    Just had a test ride on this model this morning around inner-city Sydney. It was awesome. For a bike around town, to commute to work, for weekend getaways, etc this bike is astoundingly good. I used to own a Tuono-RR (2017) and the s1000r is a better bike. There I said it. I didn't think I would but this bike delivered in every way. Very easy to ride in traffic. Very responsive & HEAPS of giddy-up when you open up the throttle.

      Man, I just wanted to write something similar... It's an instant classic. Can I borrow that? Btw, you pulled a very subtle remark after 9:35 in that regard, Scott (Warner): "With this you feel under control!" - also perfect. Even though some of you might have problems hearing the "with".

    Thanks for that. I own a ‘17R, and I was expecting you to say it was dated. I have ridden the V4S and while it is more exciting and has more performance, I jumped on my 35,000+km bike riding home from the Ducati dealer (the sound of the V4S with full termi nearly had me trading on the spot...) and I thought “this is still a very good bike” and “this is more refined”. Another great vid 👍🏽👍🏽😁

    Thanks for revisiting this "forgotten supernaked"!
    I do love my '19 S1000R, like you said it does low speed and high speed very well! I'm happy enough with the dash, although I would have liked to have had separate wheelie control. I have found the suspension in DDC Road mode a little soft on a couple of occasions and I even had the bike give me a steering wobble once in a bend when I wasn't even going very fast!
    The two things I dislike the most about the bike is the very limited steering lock and the criminally poor headlights. I've replaced both halogen bulbs with LEDs which has improved things at night but the whole headlight unit should be updated with a modern LED/projector setup for both high and low beam.

    As an owner of a s1000r for 6 years I appreciate this vid. I'm always thinking about changing, but haven't done simply because anything else would be a marginal improvement at best. And while the s1000r's been criticised for lack of character, to me that simply means it has few vices. Only regret - not ticking the cruise control option back in 2013 when I iut down a deposit! Didn't seem worthwhile back tthen - a few long distance trips makes me now think otherwise. When I do sell, it'll be for a very different type of bike.

Despite the Swiss price start from 16900.- I belive I cant get any better bike than this, and I think no need to wait for the newest S1000R which will arrive next year. Im amazed nobody is talking about the atrocious handlebar vibrations on this bike. I just bought a 2018 S1000r a few weeks back and put a few thousand kilometers on it. Will be getting rid of it very soon because of the horrible vibrations on it after 5500 RPM. No, heavy bar-ends do not fix it, only improves it slightly.

    • @mylife5237
      @mylife5237 4 года назад

      The handlebar vibration was an issue before 2017 version. Mine is 2018, vibration is there but acceptable. I checked with many bike dealers who said all litre bikes are more or less the same because of the power output. They told me if I thought changing to another bike without handlebar vibration would solve the problem, I would probably be wasting money. Sarcastically, they said I should try a cruise then. LMAO.
      That said, try riding without gloves and then with gloves that aren't too tight, you'll notice or probably be shocked the handlebar vibration issue may not be so pronounced after all.

    Just bought the `17 model (updated version and coming from a `11 Speed Triple) and so far I am loving this bike. Some will say it has no character because it is too perfect? Well, with that said that is all the character I need :-) Also this Beemer is biblical fast and I think these 165 ponies is the end station for the naked road bike class. It seems BMW is very conservative on the hp rating and the wheel horse power is almost there with the crank horse power stated. It is faster then the `21 Triump Speed which is 180 hp advertised. Why didn`t BMW go up in hporse power with the new `21 S1000R? Well, I guess they had NothingToProve 😃

    I love my 2018 S1000R Sport. With the addition of a small touring screen and Akro race headers to match the slip-on it is a fast and relatively comfortable ride. I never tire taking this (now) sub 200kg, 160bhp at the rear wheel wheel bike for a blast.

    I'm not a fan of inline four engines, but I would be willing to overlook that if BMW would update the dash and the front mask to a different style, because this bike pretty much has everything you would need in a do-it-all bike, which is exactly what I would like. I'm really surprised that no other bike manufacturer puts heated grips and especially shifter as standard to their 20k priced bikes.

    Had mine two years, love it. Personally I don't notice a lot of difference between road and dynamic modes but I keep it in dynamic because the exhaust just sounds so good! There is a big jump up to Dynamic Pro, which I only use on track, really ups the throttle response and obviously reduces ABS / anti wheelie.
    I do look at other bikes but still don't see anything better. If you only have space for one bike it's perfect, commuting, traffic, track, b road blasts, not a lot it can't do, it's riding perfection.

    Why didn’t BMW at least upgrade to the TFT on this? Ordinary. I added a taller screen & 20mm bar risers to my 2015 R. Made a HUGE difference to comfort. I “downgraded”🤭 from the first S1000RR! 😈As u said Scott, this is a track weapon! I did a track day on Phillip Island & ate RR’s through the tight turns. Of course they had too much power down the straights, but I was laughing my head off through the turns!🤣 For me, I could also ride this harder through the hills than the RR. It just fits me! It does bode well that BMW didn’t mess too much engine wise. It is a great versatile, torque meister! I agree with your sentiments being the ALMOST perfect sports naked👍🏼 Great review again Scott. Stay safe mate😷

  • @Scootir185

    Really great review. Thanks for your awesome content!
    For me I think that in today’s marketplace this bike is too dated. With the new design of the RR I suspect buyers expect the R to also shed it’s asymmetric ugliness and get in line with the nice TFT’s in their lineup. It’s fast, but with the V4 and other monsters hitting the street they need to bump the engine to be considered a contender. And having had one as a long term loaner for a bit I felt all it’s perfection translated to a total lack of character. I was never excited to ride it. It seems like they’re having “reached perfection” is marketing BS to cover for just phoning it in on this bike at the moment. But hey - I’m just some moron on the interwebs - what do I know.

    Nice Video, good test! By the way: i own a 2018 S 1000 R and i permanent ride the Dynamic mode - without any problems.
    Over 20° C sometimes the Dynamic Pro mode - also without any problems. It's because i like it from time to time, to drive the bike pure
    without all the e-helpers. And it works, because he motor is very smooth and easy to operate only with the "right hand".

    I guess we'll have to wait another year for an update which surely must include BMW's TFT screen. I test rode a very low mileage 2018 bike. I thought I liked the dated dash set up with the analogue rev counter, I do, but the digital info is so difficult to read while on the move. I found it easy to misread stuff and a little confusing, but the rest of the bike was fabulous. Maybe I would get used to the dash in time, maybe, but maybe not. I might wait for an update if that is going to be next year or save a few thousand in cash buying a low mileage used one.

    Except for a TFT screen (which is a cosmetic detail) the S1R still is a superb machine & amongst the best of supernakeds. I'm slightly bias as I have a 2017 model. Same spec as this 2020. The Aprilia Tuono is an amazing bike, but lacks the Beemers ease of maintenance & overall reliabilty. Yes, I've owned 2 Aprilias. the last being a V4 1000 Tuono. Amazing to ride, but broke down too much, so switched to BMW ;)

Great bike, great fun and outstandig performance. Despite all that, ordered an R1250R though, because I use the bike since 20 yrs for leisure but as a daily commuter all the time, after watching yr test and a drive find the latter far better for everyday use and far more versatile! Hi Scott...Thanks again for another really helpful and sensible review. Loving the way you break these down into Powertrain, Chassis, City Manners, etc. I'm about to grab myself a new machine and this has been on the shortlist for a few months, along with the F900r, and even though I know they will update this soon...it just seems like such an amazing package and maybe even a bit of a do it all. It just keeps calling me back. I've heard a lot of guys saying it has issues with the front end being light and prone to wobbles....is something you noticed?

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  4 года назад

      Thank you,
      Ah, no I didn't notice that at all. I've ridden the 2018 and now this the 2020 model now and neither one had that. But this is at very high "track day" speeds, under hard acceleration and not all bikes have it which leads me to believe it has something more to do with tire type/brand than with the bike. The 1000XR has it a little too under the same conditions. But there are several conditions that can cause this issue. Is it something to worry about? No, not at all.
      I know a few Amateure racers that prefer to use this bike on track days, even one guy is a professional track day instructor working for the German govt. doing this and this is his bike of choice and his track times are right there with the pros using this bike. Of all the super nakeds, this is the number one choice for a track day weapon (well right there with the Tuono).
      Ride safe,
      Scott

    Would have liked to have seen you talk about the wind blast with no bug screen vs the Tuono. It was between these two for me, but I chose the Tuono as I do very little city riding and the Tuono had better wind protection according to the reviews I have seen(not to mention a few grand cheaper). Also service costs are less and seems a little more fun to ride. Liked your Tuono rr review as well. Keep up the good reviews- it does really help when choosing a bike!

So is it comfortable and why do you think is is not seen as a sport bike? Once you reviewed the R 1250 R would you take this bike over that one. Great review. Love your channel...and wish I was living back in Krickenbach, GE. There’s a brand-new red 2019 S1000R for sale at my local Florida BMW (6 miles on the Odo) with the Akra exhaust for just $12,999...and yet I really want to wait for the update. TFT, new motor, and for me, a new front end symmetrical design aesthetic. The current model may be a great bike, but it needs those updates to remain competitive, IMHO. (Especially in these trying times.)

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 4 года назад

      I would personally jump on that deal.
      The bike is beautiful (you never see the front headlights when you are riding) and still very competitive.
      I never buy a first year model because we all know there are issues that had to be worked out before the "new" model is really ready. After all the recalls and everything is worked out, it usually takes a year or two especially if they make changes to the engine.

    I think the new SuperDuke needs a closer look compared to the S1000R. Much improved suspension and frame geometry.

    Tried them both..
    Still cant really decide, if someone had them both it would be perfect to share his experience and some advices...

    G’day Scott.
    Great review and also watched and enjoyed your recent review on the 2021 bike. In Australia, you can get a 2020 model ‘HP’ spec bike for around AUD$22k where as the 2021 Sport is a scratch over AUD$27k. Meanwhile, the M Sport version with forged wheels (not Carbon), Package is AUD$34k… I would be keen to hear your thoughts on this compared to the new one and if you think you can you justify the the extra cost of the new one? Appreciate your thoughts if you have time mate. Cheers.

      Hi, na, get the 2020, the 2021 is better but not that much better. The 2021 may shave off a half of a second on your track times but is it worth that much? Yea, no.
      take care,
      Scott

    Hello Scott, great review, great channel!
    one question: S1000R datasheet says regarding the braking system "Teil-Integral, abschaltbar" which means (I think) some sort of front rear combined braking system where the "combination function" can be switched off (true?). How does it work? if you use front brake it also activates the rear brake automatically, correct? but if you use only rear brake it does NOT activate front brake, does it? So what do you think in general about theses combined braking systems? Do they somehow change the way you ride (brake) - no more rear braking needed at all? Do you use that if the system is installed or do you rather switch it off, if possible.
    Never been riding such a system, as an average naked bike rider (z900rs at the moment) I wonder if a new bike should have it or not...
    Thank you! Greetings from Austria, Christopher

      Linked braking has been around for a while now, I had it on my Honda CBR1100XX back in 2002 so it's nothing new. And yes it's a good thing. You don't even know it that it's doing it and no you don't need to use the foot brake because the hand brake does both. But I'm old school and still do both but when I just want the rear I just use the rear...especially when trail braking. But you have to be careful when doing it trail braking. You can turn off the rear ABS but I don't think you can turn off the linked part.
      Anyone else know???

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  4 года назад

      Sorry no video, yet. The mount, well that is home made at least nothing you can buy as a set. I just pieced together the stuff I had and purchased some stuff I thought would work and trial and error...still working on it...still not happy with it but it works for now. No one makes a mount for the Ogio backpack to mount a selfie-stick to.
      The 360 camera is a Gopro Max on the end of a selfie-stick and the stick is mounted to the Ogio Mach5 back-pack.
      Ride safe,
      Scott

Bike is comfortable and just does everything extremely well. I’ll also do 3-4 track days a year and it more than holds its own against race-prepped track bikes.

In my opinion that is ... it doesn't work really ...it wasn't designed as a naked ..just like the Tuono ...Fabulous bike ...Looks wrong...its what happens when a company takes a Sports bike and just reclothes it .... it doesn't work for me ....Mind you ..Ducati have done the same I think..??? but somehow they've managed to get it right ...The V4 is beautiful looking !!!...maybe some shapes just don't translate as good as others ..???

    • @LeeXRV
      @LeeXRV 4 года назад

      Paul Smith I assume you’re from the U.K. with the mention of mod2? Insurance may also be a factor depending on your age. My first bike after mod2 was a GSXR-600 which is easy as it’s fairly slow below 8k revs and it’s very light. I’d suggest a bike with around 100bhp or less is a good idea whilst you gain experience. The S1000R (my current bike) for example is a beast and too much even if insurance isn’t a problem. Other than that track tuition and advanced road training is worth more than anything else.
