I met one of my best friends in the open world of Ultima Online. He was my neighbor in the game. Turns out years later of friendship he helped to get a new job to change my career and now 4 years later I moved to Germany from Brazil to lead a team. And my mom used to say playing Ultima Online wouldn't take me anywhere.. Totally legendary game.
Over 20 years later and this still makes me just as happy as it did when I was a kid. I wouldn't trade those days for anything. What an amazing experience and time it was.

This song makes me so sad and angry at the same time. The last gasp of an era, before the dark times, before EA and the like destroyed so much of the golden age of gaming. The mystery, the magic of gaming back then... lost... and this lingering song it's epitaph. Before tea bagging and microtransactions. Before FPS gluts. Back in a day when brilliant people made the game they wanted, not the game marketing research department. When the limitations fueled imagination. When quality game play mattered most. Good bye Bullfrog, Westwood, Origin, and the greats in their prime Sid Meier and team, Peter Molyneux and Will Wright. Carmack and Romero and of course Lord British himself. Too many greats to list. Xeen and Ultima, the gold box games, and age past it seems. Yet the corporate machine change some of them, crushed others, and those who simply walked away from what it was becoming. Someday I'll be laid to rest and at my wake I hope this song will play, a gamer's final lullaby.
Not to mention, the other great IPs Origin alone had that 'went down with the ship'. Crusader: No Remorse was a great game in it's own right, then you've got Wing Commander...
Well said man. We were lucky enough to witness the golden age of gaming in its prime. I would add Looking Glass Studios to the legendary list. How I miss the 90s, take care friends.
I have listened to this so many times, and it still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck more often than not. Sometimes, when life is too much, or things are simply moving too fast, I just sit and play this video. That's when I come back to happiness, and I see the circle of stones in my back yard. The blue gate shimmering amongst the trees. Thank you for your beautiful rendition of my all-time favorite song.
This got me in my feels.. im 36 years old.. I skipped school just to play UO... Those days will forever be imbedded in my memories and always looked back as a milestone in my life.. first monster slain.. running away because i didnt know what healing was... first skill to GM.. first house ever bought.. then came EA....😪😰😭
2020 and I have to listen to this again. UO has such a special place in my memory. Things you know will never come back, but you can remember them so clearly, like if they happened yesterday. Good times. No... Great times!
My brother and dad were playing Ultima III, which was, I think, the first computer game I attempted to play as a kid. These were the DOS based games made before video games had these fancy “tutorials” you see today. We had to actually read the instruction booklet, or better yet, just figure it out as we played. 😜 “Back in my day” old man rant over.
My childhood distilled into one song. Ultima IV on the NES was the first game I ever played; I couldn't have been more than 3-4 years old, at the time. Everybody else was talking about saving Peach or Zelda, or playing games I'd never get to even see on the SNES. To say I had a difficult life would be an understatement. I genuinely stopped taking joy in most things after I started middle school, but gaming was one of the few things left I liked and chief among them was the Ultima series. It was one of the few things on which my dysfunctional family agreed; even my mom appreciated it, despite not being into games, herself. I learned more about how to be a good person from those games than I did almost any other source aside from my parents. No matter how worn down I got by everything, no matter how badly bullied I got or how little the useless school administrators cared, I could always find some measure of peace in this series. Even today, as a 30 year-old married man, just hearing this song can drive away the dark thoughts that plague me to this day. Maybe, one day, I can meet Lord British in person and thank him for helping to bring my family together.
Iolo taught me this song way back in the early 80s before Ultima became A Thing, and it's been part of my repertoire since. This is a lovely version. (The strings sound kind of synthy-y.)
Stones is one of the first videogame's theme I've fell in love with. It's so perfect that it made me love Ultima even more. Thanks to Iolo and @ChequerChequer
I can remember sitting in brit and just letting the music play... warm fuzzy feelings... Also is sad because ill never be able to go back to exactly how it felt..
Thank you for this....It brings back great memories of my youth. I remember playing Ultima Online with my best friend, Mike. We would play for hours. In fact, my family had to get a second phone line in order for me to play(which i paid for). The world was so original. Everywhere was an adventure, you truly had no idea what you might encounter. Here's to simpler times.....Cheers.
It's not an ultima Online track! It's an Ultima Saga track. All you guys get to enjoy is a compressed MP3 that was composed something like 15 years before UO flourishes in this crazed mind obsessed with dooming its creation before Elizabeth and Abraham put their dirty claws on it. But this song? It has a history that goes back eons before you were born. It's about... It's about Zog, feeling oneness for the first time, solitude. The melancoly that is reaching at your heart while you are listening to this. Now, a little key secret detail no one ever managed to understand, all dumbed down by the Mmo that ever was: Zog IS the Avatar, and time and space most definitely ARE a function of firepower. And that song is the windmill in your mind. That's exactly what you're feeling right know, without being able to transcribe said feelings into pronoucable words. That is also why it leaves you speechless. So that you may remain silent while the Wisps finally get to speak plainly. Britannia is a symphony composed by wisps and interpreted by a quatuor of most excellent and dashing musicians, not by thousands of adventurer wannabes who can't even bother reading a dialogue option that contains more than three words! And yes, Iolo is one of them musicians, obviously. """"""Ultima Online"""""" Yeah.
three words sir, OUT F**KING STANDING!!! claps.. I first heard this tune many many moons ago, and now to hear it so well played, brings warmth to this old heart :)
The pleasure of pressing the same buttons for years without getting bored was different, the purpose was the same, but the pleasure was different, as beautiful and temporary as dreams, just like life. Even though they are shelved like old parchments, their crumbs are everywhere. To ancient and beautiful days. greetings.
This is the best version of "Stones" I have ever heard, thank you. I play it on loop when playing "Legends of Aria" on the 5040 server. (Thanks Stimwalt for the link)
You just threw me back 10 years ago man. Such nostalgia and good times that I had playing on UO and I probably owe this game some friends that I have today if not the majority simply by knowing those friends through friends that I knew from Ultima Online. Again, thank you for this awesome nostalgia! It brought me some tears. ^^''
This brings back so many emotions and memories. I started playing this game on my brother's account when I was 13? 14? He paid me a small bit of money to farm resources for him. I enjoyed it so much when I finally got old enough I made my own account. I started gaming here and no other MMO will compare. This game was my gateway into D&D and dungeon mastering.
My first, maybe last, comment in youtube for the sake of almost 12-13 years of my life. You are awesome bro. You took me back to that years. There is no game else is like UO
Amazing cover of the Stones theme, brought back so many memories playing UO and think back to all the friends I made that I still wish I could have stayed in contact with.
Wow this brings me back. I remember when the game first came out and times when i would just leave the login screen up to listen to this song over and over. Beautiful cover!
Started playing Ultima Online last week, and though I'm a bit late I'm enjoying it a lot. Immediately loved the log-in screen music, didn't know it belonged to another Ultima game. Wholesome, beautiful cover, it goes deep
When I feel well, and I hear this again, it brings back very pleasant feelings of love. Something I haven't experienced in a long time and hope to feel again in my lifetime.
Ultima V was the very first game my brother and i played so many good memories i was 7 and he was 4 and as we grew up we played all of them to completion together some of my favorite memeories were staying up all night on summer vac and taking turns playing ultima 7 thank you for this!

Wow, you write really well. This expresses what I feel as well.
EA already had their tentacles around Origin at this point. There is a grave in U5 that reads "Origin: We Created Worlds."

Reading through the comments makes my heart full. Such an incredible game. It united so many people. Nothing else came close.
The most and important game I ever played....
Nostalgia kicks in and it's super Effective, right?
Amen
More games need to teach positive things like the eight virtues.
Ultima 4 Wuest of the Avstar was my first Ultima I played and I was hooked after that.
Agreed
懐かしい記憶の中にある音楽をありがとう。オンラインの世界に初めて踏み入れ、世界観に感動し幾年も、UOの世界で過ごしました。思い出の音楽に感謝いたします。
The memories this game holds for us can never be beaten. Amazing game, amazing memories, amazing music. I wish it would come back again. xxxx
ahhh... me too man.... To relieve those times, I am considering making an ep, only guitar and ocarina of the main songs of this game
I barely graduated from high school because of this game and I never regret.

Long before Skyrim and songs such as the Dragon born. This was true RPG game music. Plus all the music by Ken Arnold for Ultima 3 through 5.
