about your great grandmother, and hope that it is written down with the genealogy!
Your island is magical. I can see why you would want to explore every inch of it.
I love the Lord of the Rings references. A friend and I owned an old log cabin in the mountains and we'd spend our time doing endless chores, quoting Monty Python, and referencing LOTRs. And a bit of whiskey drinking as well.
Sounds like you had fun! I'm glad we can bring back these carefree memories to you. Hope the cabin went to a good owner if it's no longer yours. Kx
I'm curious, how do you guys get electricity? Do you have solar or did someone run a line from the mainland?
The lichen can be used as a dye if you want orange as a colour. I remember my Mum boiling it up & us kids having to endure wearing orange cloths for 1 summer.
That's hilarious 😂 Maybe one for the sheep's wool after shearing! Kx
Beautiful music too.
In the north people use birchbark as a firestarting agent up to this day, you can harvest the loose outer layer without harming the tree whatsoever.
And it regenerates later on.
Might feel better than using fangorn moss😉
Those trees are extraordinarily beautiful. Just breathe taking. Yes, I wish I could give you advice about the stone work but I cannot. Stripping back dozens of layers of paint on old wooden fireplace surrounds, is my forte lol. Sending big cuddles to the wool and fur babies xx Teresa ❤🇦🇺
Hello from Richmond Virginia USA! Love watching you explore your new island.its very interesting the history. Please be safe and have a merry Christmas
Thanks for sharing about your great grandmother. So many folks don’t know anything about their history.
I’m from Liverpool originally we lived in a terraced house no bathroom just an outside toilet. We had the old tin bath hanging on the wall on a nail in the back yard.Mum would boil kettles and pans of water on the old gas stove,When everybody was bathed she would tip the water into the yard .
I loved the stories of the old folk. Life must have been hard for them.
That is a magical birch forest. The moss looks like rime frost! And Robin is the most beautiful tree yet on your lovely island. What a gorgeous place to live! I hope you do pull the old tub down to the cottage and use it for something. It's not a bad idea to elevate it on rocks, have a fire of some sort under it, and have warm baths outside at night. Your own hot tub!
Ooooo out with a handbag and a bookcase. That’s a different combination. Makes me smile.
Have a Blessed Day
Another fantastic video thank you for taking us along. That forest did look magical indeed.
I think the paint and stains on the stones lend character to the wall.
That bath for an outdoor bath area 🎉🎉
I like seeing the cat following you...
Me too! Kx
Another lovely video-thank you! I always enjoy your family stories. ❤
I think an electric wire brush would be more effective …. The best would be to use a sandblaster. Would adore an outdoor bath🤗❣️My mother used a galvanized huge tub filled with soapy water and by the time it was her turn the water was pretty grey😳❗️
try equal parts of baking soda, vinegar, and water brush it on and leave it several hours. It will get the soot off.
Always excited to see progress 😊 love you both 🤗❤️
I agree with the Robin Hood.
Likewise, had no indoor bathroom - we had tin bath and heated up water on stove on range over the coal fire for hot water for bath.
You had to really want (/need?!) a bath back then! Kx
Magical
If only that gorgeous old tree could talk. The stories it could tell of by gone days. Love your scenery pics.
Magical and wonderful family history. Thank-you. 😊
😮Slept through the alarm.
Thank goodness for replay.
Just had to say hiw much I am enjoying your videos. The photography is beautiful, the content so interesting and the whole experience is so calming. A very big thank you.
Thank you! 😊
What a beautiful and magical tree the fairy appeared in... Your cat got acting ambitions, btw. Really amazing how she just knew she was in the middle of the shot.
Until I was 7 we lived in a house with no barhroom ( I'm now 77 ) we had a tin bath which was brought in and filled in front of the fire and as I was the youngest I would be the last in ! My Grandfather born in 1881 and died in 1966 never knew the luxury of indoor plumbing 😊
Thanks guys, great watch as always.Love your attitude to life.Cheers from NZ
My husband and I love so much watching your videos from America! Please keep them going!!
Thank you for the encouragement, Elaine. We're happy to hear you enjoy them. Kx
Usnea..good medicinal plant as well.
Love the tub
I liked the Fangorn Forest reference. Certainly looked otherworldly...and that large moss-covered oak...magical!
caustic soda is great at removing old paint i used it to strip my window ledges & Bannister rail mix it with water ^ use a piece of wire wool but do wear gloves as it can burn your hands.... it also removes varnish ingrained into the wood too....wall looks lovely .😊😊😊😊 .
I lived in Iowa and I recall bathing in a copper boiler, and you didnt get fresh water. You took your turn depending on where you was in line.
Loved the story … made me smile a lot , family life then and can relate so much, love your channel and your realness , amazing land people ❤that you are, respect !! 🐏🐑🐈⬛🦌🦌🪵
I would live it on, it gives a patina to the stone!
The fireplace stone--I'd say to 'Leave it.' Less trouble. And for washing, people could've used washtubs/or big sinks for the babies.
.
Old Man's Beard is also used to make Usnea, an herb that is very anti-infective-
Lovely episode and enjoyed the memories of great great grandma!
Our old stone cottage had been painted externally with layers of coloured paint of indeterminate origin and topped with a layer of textured sandtex paint , we had to have it sandblasted as it was peeling in many places. A messy business…..
Love the lichen forest.. never seen anything like that before! :)
Nor had we. It's amazing. Kx
You've quickly become one of my favourite YT channels.
Thank you both, I always leave with knowledge and a smile.
🙏 Pat/ Yukon, Canada
Those bookcases are dead gorgeous and I envy you having them😁🥰....but since you actually made them and have a dire need to get the boxes of books off the floors, I am content. Having the cases against the outer walls will make it much easier on the floor of your cabin.
Old man's beard also makes an amazing immunity tincture. I cram as much as possible into a mason jar, then cover with 100 proof vodka. Let set for 6-8weeks in the dark...strain and take a 5ml dropper twice a day. I started in January 2020, and have only gotten a single stomach virus since. Not even the nasty nineteen. Don't only use it for tinder...
And the more old man's beard you have in the area, the healthier your air is, as OMB hates pollution.
I will 100% do this. Thank you so much for the instruction. I love taking medicine from the environment. Have a dwindling bag of meadowsweet I have to replenish next summer, but also frequently use garlic and dried fennel, thyme, rosemary. I wonder if OMB is better harvested at certain times of year? Right now, it's getting all the sun since the leaves died back... Kx
@@TheScottishIsle as long as it is still greenish grey and on the tree, I have found it to be effective... also, if you have rosehips that you can cut and add for vitamin c, that is an extra bonus. Blackberries, when in season also add vitamin c and zinc.
And sage tea is fabulous for sore throats.
Scott, you probably were bathed in a zinc bath, filled with water heated in the copper, which was an item everyone had to boil/wash the laundry. I grew up in a cottage with an outdoor loo, and no bathroom, and thats how we bathed, once a week in front of the range fire.
We used a round wash tub or long tub, what they now call animal feeders or waterers.
I love the bookcases. I would enjoy the task of opening up the boxes of books and shelving them. I am jealous of the old bathtub. That would be perfect in the front of my house will flowers in it. And the treebeard. I would have just thought moss, but the Scottish are so theatrical in their wording of so many things. Does it damage the birch trees? I agree that the forest looks so magical. I missed the live premier, but this was every bit as enjoyable.
It doesn't damage the trees to my knowledge. One other viewer told us it's a sign of pure air quality. Beautiful stuff. Thank you for watching. Kx
I just love the music
Sand blasting is very quick but messy
Scott what was the most beautiful part of that Robin Hood tree? She has quite a sence of humor as well do you. I really enjoy your interactions they kind of remind me of my husband and I.😁
Another channel had the same problem with smoke stain and they used baking soda and water paste, brushed it in, let it stay on for 24 hrs., then rinsed with vinegar/water solution. It worked.
Loving this Channel, such a Beautiful place with Amazing views. A wee tip for the fireplace stones, best to use a powerful drill with a wirebrush attachment on it, it will make a mess but all that paint has penetrated the stone deep into the pores so will be nearly impossible to get rid of and you could maybe do with re pointing inbetween the stones.
Back in the 90’s I was one of the official Robin Hood characters in Sherwood Forest visitor’s centre. Every weekend would find me annoying visitors in the forest.
😂
Scott had one wild great grandmother! Love the Robin tree and the cat checking up on your walking progress!
We had an enamel bath about 3ft long that mom put it in front of the coal fire, filled it full of hot water. I sat in it watching Bonanza on the TV every Friday night before bed with a hot water bottle, happy days. PS the tele was black and white it was the 50’s
That sounds perfect. How innocent and homely. ❤️ Kx
Should try one day using some acorns of all of the oak trees on you island as a food source, used to be a staple in some areas a long time ago.
With all the fast flowing streams in autumn/winter you have the ideal environment to let all the tannins leach out of them, which makes them fit for eating🙂
Please note there’s been a phone tripod added to the Amazon Wishlist if anyone wants to purchase it for Katie & Scott, I’m sure they’d love one, save them holding the phone all the time. Great Christmas present. 🙏😊
😘
Outdoor bath is called a Bush Bath. Need to place a wooden tray in the bottom of the bath so you dont get burn't.
Yes they are brillient, we have one set up in bush patch near our home. West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. It's a thing here in rural areas. Just have to put up with sandflys at times 😊😊😊
Oh no! MIDGIES!! 🤦♀️
You are the most content people you make us all feel the same watching you. .I love the bookcases
sand blasting for the stone work Katy xx
Merveilleuse harpe jouée ici.
As a child in the 1950s our cottage did not have a bathroom we had a tin bath which hung outside and brought in usually on a Friday night and put in front of the fire and filled with water us children got in first and I guess parents got in after we went to bed, we also had outside toilet😊😊
Thank you for sharing this beautiful memory. ❤️ Kx
Greetings from Romania! 🐎👍🐎
👋🏻 🫂
I don’t know if your delivery issues have been resolved. Here in the hills of Appalachia we used an old chest freezer put down by the road for your post to be put in. The magnetic seal of the door kept the water out. It’s the West Virginia(USA) mailbox.
A very peaceful video. Scott, I liked the stories about your great grandma. I met 2 of my great grandmothers as a small child, They were both Victorian as well. I barely remember them. They were both wee Scottish ladies, one from the Orkneys and one from Skye. I wish now that I'd have talked to them more, but back then children were to be seen and not heard.
The Orkney accent is my favourite! It's such a beautiful, melodic way of speaking. Lewis is not too dissimilar. Kx
Hi Katy, instead of paint stripper try to color match with the rest of the stone ,mix your paints until you get a color match get creative with it 😉 when thats done and you seal it it will look great 👍 i was taught how to restore antiques years ago and we had many tricks up our sleeve . I restored a buffet for 'Oprah Winfrey' using car bondo and color matching!
All my Grandparents were Victorians. The old terraces with outside toilets, worst if you lived in an upstairs Tyneside flat, had tin baths just big enough to sit in. They would be hung on the back yard wall then plonked in front of the kitchen fire (range) to be handy for the hot water. Usually once a week unless Dad had a mucky job. Filled and emptied by hand, of course. All the family using the same water according to a strict heirarchy.
Those were the days
Some of us Canadians 🇨🇦 don’t have much snow yet either.. so nothing is really iced over! 🙂
I'd heard that you guys are late for snow this year. I used to live in AB! Kx
@@TheScottishIsleI live in Alberta 🙂.. originally from the province of Ontario . We just got a dusting of snow here a few days ago unfortunately it stayed ! Apparently we’re getting snow in the next few days.. but the temperatures here have been absolutely perfect.. very rare to have such low temperatures and not so much snow at this time of year! But I’m loving it.. no ice fishing yet as the ice hasn’t really formed on the lakes! ❤️🙂 I love the music in the beginning of your videos.. it’s calming! 🙂
Supposedly El Nino is keeping it warmer...but here in South Kenai Peninsula Alaska its snowing and the bay is freezing over... like normal for this time of year. So who knows?
I was brought up i Scotland and we had no bathroom, only inside tiolet. Baths were in a tin bath with warm water poured in and it was put near open fire. Only once a week though.
The Old Man’s Beard is also medicinal as well. I don’t remember what it was used for though.
Hello nice book shelves. I found a copy of your grannies cook book the Edinburgh book of plain cookery recipes
I bought it but it's coming from America
Hope you like it! Bizzare you can't get one from the UK...
Lovely, thanks.
The wall tells a story, leave it looks great
Those shelves look like the way an old doorway was covered up in my house
Absolutely love your stories 😊
Love the family history, thank you for sharing
Do you know you have access to a literal "garden" of usnea (beard lichen) , one of the best known natural antibiotics!!! I'm sooo envious!
Some other viewers have been letting us know of its medicinal properties, too. I had no idea it is such a useful lichen! I will definitely be collecting some. Thank you for watching! Kx
@@TheScottishIsle when you do, take care to collect small amounts from each "spot" so as not to remove all in any given area...you want it to continue year after year...God bless! Love your channel!!
Re: The Cabin. Is it feasible for one to replace the stilts and thereafter the base of the cabin into something more permanent structure. There are some good Maine & Canadian cabin renovation videos which do just that with great success, and surprisingly work from the base up. I'm assuming it is a rock type foundation upon which you are building. It could be doable and not too complicated either.
Those videos sound right up our street. Bit like Barnwood Builders! Thank you. Kx
As soon as I saw the book cases I was imagining the book cases as pantry shelves( maybe to store preserves as well ) but book cases are great too. 😊.
Better get the boy-o making some pantry shelves, eh? 😉
if that stripper your using is as you say acidic it will damage the lime mortar holding the stones together. great project keep up the good work
❤️❤️❤️
Katie I was wondering or my wife was wondering where you get you wrap around shawls from 😊
My mum made that one for me, actually. Here's the pattern, if you fancy a go: www.handylittleme.com/outlander-shawl-crochet-pattern/ Kx
