As a music producer I knew that I wanted a compressor and a sidechain (I mean, I use it in eeevery single song for that pumping effect when the kick hits) but I struggled to find how to set it up. This tutorial was very helpful thank you!
Cheers mate, happy with the results. I did actually have to go into the bus settings by double clicking on the bus send on the speech channel strip and set it to "on", I also set the "send level" to 100 as it was set to 0 by default, I don't know if this was necessary but before doing this I wasn't getting any side chain compression, and afterwards I was. I then just set my compressor settings right, mostly the ADSR settings so that the music wasn't going quiet and loud again so suddenly and jarringly, and now it's smooth and sounding great! Essentially it works just like on Logic Pro X which is what I'm used to, just with all the buttons in slightly different places, so it helped to have someone just show me where to go!
PLEASE UPDATE THIS VIDEO!!! This does not work until you go to the dynamics of the voice audio and clicking “send”. You also have to toggle "Dynamics" on both channels; it's the little red switch in the top left of the Dynamics panel. After doing both of These instructions it worked for me! April 2024.
hello, if i have 2 tracks, one of my motorcycle sound with exhaust wind and suroundings and an other of my self talking does it works even if it's not silent ? ( because some sound will be in my voice microphone because of the wind)
Is it possible to add and adjust audio keyframes for a whole audio track so you can bring up and down the volume for multiple clips (you can in Premiere which is something I used often). Thanks
@@JasonRobertsVideo When clicking the 3 dots above the mixer, even though "bus sends" was checked, it wasn't displaying. Easy fix - just uncheck one of the others. D'oh! I guess I'm hitting a limitation of my 1080P monitor.... Thanks so much for the vid - super helpful (I'm on Resolve free version)
@@JasonRobertsVideoI double checked everything and it didn’t work for me. After experimenting around, going into the dynamics of the voice audio and clicking “send”worked instead of sending bus to sidechain.
Spent WAY too much time troubleshooting and even went to another video, when I could have looked at the comments and seen that I needed to "send" the dialogue track. PLEASE REMOVE THIS VIDEO AND RESHOOT WITH THE CORRECT STEPS! Thanks for getting the ball rolling though.
The more audio effects etc. you add the slower the rendering can be though I didn't find it too bad with this. When I use voice isolate, noise reduction, etc then it does slow things down a bit more.
Thanks, do you know if Resolve has a way to edit audio separately in an audio editing app? I miss that feature in the old Sony Vegas, where I could open and edit audio clips in editors such as Sound forge, Izotope, Audcity and etc.
Hi Jason, thanks so much for providing detail on audio control with DaVinci Resolve. I am wondering if my videos are too quiet. I have the audio set to -25dB and I am not sure if this is too quiet. Though, I am just recording ambient noise typically.
@@JasonRobertsVideo Yeah I would love a video like that. I am wondering the best approach when levelling the sound for my virtual walking videos. Many of them are naturally pretty quiet and I want the sound to be a bit more noticeable. What would you recommend?
@@JasonRobertsVideo in fact, if there isn't one, I would suggest from basics (101, crash course, basic tutorial...), cause Fairlight seems to be even more difficut than Fusion to learn. Just landed here, will search...thanks for the video, congrats on the channel!
Yeah Fairlight can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you don't have and experience/background in audio engineering. Sounds like me doing a video would be very useful! :)
There's a lot to unpack in that question - I think I need to make a video to explain it all because "volume" and "loudness" are not quite the same thing - I'll try and get a video out next week to help :)
now obviously the weakness of the sidechain is there is no lookahead. automation will always be superior, but more time consuming. be sure to have a slow enough release so that the music doesn't pump for every short silence
@@JasonRobertsVideo Amazing, thank you. I got there last night after lots of trial and error but your video is very helpful and confirms I (eventually) did it the right way.
Very confusing. Got sidetracked by the discussion of the compressor because you did not say upfront it is needed. Would have benefited grately by a quick list of steps followed by the watching of you doing them. I’ll watch this again. Hopefully, will be able to see the magic “send” item, but on iPad, hard to see fine details that you don’t zoom in on.
